What about Brock Benson and Jordan Daley?  What are their strengths?  Are they primarily scorers, slashers, ball handlers, defenders, or do they have the complete game?  Is Daley more likely a point guard or a shooting guard?

I'm getting to this question late. I don't have a strong opinion about Daley but I'll try to answer, even though I think I only saw him play a couple of times in high school. Some of my impressions of Daley are formed by my conversations with others who have seen him play. Daley is difficult for me to evaluate in part because he played with many other talented players on a team that underachieved, and in part because he played with MSU-bound Drake Harris. It seemed that I--like many people--didn't really spend much time noticing the other guys on the floor who happened to play with the Dantonio/Izzo recruit.

Jordan is clearly a good athlete with a nice upper body that can handle the contact of the college game. At 6'3" I would project he will man the 2 or 3 spot for Calvin. He's not a point guard. Daley has scoring ability, averaged over 10 a game his senior year and was once named the MVP of the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament.

QuoteIt's really a fourteen person roster. The three unnumbered freshmen (Landsgaard, Brower and Parks) are also listed as JV players so I think you can expect them to do little more than lengthen the bench during varsity games. Absent attrition, they are unlikely to get anything more than token minutes in a couple of varsity games this year. Jordan Daley is the only freshmen who is strictly listed as a varsity player.

Does anyone know whether Brock Benson and Ben Garner at Hope and Jordan Daly at Calvin stand a strong likelihood of being the the regular rotations?   From earlier descriptions I understand that Ben Garner is both a good shooter and an excellent point guard.  What about Brock Benson and Jordan Daley?  What are their strengths?  Are they primarily scorers, slashers, ball handlers, defenders, or do they have the complete game?  Is Daley more likely a point guard or a shooting guard?

Don't let the silence of Hope fans on this question mislead you.  Benson and Gardner are both legit, and the Hope fans I've talked to are excited to see the season get rolling.  And, as someone mentioned, Wittenbach seems to have done all the right things over the summer, and Jordan Denham is showing great potential as well.  Parisi (up from jv) showed great promise last season and should be a great additon too.  I expect a lot of shooting options this season.

Daley doesn't have one defining or exceptional skill. All-around wing who plays both ends of the court, decent athlete, good hoops IQ. He was good for the West Michigan Lakers 17U before breaking his wrist, then GR Christian had the kind of mix last year where every player looked a little worst then they actually are.

It will be difficult to add football in this economic environment.

There is zero chance that Calvin adds football without a large donor or group of donors covering the cost of starting up the program/facilities.  Now, in this financial environment, I would imagine that the donor(s) would also have to endow some of the ongoing costs.  And there is still that nagging issue of head injuries that is dogging the entire sport at all levels right now.  I'm much less optimistic about the prospects for a Calvin football program than I was ten months ago.

33 schools have added football since 2008.... the worst economic downturn in 70 years.  17 more will add football over the next 3 years.

Calvin Christian High School, Grand Rapids Christian High School, Unity Christian High School, Grand Rapids South Christian High School, Holland Christian High School  all play football.

You cannot have a hockey program and claim concussions is a worry, this is invalid as an argument.

There is just no excuse anymore.

Albion's roster is posted

http://www.albion.edu/sports/mens-sports/basketball/roster

Chris Hutton returns from injury along with Mike Smith who disappeared midway through last season.  I'm not immediately familiar with any of the Fr.

I don't see Kolin Kazen, that would be a major loss. ??

If Kazen had a falling out with his coaches, his little brother probably wouldn't be there now.  If it was a "minor" injury setback, he'd still be listed, so......grades or serious injury?  Anyone, anyone....

any chance of Colin Voss ending up at Hope someday?  Strong connections with NVA....he would be another nice get, if you can get him to work hard everyday and cut back to the tude'

Wondering if that's a simple mistake on the web posting.

I believe it's been shown that Women's soccer has the highest concussion rate (on a per player basis) of any NCAA sport.

13wapiti

The elder Kazen suspended for seven games-No speculation on my part why.

Gregory Sager

Does Kolin Kazen's suspension include the exhibition game vs. Oakland, 13wapiti, or does it apply only to regular-season games? I have a vested interest in this, since the seventh game of the regular season for the Britons will be their 12/18 contest with NPU at Kresge Gym.

Perception matters much more than fact--just turn on the tv and watch either side's political ads.  The negative PR for football in America over the past 18 months has been overwhelming.  Also, even if Calvin's investments aren't in as poor of a condition as the mlive article states, and even if a football program were to be funded 100% with private donation $$, the perception (amongst alumni and especially underpaid faculty) would be that Calvin has its priorities backwards as an institution.  Politics matter, and politics are often grounded in perception more than reality.

We also know that inertia tends to be the default in anything in life.  We're not going to eliminate any existing sports unless there is a real problem.  But to add football?  That is a big step that will require a break with 100+ years of inertia, and all the dominoes are not exactly lined up perfectly.

That's very unfortunate.  I can tell you, from a person that has talked to people that work in other West Michigan colleges/universities, that Calvin is not the only college/university around here that is having financial problems.
