Not up to Nate Silver standards, you say HopeConvert?

What can we say?
*Two evenly matched halves?
*If this game counts, Hope will lead DIII in per game scoring margin for some time to come?
*Too bad Nate ruined his perfect night with the missed free throw . . . but he can hope the game counts toward his season percentages.
*And isn't this a bit sad for the new team, and a little embarrassing for North Central (albeit appreciating that they apparently had a team drop out)?
*Can one fault the Hope players, with starters all playing less than 20 minutes, for playing on?  (I think not.)
*It's gym practice before the real game tomorrow night?

On a positive note, almost 25% of College of Faith students are on the basketball team.

Anyone ever seen a 100-pt win before?

Ha! Some prediction that turned out to be.

This boxscore below has to be seen to be believed. The only box score I can ever remember seeing that was as astonishing as this one was a few years back when one of Grinnell's opponents went 80-100 from the floor

Without having been at the game I have to believe we could easily come up with a team comprised entirely of MIAA board posters who could have lost by less than 98 points. Congrats to KS for missing the over/under by a mere 2 points.

Wow.  My favorite stat is Faith's 0 assists to 37 turnovers.  Holy crap.

I love that the mobile version of MIAA.org says, under the score tab, that "there are no games scheduled today".

Mobile version of miaa.org is AWFUL

It's been all Tyler Kruis so far for the Knights, who has half of their points.  Calvin up 38-30 at the half.  Looks like a lot of people made the trip over to Holland to watch the volleyball team play.  Seats aren't very filled in Van Noord.

Quick math says that's not a good ratio.

My favorite stat was points in the paint.  72-2

Central Michigan 76  Olivet 62
...this didn't go to bad, I think this Garner Small for Olivet might be one to watch for this year.

Albion 78  Manchester 63  .....very comfortable win against a really young, rebuilding Manchester team.

They will have to compete with the volleyball game again tomorrow.   Calvin wins 3 sets to 1 to head to the National Championship game.

QuoteCalvin wins 84-53

An interesting first home game in what it demonstrated about the potential of the this season's team.  Dominant in the center position with 37 points, 29 by Kruis and 8 by Stout.  Stout looked like a big improvement over the backups from last year even though he is still a little unsure of himself.  He shot decently, rebounded, and defended well.  After the comments from the Ferris game, I expected that Mickey DeVries might start over Tyler Dykstra; but Dykstra played much better than Mickey on defense and rebounding tonight.  Mickey was in the wrong position on defense far too often and gave up numerous rebounds.  Mitch Vallie looked good as a backup to Jordan Brinks at shooting guard.  He handled the ball well, shot decently, and really hustled.  De Boer shot well and  had a good game.  In the few minutes that Daley was in at the end of the game, he showed why he may end up playing quite a bit before too long.  Calvin looked solid even though they shot poorly during the first half.  As the coach said during his postgame interview, they just seemed too pumped up and excited the first half.  But the second half showed what they can do.  Among Brinks, Vallie, Powell, and De Boer they have some decent outside shooters available when they need them.

The basketball game is at 3pm and the volleyball game at 7pm.  People should have enough time to watch Michigan beat Iowa, go watch Calvin basketball try to take home the Tip-Off Tourney Championship, go to Holland and grab a bite to eat at Wendys on the way, and then watch Calvin volleyball try to take home their 2nd NC in three seasons.  Their opponent will be tough, though.  Only 1 loss this season.

It turned out to be a pretty easy win for Calvin against an overmatched Grace squad. This Grace team is clearly a step down from the Allen Durham led Bible Tigers teams that terrorized the NCCAA the last few years. The Knights were a bit lackluster the first 20 minutes, seemed a step slow on defense, and not exactly clicking on offense. But by the second frame Calvin hit its stride, totally ouplaying Grace, breaking down the defense on almost every possession. The only thing missing was the one thing about which I have expressed concern before--the lack of a deep threat. With Jordan Brink going 0-4 from the arc, the Knights's outside shooting was MIA pretty much the entire game. Calvin went 3-15 on three pointers and two of them came in the last 5 minutes, long after the outcome was decided.

The good news is that Tyler Kruis looks primed for a big season. He looked fluid, smooth as silk all night, hitting on an array of moves, using either hand with equal ease. He totally befuddled any Grace defender with excellent footwork and a soft touch with either hand going 13-16 from the floor. Tyler was the beneficiary of some excellent passes, including some pretty no look dishes from Snikkers, who appears liberated from the burden of having to lead the team in scoring. Now that last season's cavalry company is hale and healthy once again, Tom is able to help the team by doing was he does best--breaking down defenders and grabbing rebounds. He only took 5 shots but still did much to help his team win.
