Sad news about coach Hughes.  All he did was make 2 championship games in 3 years, and it still wasn't enough to become one of the "anointed" ones.   ;)

Do you honestly believe that Calvin thought Coach Hughes wasn't successful enough, or didn't want him to stay?  Clearly he was recruited away by a more lucrative financial package that Calvin simply can't or won't match for the head soccer coach position.  I don't fault either party, that's just the realities of life, and we shouldn't cast stones at either Coach Hughes or Calvin because this happened.  I wish him all the success in the world at Davenport and am very grateful for the work he's done to build Calvin's mens soccer into a nationally competitive D3 program.

On a more relevant note, big thank you and +k to everyone who is posting fresh hoops recruiting info on this board for all MIAA teams.  That type of information coming from informed sources is a big reason I continue to check the board during the off season.  Thanks again!

Any D3 coach in any sport who wants to move up the ranks is going to jump at the chance to make that move. Good luck to him. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to leave a program as successful as Calvin's.

Here's a piece of breaking recruiting news. Calvin missed out on Kansas-bound McDonald's All-American Perry Ellis and it's all Ryan Terpstra's fault.

Any D3 coach in any sport who wants to move up the ranks is going to jump at the chance to make that move. Good luck to him. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to leave a program as successful as Calvin's.

For starters, I think HCG hits the nail on the head in regards to why Hughes would leave. The brief info I've heard about it was that Chris wanted to be a full time coach and Calvin wouldn't give him that opportunity but D-port would. He very much wanted to stay at Calvin but it didn't make dollars or cents to. This brings up an entirely different conversation as to why KVS is the only full time coach at Calvin (I realize he's the "building manager" but that essentially means he doesn't do anything but coach) and he has probably had some of the worst results over the past 5 years compared to other programs such as mens and womens soccer, volleyball, XC, and T&F. If I were Hughes, I'd be completely fine leaving especially looking at the circumstances that I just listed in regards to a little bit of inequality of treatment of coaches (big props to the programs I just listed, you do amazing work).

In regards to NCF, I wouldn't consider going to NAIA a "jump". I'd put it at about the same level, maybe a little lower in terms of competition depending on the sport (in terms of strength of schedule, D-port is a pretty significant step down from Calvin). Now, if they DO move up to DII which is not set in stone and would not allow D-port into the NCAA's for 3 years regardless, then it would be a step up after a few years in terms of coaching. Who knows, I for one h*pe that Chris does well as he is a great Christian coach, father, and mentor and did amazing things for the Calvin program, but it would be a crying shame if he never came back to Calvin.

Eric Jipping, a 6-5 F/C from Plymouth Christian, will attend Calvin. A knee injury cut his senior season short but he finished his high school career as a 1,000 point scorer.

Edit: forgot to mention that the decision came down to Calvin and Hope.

It is always bad when an athlete losses part of his/her senior season. Good luck to him at Calvin.
