No, Grant didn't score or get an assist in the MIAA tournament championship, but he did gut out a great performance and converted his PK in the shootout. Hopefully it will be a while before he can join the bball team due to his commitment with soccer.

His many assists throughout the soccer seasons did come from his long throw in as displayed in the Hope v Calvin bball game last year.

Agreed.

Calvin men's varsity basketball will play the alumni tonight (11/13) at Calvin (the old field house; not VA Arena).  An inside source reports that the the intent of this game is to be more on the 'serious' side of things, not just a 'fun' game. Sorry... I should have posted this earlier....

Also forgot to include the start time: pretty sure it's 7:30 PM.

Of particular interest to me was the Jordan Daley started for the non-degree-holding squad. Off the bench (in order) were:

Stout
Mast
MacDonald
VanLoo
Huizenga
Parks
Visser (2nd period)

No score was displayed on the scoreboard, but my perception was that the Alums won the first period (in particular with a quick start) and the second period was played more evenly. I believe score was kept, so maybe we'll get an actual report from someone in the know.

Alumns were (probably forgetting a few): Aaron Winkle, John Mantel, Jon Potvin, Jeremy Veenstra, Bear DeVries, Chris Prins, Kevin Prins, Bryan Powell, Brad Schnyders, Brad Sall, Matt DeBoer, Kevin Broene, Brian Haverdink, one of the Krosschells, Tyler Zoerhof, and a couple I couldn't name.

The word going around was that the Alumni beat the Varsity by 1 point on a buzzer-beating bucket at the end of 3 periods.  Ironically, no one playing or watching knew at the time what the score was other than the student scorekeepers.  I was told the Alumni were up 3 after the 2nd period as well.  I'm not sure what the relative scores were after the first period, but in my estimation the Alumni won the first period easily and the Varsity won the 2nd and 3rd periods (perhaps due to fatigue ;D).  I don't know why they weren't utilizing the score function on the scoreboard as the game clock, shot clock, and team fouls were all being shown.

I also saw Rob Dykstra, Josh Tubergen and Nate Burgess on the floor for the old guys.

Hope played basketball, still had more rushing yards than Michigan.

I'm pretty happy and actually a little excited about the hand check emphasis.  So far the game looks cleaner with more space and unrestricted movement.  I think the result will be higher scoring and overall better play.

I had this one or Mt. Union pegged as Adrian's toughest non-conference opponent so.......yeah.  Offense, still a challenge maybe.

Terrific recap, Sac.  Faithful to what I witnessed, and perceptive.

Those new hand check fouls in the lane seemed to have both team's starting centers bewildered at times.  But Ben Gardner won't mind the new foul rule, which both opens things up for him and will bring him to the free throw line more.  What a gutsy player he is (on the floor a lot after driving to the basket--I hope he can stay healthy).

And, yes, before long here in west Michigan Todd is going to be known as Harrison's father, rather than Harrison being known as Todd's son.   :)

Condolences to sac for the hurt put on his high school alma mater by No. 1 ranked DeWitt. Still, a pretty nice football season by the Greyhounds.

sac

They played their tails off twice as major underdogs on the road and just simply made magic happen in ways you would not believe.  They just ran into a buzz saw tonight.

With Olivet graduate Mike Smith (former coach at Holt) at the helm, I have little doubt this won't be the last time the Greyhounds are in playoffs.  In 11 months he erased the last 20 years of misery, and a 9 year stretch where Eaton Rapids won 7 football games.   http://michigan-football.com/f/eatonrpd.htm

Pretty rough night for the league

John Carroll, Ohio 69, Adrian 55
Allegheny, Pa. 77, Alma 67
Wis.-La Crosse 94, Olivet 59
Albion 81  College of Faith 71

Alma let a lead get away from them in the 2nd half.

I'm sure that College of Faith score will get an extra look or two considering what Hope did to them last year.  But the CofF is far different program than a year ago with none of last years players returning and 10 of 12 guys on this years roster having transferred in from other colleges or JUCO's.  They already recorded their first win last week at Grace Bible's tournament.

MIAA in Exile

Albion records a win over dII Northern Michigan 83-76.  Lead was 7-10 the last 10 minutes.  Great start for Brits.
