Mr. Ypsi

YES!!  Michigan downs Kansas 87-85 in OT!  Big 10 has 2 teams in the final eight - go MSU! :)  Three is even better than two!

Mitch McGary has such ridiculous stats in the tourney (25 and 14 tonight), that I fear he may be seduced into one and done.  I certainly hope he will return, but if someone is so enamored that he gets high first round money, who could fault him for turning pro?  But, geez, he's now started 3(?) games in his career!

1. Hope has posted a job of sports information director on their website. This makes me wonder how much more of the great Tom Renner we will now be seeing.

2. Does anyone know how much if any MIAA interest there is in the little black point guard from Big Rapids? He knocked our local high school out in regionals this year and our veteran, very talented backcourt was given fits.

3. Alma 6-5 G/F Kyle Slagell seems to be narrowing his schools list to Calvin and Spring Arbor, although he was at Alma last week so they're still in the picture. I can't see Slagell as a huge impact freshman, but he will be a big contributer in the MIAA.

If so, this is a terrific pickup for the Flying Dutchmen. Not surprised that Brushwyler would head to Holland but thought Calvin might have the inside track on Welch.

Not 100% obviously, given this isn't LOI territory, but from quite close source yesterday at camp, that's how it's looking.

I have to give Sbell a shout-out for calling Michigan's pick-up of Spike Albrecht a great one last spring.

Please feel free to do a little research so you can refer to this player by name.  He's an individual with a name, not just a talented commodity identifiable only by the noteworthiness of his race in some west Michigan circles.  I'm sure you meant no harm, but am I the only one who feels a bit uncomfortable about how this comment comes off, emanating from mostly-white MIAA-land?

On another note, thanks to everyone for the informed comments about recruiting season--much appreciated.

A good weekend for us Michigan fans. In addition to the obvious highlights, I was particularly impressed by two things:

  • As soon as Burke hit his tying jumper, the Michigan players immediately went into their defense and didn't start celebrating until the time-out was called. That takes some real discipline to do that.
  • At halftime of the Florida game, Beilein was asked by the sideline reporter how Michigan had slipped from a 24 point lead to a 17 point halftime lead. I was impressed with Beilein's answer which was something to the effect of "Nothing happened. Florida's a good team. We're not 24 points a half better than they are. We have to feel positive about being up 17." Good answer.

No doubt they get their composure from their coach

Dario Williams is his name.

I apologize if I offended anyone. I guess I didn't realize that a northern state with schools based around larger and more diverse areas like Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Detroit would be offended by referring to a kid as black. Don't really see how that is offensive as I said nothing stereotypical whatsoever but I guess some people aren't raised the same way.

Don't say I'm being insensitive either as I'm bi-racial myself and have often heard the backend of racial comments (chink, zipperhead, squinty, etc.) I truly did not realize that that would offend anyone.

But anyway. His name is Dario Williams I believe. Sorry again.

I honestly have never heard the term "zipperhead."  Anyway, lets get back to basketball.  Is Dario coming to Calvin?

Google it....

A little tidbit as I work through reviewing the MIAA......

Olivet returns no one over 6-2 who played a significant part in 2012-13.    I saw this same thing last spring with Muskingum.  They went 1-24 this year with their lone win coming against losers of 51 straight Franciscan.

Not predicting doom for Olivet, but it is interesting.
