Peyton Manning to the Broncos. I'm surprised, I thought he was transferring to Hope.

He really wanted to be a Dutchmen, but... he used up all of his eligibility when playing for Univ. of Tennessee.   ;)  Looks like he's going to wear the correct colors though!!  :)

I thought it was because he was only one person.

Not only was he, but he still is!

This just in from an unnamed source who requested anonymity:

"Details continue to surface about the finalists in the Peyton Manning free agent sweepstakes and events that unfolded in the final hours.  Unbeknownst to many, Calvin College had targeted Manning as the potential face of their potential football program.  Word is that Calvin was selling the expected delay in being able to actually reach a decision on football as an opportunity for Peyton to allow his neck to completely heal.  Hope College, however, was a significant player right to the end.  Despite a substantial last minute increase in the "Leadership Award" Scholarship Hope was offering, Denver ultimately prevailed...."

OK, sorry for that--I think it's the fact that I'm trapped in my office staring at an unbelievable March day  :'( .  Seriously, it's been years since I've heard even a whisper about non-scholarship "scholarships" in the MIAA (frankly, the last time was 3-4 years ago, and it was regarding a kid who ended up at Calvin).  Have MIAA schools been able to increase the amounts available for academic merit in recent years?  In talking with a number of families with kids in college now, I was amazed at how similar Hope and Calvin were in what they offered for academic achievement while the same grades/ACT scores were worth nearly double at Aquinas.  I suspect that increases have been minor at best, but I'd be interested in knowing what is happening at other MIAA schools in this arena and how it may be impacting their ability to attract student-athletes....

Calvin has an academic scholarship calculator:

http://www.calvin.edu/finaid/types/scholarships/calc.html

though as they say, it's a guideline, not a guarantee.

Just did a quick check, and it does appear that similar GPA/ACT would yield about double over at AQ (perhaps even a bit more). But then again, you'd have to go to AQ...

Not sure if anyone had pointed this out yet, but UWW became the first school in d3 (second in any division to Florida in 07-08) to win both football and basketball NCAA Championships in the same year...

Not that it diminishes the accomplishment but in regards to football, I know there are a few UW schools that have D2 track programs and D3 football and get a lot of football recruits by offering scholarships for track, is UWW one of these? Regardless, congrats on a MBB championship!

Can this really happen?  If it does, it seems like a loophole..

There are NO WIAC schools with D2 track. This is a blatant falsehood. In fact, this loophole was closed in the early 1990s because schools such as Dayton (not the WIAC) were abusing it.

UWW is also only the second D3 school to win Big Doorstops in both of the major sports in college athletics, football and men's basketball. Wittenberg is the other.

Right, as I understand it, athletic departments are allowed to "play up" in one or two (non-revenue) spots as long as they maintain the scholarship requirements of their "home" division. The only exceptions being a few schools with D1 hockey traditions that were grandfathered in.

So Calvin could decide to compete in Division I in women's volleyball, but they couldn't give out scholarships to those players without making the entire athletics program Division I.

What year did Wittenberg do this? I read it in the USA today yesterday. Maybe I can find it and double check myself but it state that uww was the second ever...

Gregory didn't say it was the same year. He said they were the only other one to ever do it.

Witt didn't do it in the same year.  But they are the only d3 school (other than UWW, obviously) to EVER win titles in both those sports.

No, you're confusing two different achievements, sflzman. I didn't say that Wittenberg won the football and men's basketball titles in the same year. I said that Wittenberg has won national championships in both sports. The Tigers won D3 football titles in 1973 and 1975, and hoops titles in 1961* and 1977.

It's no less remarkable an achievement for UWW, considering that there's only one other institution on this level that has garnered Walnut and Bronze in the two big sports.

*Wittenberg's first hoops title was in the old NCAA College Division, which split into D2 and D3 in the early Seventies.

With the topic of the different NCAA divisions, it'll be interesting to see if Davenport will be NCAA DII in the near future.  Word is that they are planning to re-apply as they hired a consultant who believes their chances are very high of getting in this time around.

If that happens, I think they will have football very soon. Calvin starting a football program at the same time as Davenport could be a difficult thing.

FYI - hockey isn't the only sports where D1/D3 grandfather clause is... Hartwick soccer, Hopkins lacrosse, I think there is a water polo program somewhere... and some others.

Also FYI - UWW is the only team in NCAA, all-divisions, history to win the NCAA titles in both football and basketball in the same academic season. Tennessee and Florida have done it, but the football titles are NOT NCAA titles - just national titles.
