Off-topic, but interesting. Finlandia is joining the Great South Athletic Conference in Women's sports.

http://www.d3sports.com/notables/2013/01/finlandia-joins-gsac

I'm assuming the GSAC will be covering a sizeable portion of their additional travel expenses to make this work out.

At least now all those games will be in-region.......oh wait they already are ::).

I doubt they will play regular season conference games. Much like when the NEAC had University of Dallas for a couple years.

Without Garner Small having played, Olivet still leads Hope at the half, 34-28. Hope is 0-6 from the arc and has committed 12 turnovers.

Snugs with 13 minutes.

And VanArendonk with a goose egg. He did manage to grab one rebound in zero minutes though. Put that in your TI calculator to come up with a 40 minute average and watch it explode.

EDIT: They just changed it and gave him 1 minuteof pt. Darn! I wanted to see fireworks.

And like a lot of games, he has 2 fouls in less than 1 minute of play

What, no follow up comments about 7 pts, 5 rebs in 11 minutes?

I don't usually go crazy over a second half of play of one individual in a loss.  However, it was a nice 11 minutes for NVA.  I mostly enjoyed the 5-6 from the FT line to raise his season FT percentage to 55.1 (27-49)

But you're excited enough to single out and criticize same player for a whole 1 minute of play in same loss?  Seems to me second half contributions are kind of important too in a game that went down to the wire, hmmmm?

Hmmmmmmmmm, absolutely, I single out trends that are consistent.  NVA is consistently in foul trouble, because he makes poor decisions defensively and get fouls in cheap spots.  He also is a below average FT, which has contributed to poor performances.  Those are facts and not disputable.  There is ample evidence to support it.  Plenty of game stats to review if u like.  Probably a big reason his PT has gone way down.  If you feel good in his 2nd half in a loss, that is fine.  Snugs had a good game too but hope lost.  So in my opinion it still hurts.  However, I realize some people like individual stuff or team and that is fine for them, but not for me.  If NVA, continues to play 11 min halfs like yesterday, it probably means more PT, and hopefully W's for hope.  The trend and history doesn't support it, but I will be one of the first to acknowledge him with positive affirmation if it does.  I will also be willing to refute to those, when he is in foul trouble and shoot close to 50 percent from the line.

Yup, no doubt he has foul issues, no news there.  But Seiler, Neil, Holwerda and Ray all have similar or lower FT % and I didn't see them singled out for criticism here.  Nor did I see positive affirmation for NVA still leading the team in rebounding and in blocks despite such limited minutes, or for scoring points per minute at a rate that is actually above the team's average.  Seems to me that sometimes players like NVA are criticized based on their perceived potential rather than their actual contributions.  Human nature I guess.

neilrocks

Ok Roundball, you win!  (wow, Ray, Neil and Holwerda, quite a comparison for a 6'10" Division I transfer.  Agree Seiler FT shooting is poor, worse than below average).

It was a great 2nd half, one of the best in his career.  Hopefully, a sign of things to come.

No need to look back at facts, let's just HOPE for the best moving forward, because trends and actual historical performance mean very little.

HOPEfully, no matter what his contributions, Hope will win the rest of the games.

I would be fine with NVA, playing 1 minute or 40 minutes as long as HOPE wins.

It can be difficult sometimes to single out all the players you want to without going over the top and sounding like a complete homer who gives no credit to the other team.  Surely I've never been accused of that, right? ;)

Nate played a good second half and his presence on the floor gave Olivet match-up problems they had difficulty contending with which opened things up for Snuggerud esp. I don't even think Olivet attempted a shot inside of 15 feet when he was in the game.

On the play Hope ran to tie the game with a simple layup it was Nate VA that set the screen on the low block for Seiler to get so wide open.  That doesn't show up in the boxscore.

Both he and Seiler combined to go 9-10 at the FT line, I noted on my blog Seiler changed his FT approach and all 4 of his looked beautiful.  I didn't note anything different from NVA but his shots also looked good.  Those were big points considering it was a game decided on the final play, Hope might not have been in that position without those crucial points.

Adrian Bulldawg Alum

Nice job by the Bulldogs to get some victories to get back into this MIAA and congrats to Eric Lewis for being player of the week.  He truly has given the Bulldogs some wins that they would not have had without him.

I was especially happy to see them blowout K-zoo because I haven't seen any wins in a long while where they didn't just play a defensive game and win by a bucket or 2 in the last few minutes.

Adrian needs to be careful because even though Albion is 0 and 6 in the conference, they've played close games (except for the Olivet calamity).  They only lost by 3 to Calvin and 4 to Hope, both at home which is where this game will be on Wednesday.

Go Bulldogs!

3 point FG margins in conference play,   (3's made - 3's given up)

1.  Olivet      +37
2.  Alma        +24
3.  Calvin      +5
4.  Albion         0
5.  Adrian       -1
6.  Kzoo        -12
7.  Trine       -28
8.  Hope   -32

Coming into conference play this was actually a positive 12 for Hope, they've been bombed in league play thus far.  I'm sure perimeter defense is being discussed in practice a little this week. (that and working on the high ball screen with Ian Jackson Wed.)

Fortunately for Hope,  Trine is having the same problems and has made the fewest 3's in league play thus far.  If either team can swing that into their favor Wed. they'll probably have the advantage.

Turnovers:

Hope has turned it over a lot in league play, more than anyone else.  That's mostly been balanced because they force more turnovers than anyone else.  Trine just doesn't turn the ball over so those steals probably won't be there for Hope to feast on, controlling their own turnovers will be paramount for Hope to win Wed.

Essentially they jumped over the three teams above them that lost, plus one more than won 3 games last week.

And they jumped over a team that beat them soundly.

Tough night for the Tommies; their 12th ranked women's team also lost to Concordia-Moorhead.
