3 -- Faculty Senate: "no"
Doesn't surprise me at all.  I've heard an overwhelming majority of faculty has been against the football idea from the start of the feasibility study.

I don't even think the faculty liked it when Calvin added lacross as a varsity sport.

Calvin had lacross as a club sport for some time.  Not sure it even had to be voted on by the faculty senate.  Calvin just agreed to go along with the rest of the MIAA in adding it as a varsity MIAA sport for men and women.

Big difference in cost between adding lacross as a varsity sport, and adding football.  I don't know that there was an organized group in opposition to adding football.  It appeared to me more a matter of many faculty just not being enthusiastic about adding football.
It sure didn't help matters much when GRCC disbanded their football program citing the costs involved.

GRCC's costs were related to travel, not just having a football program.  Being the only JC in the state of Michigan with football meant GRCC had to travel great distances just to find games and that situation was not going to get better in the near future.

GRCC outlined the reasons for shutting down the football program here...... http://www.grccraiders.com/news/2012/1/9/FB_0109120254.aspx

Cost of running the program was not one of them, only the cost of travel cited.

And there is something wrong with that? pss... stinger? Do you think they recruited him before he went to Central?

I'm sure that Hope did recruit NVA before he went to Central and of course there is nothing wrong with that.

I have learned that it is a violation of NCAA rules if anyone at Hope engaged in contact with him after he enrolled at Central, unless the athletic department at CMU gave permission.

But does anyone here really believe that GVW, MN, or anyone else would be foolish enough to violate a pretty black-and-white NCAA rule?  Especially when we're talking about D3--not big $$'s or coaching contracts at stake.  I'll choose to presume innocence for everyone involved on this issue unless there is a lot more smoke than just innuendo on this message board.

NWHF, you might want to rethink your statement "and there is something wrong with that?", since it could send the message that there is some funny business going on with a less-than-complete understanding of the rules.  I'm sure you didn't mean it that way but some could interpret it that way.   :)

I'm pretty confident that when NVA was making the decision, as to where to take his basketball career and education, it came down to CMU and Hope.

And I can guarantee you that there was no contact initiated by Hope after he was enrolled at CMU.  C'mon, people.   :-\ :o :P

Guys, I was just playing into the many years of rumors of Hope tampering. I believe it's been discussed on this board before.  I wasn't directly accusing Neil of tampering with NVA.  I'm sure NVA secured his release well before there was any contact with Hope about transferring.

Can we put some of this conversation to rest? As a Calvin person I can tell you this.  The faculty doesn't approve of anything unless it has to to with saving a tree, protecting gay rights, and academic "freedom".  By the way, the lacrosse deal didn't go smoothly either.  There is more to that story.

As a Calvin person, I'm not sure of all the banter about who recruited VanArendonk, GVW or MN.  Are we trying to find where to place the credit or the blame?

Seriously, folks, we're into the sweet 16 and elite 8 week.  Any predictions who will make to Salem?

Yeah... I wasn't looking at it in the context of the law, just the idea. A poorly executed response to an idiotic comment... My bad.

Newest recruiting buzz at Alma is that they have a couple guys who play AAU for Parallel 45...go to school in Bellaire and Gaylord. Still trying to find out names...

Question for Sac or KS (or any other stat guru)...what was the cumulative record of the teams Calvin beat this year? I don't think they beat many above .500 teams this season/have for the last few years and it was just brought to my attention by someone interested in the program. Thought it'd be something interesting to research.

Last year they beat Cornerstone, Ohio Wesleyan, DePauw, Olivet (.500), Albion x2, and Hope.

Big weekend in D3 as the final four is determined.  Interested in what others predict.  I'm seeing Middlebury, Amherst, Wooster & Whitworth making it to Salem.
