Clean sweep for the league tonight.
In addition to Calvin's beat down of the Anderson Ravens, Adrian handles Sienna Heights 62-40 and Olivet hangs on for its first win of the season in Kentucky, beating Union College 83-80.

Olivet's win was a surprise, though not as big a surprise as Grinnell's Jack Taylor who scored 138 tonight in a win over Faith Baptist. David Larson scored 70 for the losing team.

Grinnell and Faith Baptist combined to average a FGA every 11 seconds!

I can read those numbers, but I cannot comprehend them.

Here is the box score from Grinnell:  http://faith.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/boxscores/20121120_genl.xml

Jack Taylor took 58 (3 shots per minute) of the 66 FGA by Grinnell in the second half.  No other starter attempted a shot in the second half.  Taylor was 18-39 on 3pt shots in the second half.  He had 80 points in the second half. The rest of the team scored 14.

Faith Baptist has this game listed as an exhibition on their schedule.

I'm not too sure this will be recognized as a legitimate NCAA record.

In a game they won by 75 points, I find this performance MUCH more disgusting than praiseworthy.  SHAME on Jack Taylor (and especially on his coach). >:(

I used to think Grinnell was kind of interesting and clever; now I find them an embarrassment to d3 (and the human race).

The Sienna Heights team I watched Adrian manhandle last night beat Aquinas 63-57 the other night.  Hope and Calvin should have absolutely no trouble with the Saints.  At least I think.

The human race??  Really?  It's just a basketball game.    ::)

You kind of know what you're getting into when scheduling Grinnell though. I don't have a problem with it.

Does anyone know if Hope will have a video feed of this weekend's GRSHOF games?

Over/under on 2500 fans if Calvin hosted Grinnell in a non-conference matchup. I have to imagine there would be a lot of people interested to come watch.

Never having seen the Grinnell system in action, it's difficult to know what adjective to ascribe to the kind of play they employ. At the very least though, I find the record to be meaningless. The three highest scoring games in NCAA basketball have been scored by a Grinnell player so maybe instead of calling it an NCAA record, we can call it a Grinnell record. This morning, the GMA reporter who mentioned the new record cluelessly said that Taylor "could not miss" apparently oblivious to the fact that the box score shows Taylor missed 58 shots. That number of missed shots is 21 more than Tyler Kruis has taken in three games, the most on Calvin's team. Last night's game at VNA was about as fast paced as you will see the Knights play and the entire Calvin team took 36 fewer shots than did Jack Taylor. Faith Baptist's turnover problems (they committed a mindboggling 49, with one player getting 16 and another 15) certainly contributed to Taylor's record night.

What bothers me most about this is not the huge number of points scored with "the system".  That's the way they play all the time, so fine - score a lot of points and give up a lot of points as well.  What bothers me is that they obviously changed their own system with one goal in mind - have this kid break the record.

From the d3hoops article:

"Grinnell traditionally subs players in and out in waves, with no player playing more than around 20 minutes. That did not happen tonight, or on the night in which Lentsch scored his 89 points, as the offense was clearly altered to favor a particular player."

If it bothered Faith, then they should have made an adjustment to stop this one player from scoring so much.

Grinnell and Jack Taylor are getting their 15 minutes of fame this morning on the 4 letter network.
They have devoted 7-10 minutes of the 9 am Sportscenter to this.  Just think what this is doing for the Grinnell brand. ::).  Grinnell is probably really trending on Twitter right now. :-\ #whocares

So you wouldn't have had a problem if Snuggs had played 40 minutes against CoF and scored 68 points - just so he could set a record of some sort?

I would LOL at Hope for doing it, but I don't know that I would have some moral disapproval of it.
