I enjoyed reading the summaries of Hope's previous eleven Presidents and found the one for Ame Vennema, Hope's fourth president (1911-1918), to be most interesting:

He inherits a policy that bans the ever-more-popular athletic teams from traveling during school terms, and with faculty support suspends the men's basketball team for violating the rule in 1913. The students react by striking, a shocking move for the day. (The travel restrictions are eventually eased during his tenure.)

Would have made any future Hope hardcourt success difficult to come by if this attitude had continued.

Not sure if this topic was discussed, disputed or ignored but I finally saw the "Hail Mary" play from Hudsonville's recent miracle comeback.  A couple items:
1.  Was this play set-up after a score?  If no, then he shouldn't have been able to take multiple steps...

Brent Hibbitts' thrown-in occurred after a made basket by FHN and thus his running the baseline was legal.

Its one of the most misunderstood rules of basketball apparently
http://web.chapman.edu/asbe/faculty/bdehning/Personal/laderabasketball/Misunderstood%20Rules.htm

9 A player inbounding the ball may step on, but not over the line. During a designated spot throwin, the player inbounding the ball must keep one foot on or over the three-foot wide designated spot. An inbounding player is allowed to jump or move one or both feet. A player inbounding the ball may move backward as far as the five-second time limit or space allows. If player moves outside the three-foot wide designated spot it is a violation, not travelling. In gymnasiums with limited space outside the sidelines and endlines, a defensive player may be asked to step back no more than three feet. A player inbounding the ball may bounce the ball on the out-of-bounds area prior to making a throwin.

So do I understand this correctly, that on a dead ball (not a made basket), the player inbounding the ball can shuffle his feet all he wants as longs as he stays within the three-foot wide designated spot?  If so, I learned something new today.

Holland will be the farthest he's ever lived from Waffle House.

There is a Waffle House in Holland, OH. And Russ' is sort of like a Waffle House for Dutch people.

Maybe this will inspire Waffle House to open a franchise in West Michigan. I can dream...

Both Calvin and Hope have new presidents who are ordained Presbyterian Church USA elders.
Coincidence or part of the Master Plan?

Here is a passage from scripture I thought of when you made that post:
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

I have many friends and (gasp) family members who are connected to Hope College.  Both colleges appear to have exemplary new presidents to lead each of those terrific institutions in the years ahead.  I wish only the best for Hope's future.  It's Holy Week, so I'm particularly mindful of the many things that Calvin and Hope grads hold in common. I may not remember any of this when next the two rivals face off on the athletic fields/courts.  Hey, we're all day-to-day, after all.

PCUSA is part of the "reformed" tradition which includes not only RCA and CRC but also Lutherans and the UCC.  There is a wide range of theological diversity in the PCUSA and the two new presidents represent the more conservative side of the denomination and should fit in well with the conservative ethos of Hope and Calvin.
