The greatest stat of the night -- er, Knight -- is 8 pounds, 10 ounces.
That's the size of the package presented by oldknight's son and daughter-in-law in the form of oldknight's first grandchild -- a bouncing and bruising boy described by OK as a pure power forward who needs just a little seasoning before he takes over for Tom Snikkers in a year or so.
Congrats to my fine friend, and best wishes to young Tyce David (nice middle name, by the way).

Congratulations Grandpa Old Knight!!  I think those initials mean future QB for the Knights in their inaugural football season in 2030.

Goodknight was thinking more of a Brian Urlacher type to terrorize MIAA QB's.

But like you, my son--a former running back--did note the TD initials and smiled.

Flying Dutch Fan

Rough weekend for the Dutchmen and they are fortunate that they came out of it 1-1. Friday night fantastic shooting from the field and the line, but too many offensuve rebounds and too many trips to the line for CU cost them the game. Corrected those downfalls on Saturday, only to not be able to shoot the ball well, save for Chase DeMaagd who didn't miss. Still a lot to learn for this team, mostly I believe it's about learning their roles, since its new for so many of them (starting versus off the bench, new to the varsity, being the focus of everyone else defense versus DK being that focus last year). Keep learning from each game and they'll get there.

Congrats to oldknight and family!!  Enjoy the grandson. So if you were oldknight before you were a grandparent, does that now make you ancientknight?

That's one possibility. In view of the weekend's events I am considering a board name change and will entertain suggestions. ;)

On the other hand, not every suggestion will be given serious consideration.

Some random observations from Saturday evening:

1) Wes Hudson and Tom Snikkers both get two first-half fouls.  Kim Elders, who apparently has accepted KnightSlappy's logic, gives Hudson a break and then puts him back in, to end the game with 29 minutes played.  KVS follows the 2-fouls-and-you-sit-the-half rule, and Tom Snikkers ends the game with two fouls and but 20 minutes played.

2) I was impressed with all of Calvin's guards.  Is Rietema related to the volleyball star named Rietema?

3) With so many new players, I have assumed that this Hope team has more upside for improvement during the season than did last year's more experienced team.  With everyone playing Friday and all but one player getting floor time on Saturday, I assume that the early season strategy is player and team development . . . or perhaps it also reflects the similar talent levels among the guards?

4) Hope will benefit from more 3-point baskets from its perimeter guards, and should gain such when Steve Wittenbach and Grant Neil return.  That, in turn, will create more opportunities for the post players.

5) Brock Benson looks to be a future all-league player.  Very smooth moves and good defensive control of his body.

6) Kudos to Chase DeMaagd for a well-earned, game-changing, perfect night that he can long remember.

David and Megan Rietema are first cousins and both are outstanding student-athletes.  Megan might be a smidge taller than David.

David's older sister, Betsy, was one of the greatest basketball players in Grand Rapids Christian HS history who want on to have a fine career at Valpo.  Quite an athletic family...

Speaking of Grand Rapids Christian, congrats to anyone out there associated with them, as they won a football state title last night in epic fashion.  Also congrats to anyone associated with South Christian, who took home a state title on Friday night.

Trine dusts off Manchester (Calvin's next opponent) 78-61. I casually followed the scoreboard and it seems the game was closer than the final score represents (as the saying goes).

Alma 69 Heidelberg 66

Alma survives a real close back and forth game with Heidelberg.  Fr. DJ Beckman with 7 straight Alma points in the final couple minutes to swing the game in Alma's favor.  Beckman finished with 17 points.

Albion 91 Purdue-North Central 80
