National Honors Court awards for 4 Hope players:

http://www.hope.edu/2012/07/11/basketball-players-honored-academics

Looking at the complete listing from the NABC, Kalamazoo also had 4 players named to the National Honors Court.  That makes for 8 MIAA athletes - quite impressive.

The Honors Court salutes varsity student-athletes who meet these qualifications:

1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.

2. Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year.

3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.

4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Institution.

Nationally, 429 men's basketball players qualified for inclusion on the Court, including only 162 from Division III.

It is interesting when one starts to cross reference these academic awards.
From the MIAA site:
" Fourteen MIAA Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-America® Honors
A total of 14 MIAA student-athletes were named to the Capital One NCAA Division III Academic All-America® Team during the 2011-12 academic year, including seven who acheived first team Academic All-America® recognition.
The recipients are:

Steve Mauk, Adrian: Football (1st team)
Miles Colago, Calvin: Soccer (2nd team)
Rebecca Kamp, Calvin: Volleyball (1st team - Academic All-America® of the Year)
Lizzie Kamp, Calvin: Volleyball (2nd team)
Carissa Verkaik, Calvin: Basketball (3rd team)
Mike Harden, Olivet: Swimming (1st team)
Chelsea Wiese, Hope: Swimming (3rd team)
Kevin Lodewyk, Kalamazoo: Swimming (3rd team)
Laura Tjepkema, Hope: Softball (3rd team)
Alex Dombos, Kalamazoo: Tennis (1st team)
Kelsey Hassevoort, Kalamazoo: Tennis (1st team)
Dan Kerr, Calvin: Track and Field (1st team)
Greg Whittle, Calvin: Track and Field (1st team)
Nicole Michmerhuizen, Calvin: Track and Field (3rd team)

This year marked the first year that Division III student-athletes have had their own separate Academic All-America® category. In previous years, Division III student-athletes were considered part of a College Division category with NCAA Division II and NAIA student-athletes.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Nearly 250 MIAA student-athletes have achieved Academic All-America® recognition since the program began in 1973."

Aaaah - almost ten pm and already down to 89 degrees!  Previous record of 98 degrees on July 17 was already obliterated by 11 this am.  Our thermometer topped out at 104+, but won't guarantee its accuracy.

Even in 1988 (when Mrs. Y was seriously pregnant, our AC died, and we had 7 days over 100), I've never recorded a temperature higher than that.  (Mrs. Y was fortunate to have very understanding co-workers and bosses - she would go into work and promptly fall asleep for several hours, since there was no way to sleep well at home.  Years later we would have gone to a motel, but there was no way we could afford it in 1988.)

We didn't have AC when we lived in Ypsi either. :)

MOST years we rarely run it.  (And I grew up in Peoria, with no AC, where it often gets hotter than Ypsi.)  I'm guessing your time in Ypsi was nothing like 1988 or 2012! :P

Hey, at least you didn't have to move in AA yesterday like some of us!  Thank God the A/C works in our new place.

Couple more games found from other sites.

Nov 16  Capital vs Alma at Wheaton
Nov 17  Alma at Wheaton

Alma is playing at Wheaton's annual Lee Pfund Classic which has traditionally drawn pretty good fields.  This year it looks like they were only able to get 2 teams so the "tournament" is drawn out over 3 days.

Couple good games here for Alma, Capital will be in-region and I have Capital as the favorite to win the OAC.  Wheaton will probably be right in the thick of the 3-4-5 battle in the CCIW, they graduated an awful lot of good players.

More schedule surfing revealed an interesting signing for Cornerstone.  Shane Moreland from Flint Powers Catholic, his brother Tyler plays at Aquinas.

File this one in the 'time flys' catetgory, I remember watching Shane as a Sophomore at FPC play against Korey Van Dussen/Nate Snugeruud in the Class B State title game.

The GR Press' video report:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci0Wy0Fjk6U

Also on that FPC team was Danny O'Brien who will be mixing it up on the defensive line at Tennessee this fall.

I think Shane sat out last year at Aquinas. Gotta love the WHAC's musical bench game.

Cornerstone has signed three clones: Moreland, Alex Lyle, Luke Morrison.

The Muskegon Heights school mess which has resulted in 'Muskegon Heights Public School Academy' has hired Glen Metcalf to be their new athletic director.

Metcalf spent some time at Olivet.

I'd be surprised if they can even field a football team. All the athletes have left.
