Peyton Manning to the Broncos. I'm surprised, I thought he was transferring to Hope.

He really wanted to be a Dutchmen, but... he used up all of his eligibility when playing for Univ. of Tennessee.   ;)  Looks like he's going to wear the correct colors though!!  :)

I thought it was because he was only one person.

Not only was he, but he still is!

I hadn't realized until last night that Hope's last 3 losses to D3 schools have been this...

Albion 76-78 OT
Augustana  80-88 OT
Illinois Wesleyan 101-108  2OT

36-3 vs D3 since the MIAA opening loss to Calvin last season.  Hope's had one double-digit loss to a D3 school since the Platteville game of 2009.
That's quite an achievement.  Not much to show for it though.

au contraire.  It just takes some time to figure out what font size is required to fit "39-straight-games-with-no-regulation-losses" onto a banner.

I think he's going to have a great career at MSU.  He is one big kid to deal with at the high school level.

Getting a little chippy in here...

Agreed, it's unfortunate.  One of the nice things about The Rivalry is that most fans on both sides are above reveling in the other side's failure.

Except in the head-to-head games, of course :)

I thought it was because he was only one person.

Not only was he, but he still is!

This just in from an unnamed source who requested anonymity:

"Details continue to surface about the finalists in the Peyton Manning free agent sweepstakes and events that unfolded in the final hours.  Unbeknownst to many, Calvin College had targeted Manning as the potential face of their potential football program.  Word is that Calvin was selling the expected delay in being able to actually reach a decision on football as an opportunity for Peyton to allow his neck to completely heal.  Hope College, however, was a significant player right to the end.  Despite a substantial last minute increase in the "Leadership Award" Scholarship Hope was offering, Denver ultimately prevailed...."

OK, sorry for that--I think it's the fact that I'm trapped in my office staring at an unbelievable March day  :'( .  Seriously, it's been years since I've heard even a whisper about non-scholarship "scholarships" in the MIAA (frankly, the last time was 3-4 years ago, and it was regarding a kid who ended up at Calvin).  Have MIAA schools been able to increase the amounts available for academic merit in recent years?  In talking with a number of families with kids in college now, I was amazed at how similar Hope and Calvin were in what they offered for academic achievement while the same grades/ACT scores were worth nearly double at Aquinas.  I suspect that increases have been minor at best, but I'd be interested in knowing what is happening at other MIAA schools in this arena and how it may be impacting their ability to attract student-athletes....
