Without Garner Small having played, Olivet still leads Hope at the half, 34-28. Hope is 0-6 from the arc and has committed 12 turnovers.

Snugs with 13 minutes.

And VanArendonk with a goose egg. He did manage to grab one rebound in zero minutes though. Put that in your TI calculator to come up with a 40 minute average and watch it explode.

EDIT: They just changed it and gave him 1 minuteof pt. Darn! I wanted to see fireworks.

And like a lot of games, he has 2 fouls in less than 1 minute of play

What, no follow up comments about 7 pts, 5 rebs in 11 minutes?

I don't usually go crazy over a second half of play of one individual in a loss.  However, it was a nice 11 minutes for NVA.  I mostly enjoyed the 5-6 from the FT line to raise his season FT percentage to 55.1 (27-49)

Stat of the Day:

Hope was out scored 66-18 from the 3 point line in their 2 losses this week.

Hope 6/22 (22%)

Opponents 22/45 (49%)

and going into yesterday Hope was #378 in all of D3 defending the 3.  That will probably drop to about #395 next week.  The NCAA lists stats for 407 D3 programs.

But you're excited enough to single out and criticize same player for a whole 1 minute of play in same loss?  Seems to me second half contributions are kind of important too in a game that went down to the wire, hmmmm?

At this point, I'm not sure Hope will make the MIAA tournament. Too reliant on freshmen, too reliant on one person who probably shouldn't be the person they rely on, and too limited on both ends of the floor, as seen by the three-point disparity. A paint disparity probably wouldn't look much different. As I said earlier, I don't expect any of this to be righted any time soon.

Alas, the satellite party this year won't be nearly as much fun as the past couple have been.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, take a step back. They're tied for second place and have already played @Calvin, @Adrian, and @Olivet. The schedule gets more home-heavy for the Dutchmen the rest of the way.

Hmmmmmmmmm, absolutely, I single out trends that are consistent.  NVA is consistently in foul trouble, because he makes poor decisions defensively and get fouls in cheap spots.  He also is a below average FT, which has contributed to poor performances.  Those are facts and not disputable.  There is ample evidence to support it.  Plenty of game stats to review if u like.  Probably a big reason his PT has gone way down.  If you feel good in his 2nd half in a loss, that is fine.  Snugs had a good game too but hope lost.  So in my opinion it still hurts.  However, I realize some people like individual stuff or team and that is fine for them, but not for me.  If NVA, continues to play 11 min halfs like yesterday, it probably means more PT, and hopefully W's for hope.  The trend and history doesn't support it, but I will be one of the first to acknowledge him with positive affirmation if it does.  I will also be willing to refute to those, when he is in foul trouble and shoot close to 50 percent from the line.

Watching Hope against North Central, Carthage, and Wheaton, my thoughts were that there were a lot of good pieces, but they were still trying to figure out who they were as a team.  It was early, against a tough schedule, so that was OK.

Unfortunately, I feel the same way after seeing them at Olivet yesterday (the first time I'd seen them since Wheaton).  They still look like a bunch of individuals who haven't figured out who they are as a team.  Only now, they're tentative, lack confidence, and don't trust themselves or each other.

Energy, communication, and focus seemed better for much (not all) of the second half, but clearly this team is not where they should, or could, be.  Frustrating.

Yes, it is frustrating.  But one of the things I learned the past couple years watching Calvin play, sometimes the team is what it is.  Underachieving and frustrating to watch.  And even thought I think MN is a good coach, sometimes teams can't be helped or coached.

I wrote that post with all those factors already in mind.

Off-topic, but interesting. Finlandia is joining the Great South Athletic Conference in Women's sports.

I'm assuming the GSAC will be covering a sizeable portion of their additional travel expenses to make this work out.

Almost as silly as San Diego State joining the Big East.

This was one of the big things that made yesterday loss so frustrating, despite the comedy of Matt Neil saying Hope could run the table it was very much a possibility given the schedule they had remaining after yesterday.

None of those 3 road games would have been 'easy' but that's a schedule that is heavily in Hope's favor.  But the way Hope played this past week, none of those home games will be easy either.

They backed out after Boise State backed out. Still.
