Trine steals one out of Michigan and from the WHAC, 6-5 Jared Holmquist from Reed City. He plays for all the right reasons and will be a cornerstone of their program there.

Hardly a steal.  Pretty common knowledge for the past 3 or 4 months.  Good kid and will be fun to see him in the MIAA.  Probably regrets not looking harder at Alma now that Hargraves has shown what he can do.  It's dad's alma mater and Jared likes young coaches.  Could have been a terrific fit.

Unless Holmquist is the type to string along three other schools for "3 or 4 months," then it wasn't common knowledge. Trine was one of four then two finalists. The "steal" part being the MIAA getting a recruit when three WHAC teams were pushing not insignificant hoop money at him.

With the topic of the different NCAA divisions, it'll be interesting to see if Davenport will be NCAA DII in the near future.  Word is that they are planning to re-apply as they hired a consultant who believes their chances are very high of getting in this time around.

Something must be going on over at Davenport.  Chris Hughes, Calvin men's soccer coach, just left to go to Davenport as their men's soccer coach.  As a Calvin alum and with all of the success he has had, one would think he wouldn't leave unless they were going NCAA DII.

I think we've known that D2 was their direction for some time now. They applied last year, but didn't get accepted. Every indication was that they were going to heed the advice of the membership committee and re-apply (and probably gain acceptance).

Even if they go DII, they wouldn't be allowed to compete in the tournament for 3 years due to provisional status. Have to say barring some unforeseen "great deal" from Davenport, this is a pretty big kick to the shorts especially coming within a year of Chris Hughes essentially claiming to be the caretaker of the program and cultivator of Dr. Z's dream....real headscratcher for me and I'm sure the players are having a hard time with this one....

K2D:  This is a loss for the Calvin soccer program, to be sure.  But Chris made the very difficult decision to accept the Davenport offer based on what was best for his family's situation.  He is a guy of great integrity and sensitivity, and I completely understand and support his reasons for this move.  Let's hope Calvin can attract another head coach to build on the last 10 years of Chris' leadership.

Jordan Brink agreed to do a Q&A piece for FFTMAG:

He tells us a little bit about his off-campus semester, and how he and his teammates are all hungry to get the job done in '12-13.

Items such as this are great contributions to the board. Thanks.

That said, let me know when players won't confess to buckling their chinstraps, packing their lunch pails, being hungry for success, ready to give 110%, and feeling like nobody believes in them.

Really surprised by this news.  Will be a big lose for sure and very interesting to see who the replacement is.  Calvin has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in soccer over the last number of years.

Being a (probable) DII head coach will get him DII type-pay.  Had to influence his decision one would think.
