It appears that Calvin last beat Wheaton in '05-06. That seems like a long time ago.

I remember that win really turned around Calvin's season that year.  Calvin was struggling heavily going into the game with an ugly showing at the Thanksgiving HOF tourney, and it looked like it wasn't going to be pretty playing against a Wheaton team that was out for blood after getting knocked out by Calvin the season before in the NCAA tournament on a last second tip-in by Dan Aultman.  I didn't realize it's been that long since we had beaten them.

Wheaton has been beating their opponents pretty easily so far this season, and so it will be quite a test for the Calvin and Hope this weekend.

So began the Sager-Draayer love odyssey that weekend?

If memory serves, there were a few treys from THUNDERDAN range and/or falling OB?

And I think Trewhella was pretty legit that weekend too.

I was at that game (the only Wheaton/Calvin game I've ever attended).  Draayer did indeed have shots from out-of-bounds (while falling into the crowd) WITH a hand in his face - seemed like they all went in! ;D

That game was also a large part of why Stephens (of Wheaton) was third team all-CCIW instead of first team.  He had the stats for first-team, but went totally lazy for long stretches of key games.  Coaches tend not to approve of lazy! 8-)

Saw Greg's post just before I posted; everyone in our area of the stands (and probably in the whole building) was going crazy over Draayer's performance!

Believe me, Calvin fans devoutly miss Andy, too.
On a happier note, I'll be in the gym this weekend -- with oldknight and his esteemed brother-in-law from the western suburbs.  May miss the first half of the Hope-Carthage game tonight so we can enjoy some Italian beef sang-wiches from Portillo'ssss.  Wit' peppersssss!! Dat's some good eatin', my friends. :)

I think we may be mixing up dates.

2004-05 was the year Calvin lost AT Wheaton 91-87, and Draayer was 8-12 from beyond the arc.

2005-06 was the year Calvin won vs. Wheaton 84-64 (at the brand new DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland), and Draayer was "only" 6-6 on threes (including a 4-point play). Draayer and Trewhella combined 11-12 that afternoon.

I still believe it is true that no road conference team has won a Friday matchup in the MIAA-CCIW Classic games. I also believe the rotation has been held constant which forms this interesting pattern:

Hope has never beaten Carthage in IL/WI
Calvin has never lost to Carthage in WM

Hope has never lost to Wheaton in WM
Calvin has never beaten Wheaton in IL/WI

*And by never, I mean never in this weekend of games.

Happy Calvin Guy

It appears Wheaton's WETN will provide video of the Hope/Wheaton game Saturday

has an active icon for video on tonight's Calvin-Wheaton game, but not the early Hope-Carthage game.  It appears that the games this weekend involving the Thunder will have video, whereas the games involving Carthage will not.

Lookin' forward to it--the game too. Unfortunately, Baby Knight won't be coming with Opa (or HungarianRhapsodyinBlueDanubeKnight). His mother took the little one shopping on Tuesday--at age 3 days--so I casually mentioned that if he's ready to go shopping maybe I could take him to a ball game or two this weekend. His mother never missed a beat as she said "Sure, as long as you have a lactating boob." :o It's rare that OldKnight is at a loss for words but that was a conversation stopper for me. I've often been called--with justification--a boob, but I've never lactated. Her pithy response tells you all you need to know about why this young mother is the perfect mate for my son and more than a match for her father-in-law.

Planning on heading out to the burbs tomorrow to catch the double header at Wheaton.  Any recommendations on a place walking distance to campus where I can imbibe a bit and watch the Spartans on the tube? I have a feeling I'm going to need to throw back a couple to deal with the "environment"  ;)
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I beg to differ with KnightSlappy.   I was in Wheaton gymnasium in 2005 when Dan Aultman hit a terrific shot so that Calvin could continue on to the historic Kresge gymnasium at Albion College . . .and eventually the Final Four.  :)

I was always only referring to the aforementioned MIAA-CCIW Classic games.

But yes, that was awesome. That tournament run had three of the most entertaining games I've seen.

Hope actually hasn't won a game in Wheaton's gym since 1998.  4 MIAA/CCIW games, 1 NCAA game.  Small sample size and all, but still.

If you think a mile is walking distance, then, there are a few.  Muldoon's a very average Irish Pub (my opinion might be a little skewed here as my only experience here was on "blackout Wednesday" when I was not driving.)  The Bank is my parent's favorite restaurant.  There is a tv or two in the bar and they serve my favorite beverage, Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

May be a lot of us having Italian beef tonight (I prefer dipped), if I can get the Mrs. out of Oak Brook on time.
