Sorry Calvin fans. According to Matt Van Dyk's coach, he's going to Oakland as a preferred walk-on, Cornerstone or Hope.

Ah, the preferred walk-on offer ... the three-card monte of D1 men's basketball.

Yeah, sounds almost as sketchy as paying $40gs for the possibility of maybe making the JV team.

It only costs half that to win a "national title" at Grace...

As an outside who obviously covers Division III on the whole... I haven't had the MIAA in my discussions or thoughts when talking top conferences in the country in the last few years. Those would go to ones like UAA, ODAC, NESCAC, WIAC, CCIW. I would even say conferences like the OAC and NCAC may be better from top to bottom then the MIAA.

The MIAA would be an average to slightly above average conference in my mind. They don't have the depth they used to have, it isn't that competitive from night to night and team to team... it has slipped. I have appreciated what the conference has brought to the table over the years, but when the only game I concentrate on in the conference schedule is Hope vs. Calvin because of the rivalry (when I used to focus on games involving Albion, Trine, etc.)... then the conference is down a bit.

As for a computer system picking the at-large bids... no way. No computer system is going to be able to measure intangiables in Division III, especially when it is far more regionally based then say the D1 RPI system. Sure... we might go to a system that allows all games to count, but there will still be regionally based decisions before at-large teams are selected. You are opening up a hornet's nest of problems when one region gets too many teams based on a computer when some of those teams probably won't deserve it. Schools in weak conferences (i.e. Cabrini) showed that they were better than their numbers indicated... which is why having a human element in the decisions is key.

Thank you for your post.  It is good to have input from someone that regularly sees a bigger picture.

Realist, haven't heard from you in awhile. Been on vacation?
Glad someone noticed I wasn't posting. :) :)  The ground has been prepared, and the seeds have been planted.  It is going to be interesting to watch if the Knights next year can live up to the expectations some people are placing on them.  I enjoyed reading Knightslappy's blog on who might play etc.  I appreciate his optimism, but also remember these same players peed
all over themselves down at Trine on Feb 15th.  For now I am adopting the Mizzo saying of " show me".  WOTS is I am not the only one that will be keeping a close eye on how the team does next year.   ;) ;) ;)

Hard to not notice when one of the few people who agrees with you isn't around ha ha. I'm pretty sure all of "Knight Nation" will be watching, even if it only consists of alumni since the team doesn't win enough to garner the attention of the students on campus. #disappointing

For a real comparison lets look at how many of those coaches have 20 win seasons for the last 10 years, and # of NCAA appearances.

I hope you're not referring to the D1 coaches that were listed, because you absolutely cannot make "20 win comparisons" with them. They simply play more games. A 20 win season in D1 is the same percentage as about 17 wins in D3.
My intent was to reference the list of D3 coaches.  20 win seasons are easier to obtain if one wins the MIAA tourney, and plays in the NCAA tournament.  I don't think I was cherry picking at all.  Everyone knows that Calvin has had five 20 win (+) seasons with KVS.  We also know none of them gave been in the last 6 seasons which would indicate a downward trending performance. :)

Douma had seven 20-win seasons in his 12 years at that school.

"During his tenure at Calvin from 1984-1996, he posted 254 wins with 72 losses for a scorching .793 winning percentage. Douma's teams won six MIAA titles and earned nine NCAA post-season berths. Besides the national title, his squads gained entry to the quarterfinals twice and the semifinals once."  He was 131-28 versus MIAA teams, or something like .823 w/p.
Ed. had more 20 win seasons in 12 years at Calvin than the current coach has in 16.

Also had way better talent.   Honderd, Sall, Davis......Calvin's had no one close to those guys the last 7 years.
