Happy Calvin Guy

Rose Hulman's starting 5:
Austin Weatherford 6'2"
James Pillischafske 6'2"
Julian Strickland 6'3"
Jon Gerken 6'6"
Brenton Balsbaugh 6'6"

Calvin's starting 5:
David Rietema 6'1"
Jordan Brink 6'3"
Tom Snikkers 6'4"
Tyler Dykstra 6'8"
Tyler Kruis 6'9"

Calvin averages 1.6 inches more across the starting lineup.

From all appearances, Rose-Hulman likes to use all of the shot clock.  I estimate 57.6 possessions per game this year.  By means of comparison, Calvin is approximately 66.2 possessions/game and Adrian is at 63.7.  Rose-Hulman is like a super-Adrian in terms of playing style.

Tyler Kruis is the final MIAA player of the week. It was the first time he has received POW honors in his career. That surprised me, and I suspect it surprises others (that it was his first time, not that he won it).

I agree that Adrian is a really good comparison to Rose-Hulman.  But I would add RH is like Adrian if Adrian had Hope's offense.

I'm aware of the difficulty of the bracket and of beating St. Thomas, but why not dream? Beating St. Thomas would be sweet revenge for the National Volleyball finals match-up.

Guess you got that wish in the first round for the womens team

I am just happy that Calvin is in the tournament and not too worried about the brackets or locations.  By the time league play ends a team needs to be ready to win every game regardless of opponent.  These are arguably the 62 best teams and to win the national championship, the common goal for all of them, a team needs to be prepared to beat all of them anywhere.

Are you saying RH's offense is similar to the Hope offense we saw at Calvin twice?

No, for the season their productivity is about equal.  Adrian is well below 'good' on offense.

For a team that plays a low scoring, low possession game Rose-Hulman has an efficient offense.
For a team that plays a low scoring, low possession game Adrian does not have an efficient offense.

Comparative scores with common opponents shows RH had similar score lines to Calvin.

Maybe another comparison might be mid 2000's Albion squads?

At least Calvin outdraws them in the attendance stats.  Looking forward to some Terre Haute cuisine this weekend.

SB Nation did a pretty exhaustive piece on Indianapolis cuisine before the 2012 Super Bowl down there.  This way you can prepare for the miracles to come from our friends to the south!

Calvin to St. Thomas is a flight, so you've got that going for you.  Lot's of daily non-stops to the twin cities out of Ford.

I believe flights are over 500 miles and the NCAA said no flights in the first three rounds of D3 this year.  You might have to meet on a neutral floor.

When did the NCAA ever say that?

As always, they wish to minimize flights, but some are inevitable and will be done.

Pat Coleman

I keep seeing this rumor around but it isn't true. Clearly, from the brackets, it's not true.

Per flights - might want to check the bracket... pretty clearly there in the first round :)

As for the Sunday game... the NCAA has already announced that if a team has a conflict for a Sunday game, they will move it to Monday. That being said, teams like Messiah in recent years have stated that if their tournament games - more particularly a championship game - is played on a Sunday, they will play the game as scheduled (I think both soccer championship games for Messiah were played on Sunday if my memory serves). I am not sure of Calvin's situation in this particular scenario, but I know Messiah is not the only institution to state this for championship games. (I would venture a guess Wheaton (Ill.) has said it - but I am tired and I could be making that up in my head). Anyway... if there is a conflict the game will be played at NOON on Monday at the Phillips Arena - thus why Pat, Gordon and I have made sure to book out flights and hotels through Tuesday morning :).

Dave, not positive, but pretty sure that Hope (not relevant for the men's this year, alas), Calvin, and Wheaton are all non-negotiable on no Sundays.

But I could be wrong - it happens! :P

(I'd be shocked [though pleased] if either Calvin or Wheaton made it to Atlanta, so probably a moot point.)
