Hope 97 Albion 73

VanArendonk 16, Eidson 14, Gardner 12.......0 turnovers from the PG position today.
Herron 17, Watston 11 for the Britons

Hope was pretty good today, 'shooting' the ball at 68% clip.  When Hope emphasizes getting the ball inside and its big men play aggressive they're pretty tough to contend with.

Albion looked like a team that's tired of competing and is just trying to play out the season.  They were in this one at halftime but Hope opened the lead to 17 points 5 minutes into the 2nd half and you could just see on their faces it was over.

What's left

Adrian:    OLIVET, @Alma, @Kzoo, ALBION
Albion:    TRINE, KZOO, ALMA, @Adrian
Alma:      CALVIN, ADRIAN, @Albion, @Kzoo
Calvin:    @Alma, @Hope, TRINE, OLIVET
Hope:     @Kzoo, CALVIN, OLIVET, @Trine
Kzoo:     HOPE, @Albion, ADRIAN, ALMA
Olivet:    @Adrian, TRINE, @Hope, @Calvin
Trine:     @Albion, @Olivet, @Calvin, HOPE

Highlighted Adrian and Olivet's schedule since they're the two probably battling for the 4th spot.

Trine's win today puts them in great position for no worse than the #3 spot in the MIAA Tournament.  It's just going to be really hard for Adrian to catch them, right now Trine holds the tie-breaker with Olivet's win over Adrian earlier this year. Trine can wrap up the #3 seed or better with a win at Albion.

Olivet's win doesn't eliminate Alma but realistically its over for the Scots.  Olivet still has a really tough finish so their game at Adrian becomes pretty much an elimination game for them with their finish of Trine, at Hope, at Calvin.

Adrian's schedule still gives them a shot to make the tournament but they really need to win their remaining 4 games, any loss would throw the tie-breaker into Olivet's favor.(ie Olivet over Hope)

Alma needs to beat Calvin to stay alive really.

With 4 to play, Hope is assured of a tournament spot with their win today.  Seeding for them and Trine might come down to the final day and that Olivet/Hope game might prove pivotal again.

No. 16 Christopher Newport loses to Greensboro 72-69. Presumably Calvin moves up in the next poll.

Calvin out scored Kalamazoo 40-10 over the last 15:49 of the second half.

Kalamazoo's last field goal occurred with 10:03 left in the game.  They had 2 FT's the rest of the game.

Bryan Powell is playing very well right now.  He is enjoyable to watch.  It is impressive when he dunks.  He can elevate!

Mickey De Vries got caught retaliating.  The ref always sees the second one.

Kalamazoo shot 17% on their two-point attempts for the game. Once Ghafari and Fishman stopped hitting their NBA range threes (5-8 first half, 1-6 second half), it was game over for the Hornets.

But their 3's were impressive.

No doubt Calvin's team monitors this board and they didn't wish to be accused of "scoreboard watching" the second half. ;)

The Calvin team scored big both on and off the court yesterday.  The game results have been well documented here.  The off-court story unfolded this way:

My nephew Paul, who watches many Calvin home games courtside from his motorized wheelchair, has been struggling for life and breath over the past 10 days to two weeks, hospitalized with aspiration pneumonia.  For several days, he needed support for his breathing from a respirator.  But he was weaned off the machine a few days ago and has made remarkable strides.

His trademark smile was as wide as the Knollcrest campus yesterday, when one of my buddies at the college arrived at the hospital, toting a basketball signed by the Calvin basketball team members, and sending warm wishes and prayers for a fast-break recovery  to "Calvin's #1 Fan."

Now, there's a trophy that means just as much as -- maybe more than -- a banner, or two.

Well played, Knights!
Thank you, KVS!
Bless you, Mike Van Denend!

Pretty special. A tear or two comes to the hardbitten OldKnight eye.

2013 MIAA Pick em' Champion

Tyler Kruis completed a nice week with 40 points and 20 rebounds while his team picked up a couple of W's.

Happy Calvin Guy

Regarding rankings, Calvin will definitely move up at least one spot today in the D3Hoops rankings with #16 Christopher Newport's loss.  We'll see how far #8 Wooster falls after their loss to Wabash, and it will be interesting to see how far #5 UW-Stevens Point falls after losing both games this week.  That WIAC conference schedule is a gauntlet.  I wouldn't be surprised if Calvin is ranked this week anywhere from 14-16, depending on how impressed the voters are with the 62 point scoring margin this week.  :) Notable this upcoming week: #10 Amherst will travel to #9 Williams and #6 Middlebury.

Calvin is currently #9 in D3 in the Massey Ratings.

My apologies, I nearly forgot to mention that Calvin also plays a road game this week against the preseason #7 team.

As a Hope fan, I thought the snark well done, HCG . . . the dry wit put a smile on my face.  And I hope to have a more broadly smiling face at 5 p.m. come Saturday.
