Swept in Allegheny.  I hope Allegheny is improved, otherwise those are pretty bad losses.

Platteville 56  Olivet 45

2-6 start to the year, I was counting on a couple more wins.

I just noticed our friends from Finlandia open their season at Grinnell on Nov. 15.

What may be even more interesting is when our friends from the College of Faith travel to Grinnell in early January.

Saturday morning, ESPN radio announced the score to the Finlandia/Grinnell game with a lead that went something close to, "Remember when that guy from Grinnell scored 11-billion points in a game last year..."  I immediately thought it was the CoF game and they tried their "have 1 guy score all the points routine" again.  Thankfully, it was Finlandia and he ONLY scored 70 points.

Grinnell will try it again when they play CoF, won't they?  It just makes me shake my head...

The game featured 65 fouls called, 94 free throws, and 55 turnovers.  I bet it was fun to watch.

This is one of those occasions when I wish that basketball box scores indicated the duration of a game, the way that baseball box scores do.

North Central's women's team plays Grinnell offense, which enabled the Hope women's record 126 points last evening.  In North Central's Friday night 113 to 111 overtime victory over Ripon, there were 73 fouls and 93 free throw attempts.  In the Hope game, there was a combined 83 turnovers (that was not a typo), of which 51 were by North Central.

FWIW, the NCAC coaches picked Allegheny 9th of 10 teams, ahead of only Oberlin in the preseason poll.

Probably about as expected.  The Comets shot 8.3% without a 2-point basket in a miserable first half.

Calvin's opening game opponent, the Anderson Ravens, are 0-2 on the young season, dropping both games of a tournament in Cleveland against Case Western Reserve and Otterbein.  The Ravens' second-year coach, Owen Handy, is a West Michigan native and the grandson of former Herman Miller CEO Max DePree.  Handy went to Wheaton College and served on the coaching staff there before taking the post in Indiana.

It will be interesting to see who KVS anoints as his starting point guard tonight.  In any event, Calvin will enjoy a decided size advantage against Anderson.  The Knights should own the boards.  Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. and it's not yet clear on either the Anderson.edu website or the MIAA.org site as to whether there will be a video feed.

Here's to a good(opening)knight!!!  And cheers to the beginning of another enjoyable season of MIAA hoops.

WFUR will be covering the game; don't know if Doug retired or not. Hasn't he been talking about doing so for a year or more?

The Anderson College web site reports that they will provide both live stats AND a "Stretch Internet" broadcast for the Calvin game tonight (http://athletics.anderson.edu/news/2013/8/30/GEN_0830135233.aspx?path=general). The "StretchInternet Broadcast" site includes the possibility of a video feed, but as mentioned in an earlier post, it's not clear if that necessarily means it will be a video feed tonight. (I suspect there will be an 'on demand' (ie pay option) for video as it looks like this is what Anderson did last year -- many of last year's games are listed in the 'On Demand' schedule).

On another (off-topic) note, the Calvin-Hope women game will play tonight at VanNoord. Listening to the men's game on the radio while watching the women's game might be a better option than struggling with video feed issues that typically accompany many of the video broadcasts I've attempted to watch in the past.

Doug Wentworth did the Ferris State game.  I am guessing he will do all the home games and selected away games.

Not sure if there is a standard on this, but it seems if the term live video stream is used you see the action live, but without announcers.  If the term video broadcast is used it typically means you get the video with announcers, but on a 5 second delay.
Calvin uses live stream video.  WFUR radio has to use the 5 second delay.  Hope/Calvin rivalry games use the TV feed, with announcers, and is termed a broadcast.
NCAA games on Internet are broadcasts as they have announcer.
I know it can get confusing especially if you also window in livestats.  It cracks me up when a person is at the f.t. line on the video broadcast, and live stats shows the score going up by one before the player even gets the ball from the ref.

From last winter on Doug Wentworth

Now, after a half century of calling high school basketball games, and 47 covering Calvin College basketball, Wentworth, 76, is hanging up his microphone.

He's a very nice man, but this is one of those unfortunate instances in which one is tempted to say about his work, "He is forgotten, but not gone."

Not sure what is going on with Anderson's live stats but Calvin leads at the half, 36-20.
