Duct taped into the southwest corner of Olivet's Cutler Fieldhouse is a wi-fi transmitter that allows the Comets to livestream their home games.  So we have video today.

I was told "we'll never have video here" several seasons ago and that was probably true given how much trouble they had just getting live stats to work.  They've figured it out with about 1/5 the budget and 1/10 the endowment that Hope has.  (I'm guessing on these actual figures btw)

Enjoy your video from Olivet today, doesn't seem that hard.

*disclaimer, the transmitter isn't actually duct taped to the wall

I've always believed that, despite any protestations to the contrary, Hope doesn't stream mostly in order to encourage in-person attendance.

Aha! That's why we can't fill it. Now the truth comes out. Sort of makes a mockery of the Dew Crew's self-congratulatory chant doesn't it? ;)

a.  It was just an opinion; I have no idea of the "truth" about why Calvin can't draw more fans.
b.  Nor do I have any inside info on the truth of why Hope doesn't stream more.  It is just a belief.
c.  I was hopeful we had left this topic behind, but since it was brought up yet again...
d.  ... seems like the Dew Crew exactly accomplished their goal of annoying Calvin fans!

:)

I know--don't read too much into my comments. I think the board debate on the issue is quite funny and has been in good humor among participants . . . most of them anyway. Apparently my ability to contribute in good humor on the subject was greatly lacking. As the inestimable Mrs. Oldknight has told me on other issues, "It's not the first time." While I did make mention to her of Drake Harris and his "committed but looking" comment, I still made it safely to VNA Wednesday night, yet remain in the land of the living. Mrs. OK kept her gun in the holster. She's a good woman.

Attendance at Calvin's home conference games...

- Adrian: 1950
- Alma: 2503
- Hope: 4503

I'm pretty sure the fans of every other team in Division III (except Hope) would find it very hard to believe there is talk of attendance problems at Calvin.

This is the part where we note that 4,503 is likely to be the highest attendance of any game in Division III this year, and that while Calvin is second to Hope in average attendance, they're likely to still finish the season second in Division III in average attendance.

When was the last time any non-Calvin Division III team hosted a game with more than 4,000 in attendance?

Since YOU brought this up, and since my seat at the Hope vs. Calvin Men's BB game last week was on the floor in Sec116, I witnessed MANY empty seats that were included in the "4,000 in Attendance" figure. Guess they must have been guests of Manti Te'o.   ;)  Ahhhhhhh...... That's how you FILL it!!!   :)    :)    :)

Listed capacity is over 4,600 and there were fewer than 500 available as of 9:00 AM that morning (I did count them all online), so I have no problems using 4,000 as a round, conservative figure.

My original comment was mostly intended to be humorous and sarcastic. Fail.

But as an alum I find it absolutely pathetic and embarrassing that Hope can't do this when schools with fractions of the resources Hope has available to them can figure it out and do it quite well.

Slap something together and charge $5, it would be extra revenue and it might even encourage far flung alums to stay in contact with their school and donate a little extra money from time to time..

oldknight: actually I took it in the spirit you intended.  Likely it was MY response that was off target.

Well, anyway, like you I found the whole attendance discussion a little amusing and mostly just a waste of time.  Both schools have much to be thankful for compared to D3 in general.

I found it encouraging that these were the two weakest and half-hearted cheers of the night and they didn't get dusted off until very late in the evening.

Maybe next time we can have a roundtable discussion about how good we have it, I suggest sitting around one of the 3 fireplaces at VanNoord.

Well it didn't take Calvin 10 minutes to get their first FG, it ONLY took 9:59.

Calvin's offense not the worst thing about this game, that award goes to whoever is putting in the Live Stats at Trine.

And Kruis leads Calvin with 2 field goals. The second one a tick before the buzzer.

A wise man once said:

There are good days and bad days. There are games where shots don't fall. There are games where the ball seems to take weird bounces. This happens – and will happen again at some point down the stretch – but this isn't what WANT is about. It's a decision – a repeated decision that's made every moment – to stay calm, stay focused, stay controlled, stay team-oriented, and stay dominant.
