Hope-Calvin, Wooster-Wittenberg, and Amherst-Williams are all playing this weekend during ESPN Rivalry Week.

Interesting Coincidence...

Yet none will even get a mention...

I think one of Calvin or Hope's ADs should  contact ESPN to try to get College Gameday to come to one of the Calvin-Hope games in the future.  I do not think it's that far-fetched considering the football version of College Gameday seems to go to "smaller" school type games once or twice a season.

The College Gameday football crew went to Williams-Amherst a few years ago.

For me I don't even need college game day. One of these espnu games would be just fine. Hope and Calvin has to be as intriguing as green bay at Wright state!

Ohhhhh, now you've done it!   ;) ;) ;D 8-)

Happy Rivalry Day!  Gonna be the first Hope away game this entire season that the weather has any impact on getting there - not that it's all that bad today.  Good thing it's a short drive - everybody be safe.  Should be a great game in a great atmosphere.  Go HOPE!

Anyone know if the Hope/Calvin game is soldout? Still hoping my schedule might allow me to go!

Here's a link to the Calvin-Hope preview story in today's "virtual" Grand Rapids Press and mlive.com:
http://www.mlive.com/smallcolleges/grandrapids/index.ssf/2012/02/hope-calvin_rivalry_game_one_c.html

It notes that Calvin coach Kevin Vande Streek has worked for both of the soon-to-retire Calvin and Hope presidents, Gaylen Byker and James Bultman.

It also tallies the athletic accomplishments of each school during the Byker and Bultman years.

Although the story does not say so, there is no doubt which of the two administrations has more than a rooting interest in intercollegiate athletics.  Over the past decade and a half, Hope has far outpaced Calvin in paying attention to the athletic programs, and investing institutional time, treasure and prestige in sports.

With the impending retirements, and the summertime arrival at Calvin of new President Michael Le Roy, one wonders whether this gap might be addressed.

Topics like this have caused quite a stir here in the past.  I'm sure someone is going to mention the cost of the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex.

55 million pieces of treasure or there abouts, positively neglectful.  ;)

There is that, to be sure.  And it was a substantial piece of the $150 million or thereabouts Capital Campaign.  No argument there.  Where I find the neglectfulness is in the Calvin administration's tepid attitude toward athletics, vis a vis Hope -- and now Adrian, and perhaps other league schools.  The Calvin athletic program does remarkably well, in spite of Byker's inattention.  I'm lobbying for the new president to demonstrate that Calvin's asserted commitment to excellence in all spheres extends to the arena, as well.

This game appears to be Sold Out. I am not surprised but also surprised at the same time.... Hope fans, if you have an extra ticket to sell, please let me know!

One of the keys I thought to the first Hope/Calvin game was Hope's turning around the rebounding totals in mid game.

Now a large part of this was Calvin not shooting 65% the final 20 minutes of the game, kind of hard to rebound well when there are so few to get.  Around halftime it was 17-10 in favor of Calvin, Hope turned that around slightly in the second half 23-13, again mostly because Calvin missed so many more shots, but I think it demonstrated Hope was at least holding their own vs the seemingly taller Knights.

The biggest key, was certainly Calvin's hot first half shooting when they scorched the nets for 64%.  Easily the best anyone has done vs a Hope team this year.  The Dutchmen would be wise to remember they can play defense so I'll be paying attention to the defensive intensity Hope plays with in the first 10 minutes or so.  It needs to be better than it was the last couple games.

I expect Calvin to have moments where their crowd gives them a lift, it will be key for Hope to weather these moments and stay within reach or not let a small run become a big run.  I don't think either team will want to fall behind by double-digits and try to claw back into this one, that's playing a game you won't win very often and its happened a little too much in this series lately.

All understood but you've got to see how this sounds to the other schools in this league not named Hope.  :)

I think last year it just sold out the morning of also.

You can try to sneak in as a Calvin student.  Put a nice camera around you and say you're with Chimes to take pictures and they may let you in.  It worked a few years ago with one my buddies.
