I agree, HCG and almcguirejr, it did seem unusual to issue a release about the finalists. The WIAC schools do that, but that seems to be a part of the state's hiring practices.

Not just unusual, but potentially damaging to the candidates.  Not only does it become known that they were passed over for someone "better", but most job seekers have no desire for their current employer to know they are actively out looking for something else.  I just can't imagine what the college was thinking.  Perhaps in their zeal to be transparent, they forgot to consider the impact on their candidates.

I was heavily chastised a couple years ago for making this very same point.  :-\

I think all the "finalists" were assistants, right?

If you're an assistant, it's pretty much accepted that you'll look for head coaching spots. I'm pretty sure every coach/athletic department would give their blessing to assistants searching.

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter that they were assistants.  If you're a VP, it's pretty much accepted that you'll be looking for a CEO job.  It's understood that anyone with ambition in any job might aspire to the next level and most employers in most fields accept that reality.

But that still doesn't mean it isn't damaging when it becomes known that a) you were looking to leave NOW; and b) you weren't good enough to be chosen.  It can be a real problem when your current employer knows you're a "short-timer".  Or maybe your current employer won't mind, but it sure won't help you when your next prospective employer sees the press release and sees that you were already passed over.  This is pretty basic HR practice; most employers won't even do a private reference check nevermind a press release until they are very close to final offer.

I think it can be agreed to by all reasonable parties that athletics departments are not "most employers." :)

Olivet made a mistake in sending out the press release with the 4 names on it.  They are a private institution and their effort to be transparent backfired.  It appears now, Chris Coles, was at best their fifth choice.

I would agree with that.  The mistake was the initial press release of which that info could have been kept in-house.

I don't agree with that because Olivet has been so bad, you need any sense of optimism and excitement for the program.  This "glimps" of the future is supposed to do just that.

You appear to be forgetting the previous 4 years with McClary there.  They were in the top half of the MIAA.  Besides, you don't give a glimpse of the future with 4 candidates you wait until you've hired one man to lead the program and THEN announce it to the fan base and let the excitement build.  At the D3 level it should be handled a bit differently than, for example, University of Michigan hiring a football coach and the story being plastered on ESPN everyday.  What if a school announces the 4 finalists, picks the one they feel is the best qualified and then the entire fan base is disappointed because they wanted one of the other 3 announced candidates.  Instead of building excitement in the fan base with that new hire you've now created disappointment because they wanted "the other guy".

I don't know if I'd classify it a rumor but it was mentioned on this board in passing some time ago that someone thought Jordan Myrick would end up at Hope eventually.

from Steven Bell's twitter
Jorddan Myrick released from CMU, looking at GVSU and LSSU

So the anti-hope transfer torch and pitchfork society can rest a little easier tonight.

Also maybe a little further clarity on the Chris Coles to Olivet story.  Today the SVSU head coach resigned, so its not hard to imagine Coles may have either known or figured it out and went out looking for a new gig.

Interesting timing anyway.

Mitch Vallie has been granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA. Will retain Sophomore eligibility for next season. (Apparently there is still some paperwork pending).

I've learned from a friend of a very reliable source that Chris Coles was not a last minute applicant.  Sounds like at least one or two of the finalists withdrew their names (was not clear exactly when or for what reason(s)), and as others have mentioned the ever "unpredictable" nature of search committees and search processes led to a reconsideration of other finalists/near finalists, including Mr. Coles.  I personally wouldn't be a proponent of naming finalists, but judging by the amount of conversation generated on this board among many with little close connection to OC, it's not hard to imagine that among the Olivet Nation there must have a been a great deal of conversation, speculation, and interest generated whether you liked the idea of a press release or not.

While Olivet may have difficulty competing for MIAA titles on a regular basis, I for one am hoping that they can get back soon to being a formidable opponent--it will strengthen the conference significantly.
