How about the Dew Crew with chants of "you can't fill it?" I know the boys in orange and blue had a rough shooting night but that's harsh!

"You can't fill it" doesn't work quite as well after fans begin leaving because the game is non-competitive.
Although that "cheer" could have been used at any point in the entire evening, so it is still  relevant and IMHO is effective

I must have missed the game where Hope had 4,500 people in their place.

Congratulations to the Knights.  They played well and showed the maturity and talent we knew had to be there.  I'm particularly happy for Tom Snikkers, who's seen more than his fair share of losses to Hope, and has been such a workhorse for the team.  As we've gotten to know him and his family a bit, I just can't help but be happy for him.

There were moments for Hope, especially (as someone already mentioned) at the start of the second half, where the potential of this team was evident.  Without a good crystal ball, I can't tell you when it will all come together, but I've seen significant improvement game by game, and this was a great learning tool for this relatively young team.  On to Saturday.

I've been telling my students (who have been giving me hassles about the attendance-- or lack thereof) that the reason there were so many empty seats was because the normal boisterous and loud contingent from Holland didn't show up because they were worried about the outcome of the game. While this probably is not true, I have been at Calvin home athletic events when it seemed like there were as many fans in orange/blue as fans dressed in maroon/gold. That was definitely NOT the case last night.

Some interesting numbers:

Hope played seven guys (by my count) who'd never been in a rivalry game (for a total of 74 minutes, 37% of Hope's total). They scored 11 points on 3-14 shooting, collected nine fouls and turned it over nine times.

Calvin played two guys who were new to the series for a grand total of four minutes (2%). They went 0-1 from the floor.

Hope's starting five shot 22.5% from the floor. Calvin's five shot 48.7%.

Tyler Kruis had two field goals and two rebounds.

Last night was Mickey De Vries's first Calvin/Hope game also.  He contributed a lot last night.  He had 7 rebounds the first half in 13 minutes.  The one hand block/catch in the second half was particularly impressive.

Worst Hope loss to Calvin since 1990.  Calvin 95 Hope 68 in the NCAA Tournament.  Also the first H/C game I attended.  Good times.

Fewest points Hope's scored vs Calvin since 1952.  Calvin 84 Hope 43

Wow, you're absolutely right. Didn't even think about him.

Calvin played three guys who were new to the series for a total of 26 minutes (13%). They went 3-5 from the floor, scored six points, and grabbed 11 rebounds.

24%? I'm not a math guy, but I think the 26 minutes would be more like 12.5% of 200 minutes? Doesn't really matter-- the point still remains that Calvin has a lot more experience and it showed. Calvin still had some relative 'youth' out on the court, though. Dykstra, Brink, and Stout each had only one year under their belts.

If any players most clearly reflect the reason for Calvin's dominance last night, it is Mickey De Vries with 75% shooting, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks and and 12 points from Brian Powell.  To have the luxury of experienced players of that ability coming off the bench is a rare treat.  Even several of the players who did not get in until late in the game have solid and successful experience in previous Hope-Calvin games.  What depth!  If I had to choose one picture to symbolize Calvin's dominance, it would be that one hand block/catch.

Calvin's raw defensive efficiency numbers are currently the best the MIAA has seen since at least 2002 (as far back as I can go). Right now barely edging out the 2006 Hope team's 86.4 season mark.

With two big caveats – that the schedule has likely been a bit softer than these others and that the season is far from over with some tough games left – Calvin is currently putting up the best efficiency margin (difference between points scored and allowed on a per possession basis) the league has seen going back through 2002.

That's an impressive collection of teams that has reached two Final Fours (2005 Calvin, 2008 Hope), two other Elite Eights (2005 Albion, 2007 Hope), and an additional Sweet Sixteen (2006 Hope).

I wish I knew a decent way to try to adjust for strength of schedule to see how they "really" compare, but I don't.

You're just making our point - you built a place too big cause you still can't fill it!!!

Both teams have played 7 home games this season and here are the attendance averages:

Calvin - 1832
Hope - 2710

That's with Calvin already hosting a rivalry game.  Remove that one game and Calvin's average is down to 1387 - barely half of Hope's average.  And you have a very good team that should be drawing larger crowds!!
