If Albion were any better than 9-24 from the line this would be over. As it is, it looks like a nail-biter.

You could say the same for Hope's 3-point shooting...  :P

Amazing how similar Hope and Calvin's games were against Albion this week.

Adrian beat Trine on a layup with 1.2 seconds left.  Amazing that they are still rated 25th nationally.  Calvin was also mentioned as receiving 6 votes.  I don't expect to see Adrian stay in the top 25 as league play progresses.  Hope came from behind after trailing by quite a bit in the first half.  Is this their pattern?

Too much size and firepower for Kalamazoo to deal with at the Rollerdome tonight as the Knights simply overmatched the Hornets. Too much Tom Snikkers as well. As we sometimes see in the MIAA, we are watching a talented player who seems on a mission his senior year. Tom scored 22 points--15 of them in the first half when K tried to guard him without much secondary help. I felt sorry for the Kalamazoo primary defender who struggled to keep Tom away from the basket. Snik scored using a wide and clever array of moves to the hoop and pull-up jumpers. Calvin won all the major categories--rebounding, turnovers and shooting--and that's a recipe for success. There were several times in the first half when Calvin's defense was less than what it should have been, but it went on to totally control Kalamazoo's offense in the second frame, limiting the home team to 18 points on 6-26 shooting and forcing 11 turnovers. Calvin is exactly where they want to be after 3 conference games and the team seems to be progressing nicely.

Calvin is now one win away from matching last year's total.

Hope 68  Albion 64

Overway 16, Snuggerud 13, Gardner 8, Seiler 8

Trips to Kresge are about survival for Hope, always have been.  They survived again, not pretty but its the W they were looking for and they don't have to go back again this year.

This Albion loss came squarely at the FT line, while I would argue greatly that Hope did some terrific things down the stretch of this one to pull it out including 12 second half steals, there in black and white for everyone to see is Albion's 13-28 performance at the line.  Just the D3 avg of 68% gets you 19, 6 more points and those last 3 minutes are about protecting a lead rather than trying to come from behind.

Albion had only 2 FG's the final 7 minutes of the game, I think Hope's D had a little something to do with that.  The difference to me was the play of Ben Gardner and Colton Overway down the stretch.  Almost every play on both ends of the floor one of these two was in the middle of it.

I had sent KS a PM concerning the Posters' Poll (he was the only voter to include Calvin - at #25), that I strongly considered the Knights, but couldn't quite forgive them yet for losing to the mess that is Carthage this year.  Consider them forgiven - Carthage took down #1 North Central tonight!  (Carthage apparently is very much a Jekyll and Hyde team.)

Assuming Calvin doesn't lay an egg against Alma on Saturday, Calvin will be on my ballot next week!

Hope's won 4 in a row at Kresge now.  That hadn't happened since Hope's great run of teams in the mid-90's when they won at Albion five years in a row from 1994 to 1998.

Every one of them has looked and felt the same almost.

2010--Hope 62 Albion 55
2011--Hope 66 Albion 55
2012--Hope 75 Albion 69
2013--Hope 68 Albion 64

I would also add NVA as a difference maker down the stretch.  Given his lack of PT lately, it was surprising to see him on the floor in the last minutes but he responded with some great D and boards, a couple of blocks and 2 big FTs with 2 minutes remaining.

Something that hasn't been mentioned much this year is the shooting ability of Tyler Dykstra. He doesn't shoot a lot, but he's been one of the team's more reliable mid-range shooters. A couple of times last night Hornet defenders floated away from him when he had the ball a step or two inside the three point line, and Tyler calmly knocked down the jumper.
