You're gonna miss the first half!  Scoreboard lists all times as Eastern (rather than local).

Rhodes was the source, I'll stick with their interpretation of the time zones. ;)

Since sac has drawn our attention to Hope having no "d" I'll weigh in on this one. One thing I admired about Van Wieren's teams is that they generally played with great defensive intensity. I haven't seen that from Hope for the last couple of years. In my judgment the Dutchmen recently have played with spurts of defensive intensity, but not consistent high-level effort. Others have seen more of Hope this year than have I, but the games I've seen have given me cause for concern. I just don't see consistent defensive effort, either individually or in terms of team defense. Defensive effort is the one thing you can control in basketball, and I'd like to see this team play it with more passion. If they don't they're in for a .500 season.

HopeConvert, if you like defensive intensity you should come see the Hope women play this afternoon--they're winning games on defensive execution and forced turnovers.

This afternoon's IWU matchup will tell whether the optimism of FDF and myself is warranted . . . though after the IWU/MC first half last night (reminiscent of Hope v. College of Faith), the odds makers are bullish on IWU.  Still, Hope retains enough of what it had last year--with added talent in the post and Overway having his best year, and players coming back from injury--that they should be capable of more against IWU than the score comparisons would suggest.

From the little I have observed of Hope this year, their defense seems more porous and there's little mystery why--Bunn and Krombeen are no longer playing. For the most part we remember their scoring but both were terrific defenders and their ability to disrupt an opponent's offense is sorely missed. Logan Neil wasn't bad either. It's a lot easier for a big man to defend when his teammates on the perimeter are forcing the other team to set up their offense 35 feet from the basket. That entry pass is just a little tougher to complete when that happens. That's what Hope's women have done so well for years.

Well I didn't particularly think Hope was all that terrific on defense last year either(all things relative), there were moments but in the last dozen years of MIAA Champions I'd probably rate them in the bottom half that group. ( I might have to look that up.)

The difference I 'see' from last to this year is the half a dozen times per game David Krombeen turned an opponents possession into 2 points for Hope, for kicks lets call it a dozen points swing per game.  That's enough to make Hope 9-0 this year and we aren't having this discussion.  I also might have to look-up  the difference in points in transition, I would wager good money its quite a bit lower thus far this year.

While I agree defense and maybe more appropriately defensive effort is the thing you can do most consistently, its often the last and hardest thing for new players to learn and adjust to at the college level.  Hope has a lot of those guys and they're still trying to figure out how those guys fit together.

I ran across this yesterday answering another question for someone.  These are Hope's starts after 9 games for the last 5 years.  All but one had questions about their defense at the same point in the year.  It didn't preclude Hope from having what turned out to be pretty successful years.  Obviously this year remains to be seen.

2013-- 4-5
2012-- 8-1
2011-- 5-4
2010-- 5-4
2009-- 5-4

Ever watch a drunk guy try to walk down a steep hill.  You know whats coming and you want to watch but you kind of feel sorry for the guy.   That's the MIAA's overall and in-region records right now.

Some teams are doing their part.

Calvin had been the drunk guy for two years. ;)

correction noted, I'm dubious to whether Otterbein, NWOhio or SAU will be above .500 when the years ends.

Four games today, my crystal ball stuck its tongue out at me

Kalamazoo at Rhodes, Tenn., 4 p.m.
Adrian at Lawrence Tech, 3 p.m.
Alma at Cornerstone, 3 p.m.
Hope vs. Illinois Wesleyan at Orlando, Fla., 3 p.m.

Thank God I have the Lions to look forward to afterwards ::)

Halftimes:

Adrian 35 Law Tech 24

Cornerstone 39 Alma 28 w/3 to play

IWU 68 Hope 67

Given the physical and mental state of this team this must have been one hell of an effort.  It would be easier to take if Hope hadn't completely blown an 18 point lead.  One thing each Hope loss has had in common is a long stretch of no Fg's and it was nearly 11 minutes with 1 today.   Still, looking grim down 5 with 1:18 and Hope still managed to battle back to tie and then within 1 with chance to win it.

Overway 22, Byers 16

Given the fact that Hope's team apparently is departing significantly from what we expected them to be (Snuggerud and Van Arendonk combined for 17 minutes of playing time) a one point loss to IWU is a pretty impressive result for the Flying Dutchmen. But I'm pretty sure a team make-over in late December isn't quite what Coach Neil wanted as we close in on conference play. I also suspect IWU fans are scratching their heads, wondering what happened to the guy who dropped 40 on the Titans less than 10 months ago.

I apologize if this was commented on previously, but does anyone have any information as to why Van Arendonk and Snuggerud didn't start or play many minutes. Especially Snuggerud, a pre-season All American.
