Calvin's players and KVS have to be commended for the season they had.  The team played to its potential.  I think that is all you can ask.  All year long KVS talked about being mentally tough enough.  Last night in the second half that wasn't a question anymore.  A team needs it's seniors to  have their best years.  Rietema, Powell, Snikkers, and De Boer all did that.

After watching 2 former MIAA refs do the Big Ten Tournament this weekend I now completely understand what I've been watching for the last 20 years of my basketball watching life.

sac, my friend:

Just curious, but not sure I understand which way you mean that - good or bad? ??? :)  I hope they weren't the one's calling the Michigan State/Ohio State game yesterday because that crew did a terrible job.  You know I am not a Michigan State fan (nor Ohio State either), however, I was not impressed - the ref crew for that game regularly missed blatent calls that should have been made, which was surprising.

I meant exactly what I said. ;)

So what happened to Rietema - I see people posting about a broken arm - when/how did that happen?

I believe it happened in the Stevens Point game.  He went down hard on a drive to the basket in that game.  He was opening and closing his hand repeatedly and was grimacing after that play.  This is purely speculation on my part.

Wowwie, incredible game tonight. Possibly the best I have seen at any level and I am really proud of what the guys did this season.

I think Calvin may have been the best team in the great lakes region this year.  ::)
I definitely agree and many other people would agree if Calvin would have won or blew out this game.

My understanding is that Rietema suffered a broken wrist in the UW-SP game, but that the team didn't want to talk about it publicly during the week in order to prevent UST from having any game-planning advantage from that knowledge.  They even planned that he would come out for warmups without any visual indication of the injury.  I'm sure St Thomas was as surprised as the rest of us when Ryan Nadeau entered the game 4 minutes into the contest.  That he played 17 minutes with this injury is a testament to David's guts and courage.  As usual, his box score line wasn't full of gaudy numbers, but it's only fitting that he tracked down the defensive rebound in the final seconds to give the Knights a shot at winning the game.

Is this announcer trying to be Gus Johnson?  Or is he a former wrestling announcer?  Either way, I do prefer him over announcers who are too droll (or Dan Dokich).

I listened to the UST announcing team so that it synched with the video.  In my point of view, they did an excellent job.  They were informed, fun to listen to, and very complimentary of the Knights (borderline man-crush on Bryan Powell).  Only blip is that they turned "Kruis" into a two-syllable word.

FYI:

The following article, which discusses the NCAA RPI method of ranking teams, is a year old -- apologies if it was discussed here last March or so out of date that it's irrelevant on the DIII boards now (or maybe ever as it's talking about Division I, but I think much of the criticism also applies to DIII). This line from the article caught my attention: "Over the long run, R.P.I. has predicted the outcome of N.C.A.A. games more poorly than almost any other system. And it shows some especially implausible results this season...."

Tom Snikkers named to the 2nd team NABC Great Lakes All Region team.  Trine's Ian Jackson a first team selection.  KVS co-coach  of the year in the Great Lakes region.  http://static.psbin.com/z/e/dtmf3oj4do2ttt/2013_NABC_Division_III_All-District_Teams_and_Coaches.pdf

Hearing that Hope, Trine, and Calvin are all after Keith Brushwyler, a 6'6" forward from Stevensville Lakeshore who would be a nice get for any of these MIAA teams--really nice player and a tremendous student.  His frontcourt mate, 6'8" Michael Welch, is also being recruited by Calvin.

Don't you just love it when announcers who probably haven't heard of Russ' try to pronounce extremely dutch names such as Huizenga, Kruis, Dykstra, Devries and Vallie. (little red squiggly line under all except Vallie)

Some good news if you're a Calvin fan.  I heard from a reliable source recently that Calvin Christian's Brad Visser is strongly considering Calvin College as a school to play collegiate basketball at.  I heard it is down between Calvin, GVSU, and Wayne St.  That would be a big get for Calvin if he is to go there.  I think he could make an immediate impact next season and help fill the void of some of the guards Calvin are losing to graduation, and be a legit pure scorer at this level.  We shall see, though.
