Good to see all those pre-game rim rattlers were worth it.

Yup.  So was College of Faith.

I believe there was a DI game this weekend in which a player was given a technical foul for a pregame dunk. Saw something about it on the ESPN bottom line but don't know the full details. Seems like it is one of those things that is technically against the rules but is rarely policed. And honestly, who cares?

I believe it is strongly enforced in D3 - you just have to realize that the "official" pregame period is 25 minutes prior to tipoff - aka when the officials are actually on the floor.

Congrats to Calvin Knights on a sweep of the MIAA championships this year.

They are to be commended for an outstanding game on Saturday and I wish them much success in the NCAA Tourney.

Seeing, from much of the discussion, that only one team was going to make the tournament out of the MIAA (despite how wrong that would have been if Hope got the AQ), I am happy for Calvin that they get to go.  I believe in the two games at Calvin and their play throughout the year, they showed that they are the best team in the MIAA this year.

Here is to HOPEing they get a home game for their fans.

GOOD LUCK KNIGHTS!

ps.  Can we please try to go a week without a "WIZ" smart arse comment.  They are getting old! ::) ::)

From a HOPE perspective, a tough end to an interesting year.  The cupboard is definitely not bare and next year they should again be very competitive.

Two areas that concerned me all year and really got exposed late in the year was 3 point shooting and FT shooting for the Dutchmen.

1. FT Shooting, the Dutchmen did improve on the year and finished at 70.7% as a team.  My "Mendoza" line for FT shooting has always been 75%.  Hope attempted 703 free throws this year.  Gettting to the minimum of 75% cost them 30 points.  Spend some time in the gym this off-season boys and get this between 75-80%.

2.  3-point shooting.  The bare minimum here needs to be 35%, but 40% at this level really should be attainable.  Hope shot 32.4% from 3 this year.  Also, in their last 3 games, they were 15-62 or 19.5%, including 2-24 their last 2 games.  This has to improve next season, and it needs to start with Freshman Alex Edison.  Here is breakdown of Edison:

a.  37% FG shooting for the year, 33% 3-point shooting for the year.
b.  Final four games, 8-33 FG, 19.5%, 2-17 3-pt, 10.5%, 24 total points, 6 points a game.

From a key starter, this must improve in the sophomore year.  Not sure if it was the "tired" legs (HS to college, # of games) or shot selection.  But for Hope to be successful next year, Alex needs to shot closer to 50% FG and 40% 3 point.

My two cents worth.

D3Hoops.com projected bracket has Aurora travelling to Calvin for the first round game.  I'd be pretty pleased with that draw.

If Calvin makes it to the championship game, will they play on a Sunday or will the NCAA change the date?

They will change the date.  The NCAA is very respectful of the religious beliefs, and practices of it's member insititutions.  Back in 2010 the women's volleyball championship game was moved from Sunday to Monday when Calvin advanced that far.  This rule is also uniform for D2, and D1, but has been used only a handful of times that I recall.  We had some interesting discussions on this point months ago when the tournament plans for this year were first announced.

I wonder when they would change it to.  Remember, it's not the normal title game in Salem, but part of the Final Four weekend extravaganza...I don't suppose they could move it to midday Monday the day of the D1 championship game.

Could get problematic considering the Atlanta Hawks have a game at Philips Arena at 7:30. Would probably have to be a 1 p.m. game. This issue would also come into play if Wheaton makes a run, not sure who else off the top of my head.

I am trying to recall the conclusion that was drawn on the reschedule day.  The D2 championship, and D3 are scheduled on Sunday as part of a package.  My thinking is the game goes to Monday to avoid a conflict with the semi's.  Yes it does potentially cause some problems for the NCAA, but they knew that going in.  Guess the risk of a "no play on Sunday" team qualifying was worth it to the NCAA to gamble.

I remember Ruben Riley from Creston HS, who many of you may remember played football at the University of Michigan in the mid-2000's, got T'd up in HS for dunking in warm-ups.  I remember the coach benched him the whole game, but I don't think he played much anyways.

Looking at Calvin's bracket, not thinking we need to worry about the championship game being scheduled for Sunday...

Calvin at Rose-Hulman
Northwestern (MN) at UW-Stevens Point

Aurora at St. Thomas
St. Norbert at Wheaton

KnightSlappy

So all Calvin would have to (probably) do to get to Salem, VA and the Elite Eight is win

at Rose-Hulman
at UW-Stevens Point
at St. Thomas

Pretty safe to say they didn't move up in the never-to-be-seen final regional rankings.

Based on the matchups I think it went:
1. Wooster (still)
2. Ohio Wesleyan
3. St. Vincent
4. Calvin
