HopeConvert and Civic Minded:

Thanks for the reply, gentlemen.  I know that the official sellout capacity at DeVos is 3675, so if the "official" attendence was 3471 as you mention, it wasn't a sellout, unlike the semi-final game was on Wednesday night.  Actually, it appears the attendance listing for the title game has now been corrected on the Hope box score section, so it was obviously a typo as you mention.  Realistically, however, do you not think that even when there have been sellouts at DeVos, that the actual attendance is perhaps even more than the official capacity due to standing room? (Unless, Hope does not let in more people than that official capacity number).  I bring this up because while TR (whom I've known for many years) and his staff at our alma mater do an excellent job in the statistics aspect of its athletic programs including attendance, still sometimes no one can always get it totally right.  This past fall, our attendance at home football games was excellent and over the 3,000 mark for all the games with the exception of one game.  I personally believe that game had well more than was listed as the official attendance as I was there on the sidelines (and, yes, I count those things :D :)), so sometimes the official attendance count can be slightly off, albeit unintentional and certainly very rarely at Hope - we all know it can and does happen anywhere at other colleges who are not perhaps as diligent or meticulous as our alma mater's staff is.

Of course, perhaps it is much more controlled as to how many persons are physically allowed into the basketball arena i.e. only the total number of capacity tickets.  This is a little different and perhaps the entire issue non-comparable to NCAA football playoff games in that, for the latter, there is no limit, one reason being you are not going to have a sellout for one of those early round games (or for that matter, any if ever ::) ;D :)).  I'm speculating here since I've never attended the MIAA BB Tournament, yet have attended several NCAA football playoff games and the Stagg Bowl several times.  Anyway, thanks for your previous clarification posts.
formerd3db, fyi, when the DeVos opened, the college announced its capacity as 3200:

Now it says 3400, which perhaps adds the people on the level above the seats:

Seems perhaps someone should jump in and let the arrogant and smug Hope posters know that they won the MIAA tourney and are going to the big dance.  An awful lot of peeing in other's Cheerios going on for fans who get to go to the big dance, IMHO.   ;D ;D

Allow me to clarify a few points:

--I am a female (as are a few other posters here)
--My ipod is decidedly hot pink
--I am less catty than section7's walkman jab   ;D :D :)
--My attendance info, along with much posted here, is probably slightly incorrect
--The Vicksburg band has also played during a Hope game and they were fantastic
--In general I do not enjoy pep bands (I have very sensitive hearing, and I find them to be exactly what HopeConvert was talking about with the piped in music -- too loud to think, to talk with others, and/or to enjoy the game, but that's just my take due to my own circumstances)
--The buzzer is also way too loud, and I often wear earplugs because of it
--I welcome everyone's opinions and have never meant to imply anything counter to that
--To me you've lost your right to your opinion when it turns to bashing people (but again, clearly that seems to be just me)
--Being a homer for a home town radio station for the local college doesn't seem like a sin to me; YMMV
--I haven't missed "a game a week or so for 5 years," I've only missed 2 games in 5 years, just to be clear   ;) ;) ;)

Now back too your regularly scheduled posting...   ;D ;D ;D

That was just one poster that said that.

I think some posters were/are naturally upset when being told by a poster what they shouldn't be talking about on a message board designed to talk MIAA.  I don't think adults liked to be mothered in that regard.

You did see the emoticons, right?  Please ignore the comment.  Did not mean to drag anything up from the past.

And to clarify, it wasn't me who talked about what should or should not be talked about, it was a poster cas, the record will show that.

Dear Everyone,

My comment was poking fun at some Hope posters as of late, whom, having achieved what every MIAA team sets out to achieve in any given year, and whom, in my opinion, should just be feeling happy and grateful for a great season, now seem to be turning on each other and or everything related to Hope in a whine-fest of minimal proportion.  Truthfully, I was feeling guilty about this as I thought about how Calvin posters must be feeling about said comments, so I took a little jab, in jest, at Hope posters.  Not sure why this is upsetting, but then sensitivities seem to run hight around here all the time.  I should know better. :P :-[ :-X

I remember the loudspeaker music at the Civic Center as being painful to my ears.  I have not had that problem at DeVos, probably because of the larger space.

I too wish the spotlight introductions would ride off into the sunset.  When the opposing players are announced, I would prefer to be actually able to match a face with a name for later reference.

I enjoy the high school pep bands and Vicksburg's was incredible.  There was on occasion a Hope Pep band at DeVos in the early days.  The one conducted by a student was enjoyable.  However, there is more chance of the Cubs winning the 2012 World Series than of a music-faculty-lead pep band.  I remember Whitewater's great Alumni Band from the NCAA finals a few years ago, which, if run by a Hope alumnus/a with no faculty involvement would be an option which I would applaud.

Not to point out the obvious but seeing David Krombeen starting a fast break with 4 Calvin defenders behind him probably didn't end well for the Knights.

The young women on the right seems....excited!  Also their might be an offspring of a poster or two in this shot.  Cookie monster just wants more cookies.

pointlem:
Once again, thanks for the info and links.  Seems kind of strange as there have been a variety of "official" numbers for the capacity at DeVos for basketbal from several sources, including the College itself and all of them differing.  Without going back to check, I recall that when it was first "on the drawing boards", it was supposed to have about 4,000 total, however, that obviously changed.  Regardless, we know that anywhere from the 3400 level on is "capacity" (in my book, that mean's "standing room only") and that Hope packs 'em in there for basketball as evidenced by our leading the NCAA Div. III in average attendance per game in recent years.  It still is so much more as compared to the majority of the other colleges in DIII, which usually have no where near that.  Anyway, the bottom line is that it is an awesome sight and experience for the spectators in that type of atmosphere.

Interesting to read the various comments regarding the DeVos atmosphere and "decible" level from those of you who are regular attendees at the games.  This is obviously a "moment in time" and not reflective of any of that because I wasn't there, however, the short time that I listened to the broadcast of the game (which was the important part i.e. at the end of the game and the overtime), it seemed to me that it was awful quiet at times.  I thought that stange because watching some of the other college games on ESPN yesterday at home, the noise level was deafning and constant; although perhaps that was just one sound bite from ESPN and/or their "enhancement" techniques for the "TV effect". ::) ::) ;D ;).  Seriously, though, I'm sure it was that loud at the game yesterday and certainly on Wed night when Calvin was the opponent.  Anyway, that pretty much covers the attendance topic, so I'm out!

Congrats to one of our own--KnightSlappy--who made an appearance on Hoopsville tonight with Dave McHugh and Pat Coleman, discussing his bracketology. The show does get archived and you can pick up his segment starting at around the 1:16 mark. Congrats Matt!!

Tough pod indeed - but you've got to beat them all anyway.  Personally I don't see IWU getting in.  My preference would be to have more of a GL pod, but that typically doesn't seem to happen.  It's all speculation until noon anyway.

Right. Wisconsin/Illinois is out of region until it's convenient for the NCAA. Always cracks me up.

Wash U. is all the way on the other side of the bracket. Therefore this would make me happy. Can't see this happening though with the current bottom half of the section. Will have to see more GL or Midwest pods.

As for this pod, I will take it all day! I want to beat UWSP, after all the terrible heartbreaks that city has given me.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!
