schedule surfing today, came across Lawrence Tech who will be resurrecting their basketball program after 40 years.  LT will be playing Olivet and Adrian this year from the MIAA.  With the WHAC now at 12 teams those MIAA/WHAC match-ups will become a lot more sparse.

Despite having conducted zero practices LT has a roster......

A couple West Michigan kids, and apparently Southfield is attractive to kids from Northwest Michigan.

Tom Kempf was hired as the head coach, he had been an assistant at Aquinas for awhile, way back when, he was assistant at Michigan for Johnny Orr and Bill Frieder.

The dreaded D1 transfer conversation gets stirred up with the news that Jalen Bouma will be coming to Calvin this fall.  Jalen, who prepped at Ann Arbor Huron, was on his way to becoming a two-sport Knight two years ago, but Eastern Michigan University turned his head with a baseball scholarship. He played baseball at EMU his freshman year, but red-shirted his second year.  He'll immediately improve Calvin's baseball fortunes, and could contribute a healthy dollop of speed and depth at the point guard position on the basketball floor during his two or three years at Calvin.

I'm thinking he'll find it difficult to crack the hoops roster, especially if he's been away from the game for a couple of years. Calvin shouldn't be hurting for PG depth this coming year.

But I'm already anticipating one or two surprises when the final roster comes out, so who knows.

I saw Bouma play at the Class A state semi-finals and finals two years ago (won by K-Central) and found a couple of of my comments made at that time. FWIW here they are:

Despite the fact that Bouma doesn't start he is the third leading scorer on the River Rats team at 10 per game. I suspect that most of those points come in transition. He's got excellent quickness and great hops. I saw him two hand a dunk in pregame warmups and he's a sure ball handler. The Huron senior I sat next to told me that Jalen is a terrific baseball player.

I saw Bouma play last weekend at the Breslin and while he didn't shoot particularly well he did manage to score a combined 17 points in the semis and finals in 41 minutes of PT. What impressed me most was his ability to handle the ball in traffic against quick, pressing Class A defenses that emphasize ball pressure. He led his team with 8 assists in the two games and would have had at least 2 more in the semifinal if his teammates hadn't blown rather easy inside shots. At the same time Jalen only made one turnover and demonstrated he's really tough to double. If he comes to Calvin as is expected, he will offer a level of quickness to the Calvin backcourt not seen in a very long time.

"Pro" basketball - the ABA - coming to Grand Rapids.  I put pro in quotes, as the players will only be paid part of the home gate, and will not be paid for away games.

Could put him on the JV squad for a year, have him dress varsity and see if that shakes the rust off

I was definitely thinking along those lines as well. More guard spots will open up after this year, and Calvin can always use the quickness dynamic, but I'm not sure a 3rd year college kid would be thrilled to play JV. I'd love to see him in the system though.

It won't take a 21 year kid much time to "shake the rust off", especially if he's been playing at all....anything.  "Elite" speed and athletic ability can cover up many basketball deficiencies, espceially at the PG spot in the MIAA.  At the risk of losing karma, I'll refrain from inserting names of anyone who may fit this mold, current or not.

Olivet's schedule is out:  http://www.olivetcomets.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/schedule

The Hillsdale game is an exhibition, the Central Michigan game is a real game.  Potentially 4 in-region games, 2 from the MSJ tournament, Bethany and Baldwin-Wallace.   As you can see the Comets have indeed pulled out of the tournament in Orlando with Hope, IWU and Grace Bible.  Olivet is still looking for 1 more game.

FYI: It's now officially Baldwin Wallace University ... No hyphen and university instead of college ... Maybe the Hope old-timers can like BW now the name has changed ;-)

Whatever the official name, it's still Bald Wally to me! ;D

The school's website says that the hyphen was dropped as part of the name change in order to facilitate Internet searches for the school. But in so doing the school's administration has paved the way for historical confusion. People will think that the school was named after some guy named Baldwin Wallace (a la William Paterson, Bob Jones, Oral Roberts, Robert Morris, James Madison, etc.), but it was in fact named after two different people: John Baldwin, the Methodist educator who founded Baldwin Institute, and James Wallace, the local landowner who donated the money to start a nearby school for German immigrants that would be named German Wallace College. The two schools merged in 1913 to form Baldwin-Wallace College. Hence, the hyphen served a purpose.

Wondering if anyone has insight in regards to the recent Hope grads who are playing overseas, or in Krombeen's case, contemplating playing abroad?  Or any other recent MIAA grads....
