11-0 Adrian up to # 7 in new poll

Wow, the MIAA has had quite the representation in the #7 spot this season!

When/if it comes down to it Adrian's going to wish they had played someone.

I doubt the people from #15 Wooster (10-2) feel they are nobodies. :)

Adrian is playing someone Thursday and word is it will be live streamed.

Adrian's, Brandon Romain, began playing for the Bulldog's on Dec. 17.  This is at least Romain's 5th college since graduating from HS in 2008.  He attended Post University his freshman year. He transferred to Morehead State for his sophomore year.  He left Morehead after a semester (didn't play) and transferred to Westchester CC.  He played at the University of Detroit last year.  I believe this will complete his college eligibility.  He joins Richaud Pack as being one semester and done at Adrian.

You mean he's done after the season, right? He has a spring semester of eligibility remaining.

I think even they know what I meant..........pull out that Wooster game and the rest of Adrian's schedule was ugly.

I'm a little bit surprised that Calvin didn't receive "any other votes", but perhaps this is because of not much recognition from the national pollsters coming into this season, and perhaps not the toughest schedule so far?  I would think a win over #7 Adrian tomorrow night would start getting them some recognition from the polls if they were to come out victorious.

Yes, he's done after the season.

Every team/league is going to play some bottom feeders, but has the MIAA played more than usual?

I honestly don't know.  Its just the one thing that really stood out to me this year.   The CCIW, HCAC, NCAC and OAC play almost entirely D3 schedules.  Certainly the NCAC and OAC play their share of Presidents and AMCC programs.  The CCIW has the SLIAC and NathCon to pick on.

The MIAA is probably going to play more bottom feeders because we have more non-conference games to fill than our regional neighbors.

Been thinking about this for a bit and grabbed some numbers just to take a look.  As a whole, the records of the teams that the MIAA has played is probably right where you would expect - dang close to .500 (521-527 - .497).    What is more surprising is the distribution of those records (I am not counting the Hope CoF game):

Team     Opponent Win %
Hope     0.650
Alma     0.620
Kalamazoo     0.496
Trine     0.484
Albion     0.477
Olivet     0.469
Calvin     0.449
Adrian     0.362

Thanks to FDF for posting. Massey Ratings are worth looking at too (see link below) and I think they tell an interesting story from the point of view of Massey's power ratings. According to Massey's formula, Hope has clearly had the toughest schedule of any MIAA team, coming in at #10--and Massey includes the "game" with COF. Alma has a power rating of 34. I'm impressed with what Sam Hargraves has done up there this year, going 5-6 against a very good schedule of games. This is a team not to be taken lightly that I believe has a chance at sliding into the top half of the league (check out sac's blog).

Massey has Calvin's power rating at 95 which isn't bad (there are 411 rated teams in D3) and is one spot ahead of 6-5 Defiance, the team Adrian just beat in OT. While Adrian did beat Wooster at Wooster (no small feat), I agree that Adrian's overall competition level hasn't been the greatest. Even with Wooster (power rating of 32) on the schedule, the Bulldogs power rating comes in at 146. We shall see how a school that never has had a target on its back as long as I can remember (and I remember long) reacts when they visit VNA tomorrow as an undefeated, 7th ranked team against a Calvin squad that should be primed and ready.

I promise this will not affect my opinion of Kansas basketball.

I am embarrassed by Calvin's pre-conference schedule this year, and many other recent years.  Get rid of Finlandia and replace with U of Chicago.  Get rid of Grace Bible now that Durham is gone.  Play Ohio schools like Witt-Woo-Otterbein-ONU-OWU-BaldWally.

In effect, this is some seriously affected behavior.

The in-region requirements drive me crazy, and I don't know which administrative district Calvin College is in and all the rest. I also would have liked to see a couple (more) competitive games -- seeing one at VNA would be even better. I also have no idea how 'easy' it is to schedule a game with the Wittenbergs, Woosters, and Otterbeins of the Mid-west -- but I doubt it's as easy as making a phone call. In any event, it seems to me that in the past KVS has been criticized for not playing enough in-region games (when they've had a tougher pre-season schedule with the likes of #1 Wash U at home (which I believe Calvin won). This year, while there has not been blatant criticism of KVS for scheduling issues, there seems to be a fair amount of complaining about how easy Calvin's schedule has been despite an increase (I believe) in in-region games in which Calvin has played. My point is only that it seems to me that Calvin is in a no-win situation. Either Calvin plays the Finlandias of the world or they are criticized for for not playing a tough enough schedule -- which is why I'm so frustrated with the in-region criteria.

Can't really fault KVS for Anderson AND Wabash AND Ripon being quite bad this year. Three opponents who are having their worst season in three or four years.

Again, Massey says Calvin has played a top-100 schedule to date.

You can add Manchester to that list. Calvin's schedule as is will look OK in most years but a number of those teams are struggling this year.

From what I've gathered from postgame comments, we can expect Anderson and Machester to become regular or at least semi-regular fixtures on Calvin's schedule with the new regional game mandate in place.
