I'd assume Visser will be preferred walk-on, since someone from CMU tipped me off on it. If he were just going to walk on, they wouldn't care enough to put it out there.
He was given preferred walk-on status

Even as a preferred walk-on status, unless he blows the doors off, he'll get little to no time his first 2-2 1/2 years. I had friends I knew from high school play at 3 mid majors as "preferred walk ons", none of them got even decent time until halfway through their junior year because of being behind scholarship players. While I realize that this might not be the case for Visser, I think kids today get too hung up on the whole "play at a D1 school" deal. Why play somewhere with a crap program, a mediocre at best academic setting, and you're still going to pay to play? The only reason kids spurn good D3 schools and potentially D2 offers is usually because they are stuck on the D1 label. Life goes on after basketball, why not have fun, win some games and potentially be a great player somewhere while getting a good education? Even being a fan of the Knights, he turned down how many other quality institutions to MAYBE one day get 10 minutes a game for a team that has no chance of sniffing the NCAA's let alone being in contention for their conference championship. Just gotta shake your head sometimes.

Big difference in tuition as well.  Not an insignificant factor these days as Hope and Calvin creep up on $40,000.

As a preferred walk-on he's essentially getting a tryout to earn a potential scholarship down the road.

She didn't tell me that the part would make her a bigamist! :o Either that, or I get served with divorce papers while attending the Friday evening performance.

Judging from the distances he fired up shots, the NCAA 3 point line's extra foot won't be an issue for this kid. Also, Calvin has another QB for its (still) undefeated football team.

How big of an issue is the tuition for Visser? (I honestly have no idea so that's not to push any buttons, just to inquire) And if he's a decent/good student, he'd have a shot at getting scholarships/financial aid.

When it comes to gaining a scholarship at CMU, most players that do well as preferred walk ons at D1 schools at least have gotten an offer or two from even low level D1's and from what I've heard, that wasn't the case with Visser. Maybe he'll be a Jalen Bouma for Calvin baseball or an NVA for Hope, get sick of riding the pine and realize you might as well win and enjoy the game rather than ride the bench and lose games

Josh Groenhof (Zeeland East) has announced that he will be wearing orange and blue next year. Go Hope!

Did that video remind you of a Calvin guard from the late 60's 70 time period?
Granted that was long before the 3 point shot, but the guy I'm thinking of would fire anytime he cleared the center line.  Also had a very quick release.

To bad.  You missed watching some great bball players.  You would be more familiar with this individual from his days as a very good h.s. coach.  He was really fun to watch, and is #9 on Calvin's point scoring list.

I'm sure.  I go back to the mid 80's.

Not to be picayune, but neither school is coming close to those numbers as regards tuition costs. They would be creeping toward $40,000 if you include room and board, but my guess is he would have to pay a similar charge for room and board at CMU. For tuition, both Hope and Calvin are under $30,000. If you compare that with other schools similarly ranked in the highly flawed USNews rankings, you will find that both Hope and Calvin are far less expensive than similarly positioned peers, not making adjustments for institutional discount rates.
