Alma roster (which requires no math)

http://goalmascots.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/roster

"No real surprises in the preseason poll in my mind," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "I think third through eighth place is really up for grabs. Albion finished eighth last season and were probably four to five plays away from being fourth.

"I think the teams that finished third through eighth last year will all be better or the same. Calvin and Hope might not be quite as dominant but is still above everyone else. It will be a very competitive league."

Sharpshooting Sam is developing a robust Rockford pipeline, with four Rams in his fold this year -- three of them freshman.

After being dormant for a good part of the off-season the HollandKnight is back!!! And with me I have a roster...

http://www.calvin.edu/sports/mens/basketball/roster.htm

They have 5 new faces, either transfers or freshman, that join the varsity squad. That makes things interesting for Coach KVS as he will try to maneuver the loss of 2 very good guards in Bryan Powell and Dave Rietema and also a player who seemed irreplaceable at times, Tom Snikkers.
The Calvin basketball team has 3 new guards which include,
Kyle Macdonald- a transferred junior who is a native of Hillsdale, Michigan and transfers from Jackson College, a junior college in Jackson, MI
Brad Visser- a freshman out of Calvin Christian Highschool who was scouted by teams at the DII level and even commited to CMU before transferring out
Danny Leach-a freshman who comes from Timothy Christian in Elmhurst, IL
Calvin's 2 new forwards who include
Bj Van Loo- a sophomore forward who played at Hudsonville High before he wnet to Grace Bible College then transferred
Michael Welch- A freshman who is a forward but can play a little center too. He is from Stevensville-Lakeshore.

If they can overcome lack of experience they will have a pretty good season.

Calvin has a men's basketball preview posted. Included is an audio interview with KVS.

http://www.calvin.edu/sports/news/comments/2013-14-calvin-mens-basketball-preview/

Interesting points:

  • Jordan Mast is expected to play a bigger role
  • Kruis and Stout will probably see some time on the floor together
  • Jordan Daley had "multiple" Division II scholarship offers, "will expect a lot from him".
  • "hoping Austin Parks can help out at the point, don't yet know what that role will be"
  • Kyle MacDonald is a true point guard
  • both MacDonald and BJ Van Loo are expected to contribute early on
  • Probably going to see a lot from Brad Visser - caveat: learning curve
  • Rotation will probably change a lot as the season goes on

I just noticed our friends from Finlandia open their season at Grinnell on Nov. 15.

What may be even more interesting is when our friends from the College of Faith travel to Grinnell in early January.

I like those points you made. Mast played a large roll in 2011-2012 due to injury and was solid. Daley was good in jayvee but tended to take to take too many ill advised shots. Parks played mop-up duty last year in the blow out games he showed some good ball-handling and defense. I thought some of the new guys are good enough to have an impact early. That last point you made is the only one I question. Last year Coach KVS changed his starters twice and that was when Brink was injured, but it may change with another strong bench that Calvin has. Calvin also has a lot of height on there team and if the play 6'10 Kruis at 5, 6'9 Stout at 4, 6'6 Van Loo or Mast at 3, the 2 guard would be Brink and the point might be Visser, Parks or MacDonald. They have good length.

Welcome back to the board, HollandKnight.  It may be a bit of a cliche', but may I say that it's never too early to look forward to the post of the year 2014. :D

The only thing worth watching in that game. Ugh.

It'd be nice if that led to an uptick in recruiting for the Orange and Blue...

Wow! Didn't see that reverse coming as MSU was trying to run out the clock. Neither did the U of M defense.

Your Adrian Bulldogs
http://www.adrianbulldogs.com/sports/m-baskbl/2013-14/roster

The most obvious missing Bulldog in Adam Meier, you might remember he suffered a knee injury late last season.  This means Adrian loses 3 starters and two of their top 3 rebounders from a year ago.

I do not believe any of the guys who went missing at the end of December last year returned this year, including PG Daryl Fleimeister who I think would have made a big difference for them last year.

Transfers IN
Jeffrey Robertson--Defiance
Daniel Price--Wayne Community College
Charles Hayden--Aquinas

Monday night Adrian travels up to Saginaw Valley State for an exhibition game.

Adrian's roster is certainly tipped toward the backcourt, with three forwards and ELEVEN guards.  They might be chucking up a few 3-balls this year.

Certainly looks like they'll be playing small ball. 5 of those guards are under 6ft, and the 3 forwards are 6-3, 6-4, and 6-5. Two of the guards are also 6-4. I don't doubt that they will still be a tough defensive team, and probably quicker than any other MIAA team. Be interesting to see how they do with rebounding - as a team the last few years I've always thought they worked harder at it than anyone, and with that size disadvantage they will have to do so again.
