Why did the MIAA go to fewer teams making the conference tournament?  What was their rationale?  I'm not sure if we ever had a team come out of the tournament with a losing record and said team get the automatic qualifier.

I believe it was for financial reasons. Less travel costs.

I think Alma is playing like the 3rd best team in the conference

You should give Adrian and Trine a little more credit for how well they've been playing recently too.

This year is the fourth time Hope/Calvin will meet in the semi-finals.  The second as the 1 and 4 seeds.  In 1993 Calvin beat Hope 77-69.  The other two times were as the 2/3 seeds at the now famous Kresge Gymnasium Hope/Calvin games in 2003 and 2005.  Hope won in 2003, Calvin in 2005.

They have met 12 times overall in the tournament with Hope winning 9, Calvin 3.  Hope has won the last 4 meetings, all in the Championship game.

Hope has won both of this years games:
Hope won at Hope 81-65  http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/1112/0118calv.htm
Hope won at Calvin 83-70  http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/1112/0211cahp.htm

Trine and Adrian have met only once in the MIAA tournament.  In 2008 Adrian defeated Trine 75-68.   Adrian leads the all-time series 12-7.

The two teams split this years games:
Adrian winning at Trine 53-42   http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/1112/0111trad.htm
Trine winning at Adrian 52-50  http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/1112/0204trad.htm

The MIAA decided last year to change the basketball tournament format to the 4 team configuration to make bball tourneys the same format as used by other MIAA sports.
This decision was made by the various college presidents.
If you don't like it you may want to address your concerns to the various presidents.
Historically the first round games were very poorly attended, and I am sure lost money for the MIAA.  If you really want an 8 team tournament you might want to step up as the "tournament sponsor", but even the $$$$ might not sway the presidents.

It is pretty obvious that the men's coaches don't like the new tourney format.  They did get the tie-breaker formula modified, and provision for a play-in game inserted, but no one is really sure how that was supposed to work.

I doubt there is a real desire to have an eight team tournament, with fans, coaches or schools.  There was rarely a shocker team that went from a seven seed to winning the tournament.  With that said, I think Alma could have shocked a few teams this year had they made the tournament.  Thanks for the update.

Nice stats, Sac.  I'll add Calvin has made the MIAA finals every year since 2004.   They'll have their backs against the wall on Wednesday, though.  Calvin is going to have to shoot much better than they did the last time they played Hope, and they're going to have to play 40 minutes of solid basketball.  Easier said than done, though, when you're playing the number 1 team in the country.

EDIT:  I just noticed the championship game is at 3pm on Saturday instead of the usual 7:30 pm from past years.  Interesting.  Guessing that's to make sure it doesn't conflict with the women's MIAA tournament final if it were to be held at the same location.

That is correct; and in theory, should the tournament remain the same for next year, the men's and women's schedules will flip-flop, with the men playing on Thursday and then Saturday night.

Next year it will be more important not to have the championship times conflict.  Although with such a large facility, it would be interesting to do a double-header and not clear the arena between games.  ;)

The last few years I have enjoyed making the 45 minute drive in between games on Saturday to catch a double dose of the rivalry. I guess I will only be able to catch one this year. ;)
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

First reaction - No problem, we are used to having to deal with large crowds at the DeVos

oh, wait - that's probably not what you meant

Second reaction - no need to empty your place out between - cause you "still can't fill it" - clap, clap, clap clap clap

On a serious note, does any Hope fan have an update on Bowser and his overseas adventures?  I haven't heard much at all, especially since he came home due to foot issues.  Did he have surgery?  Did he go back?

I know that Durham from Grace left the team, and country for that matter, for Finland.  Heard their was an issue or two about paying the "foreign" players.  Did Will get the proverbial "screw over" too?

Is there any concern that Hope has "limped" to the finish of the regular season.  Probably their two weakest performances in a while, if not all season, back to back?  Yes, it's often more difficult beating a team the second time around but....this is the #1 team in the land we're talking about.  Regardless, its nothing a little home cooking over the next couple weeks can't cure.  HOPE PLAYS, HOPE WINS!!!!

Hope maintains with 23 of 25 first place votes. Voters still not sold on NCC, which seems odd to me, given the injury problems they had earlier in the year.

I think they were flat and not sufficiently engaged. I am expect a couple (that's right - 2) of big performances from them this week.
