I feel a little guilty that I completely forgot about the Hornet game until it was almost halftime.  I was hoping that not seeing Mark Ghafari in the line-up was a live stats error, but I figured that happens less at the D1 level than it does at D3.  The recap on K's website mentions that he did not play, but does not give a reason.  Here's hoping he is okay by Wednesday night!

The good news from the game was to see Adam Dykema score so well in his first major action of the season.  K had four freshmen play double-figure minutes.  Another bonus is they are listed at 6'3, 6'5, 6'6, and 6'8.  Not quite as big as some teams in the league, but the size should help with match-ups as the season moves along.

Mr. Dykema can score.  He will remind Calvin fans of Mr. Powell--when he's "on" he is instant offense, when he is off he will leave fans scratching their heads about shot selection.  Defensively, well...he will also remind folks of Mr. Powell.  I don't know much about the Hornets guards, but I will not be surprised if his PT goes up--he can certainly provide some offensive firepower off the bench.

And after a thorough statistical analysis of MIAA roster listings compared with actual player measurables that I've been able to obtain to date from healthcare.gov, my preliminary research shows that "program" height and weight listings are inflated by an average of 1.3946 inches and 9.8432 pounds...

One day preparation for Hope/Calvin on Saturday.

Probably less of an issue since they are just starting league play. Hope has played 5 sets of 2 games in 2 days and they aren't in the Wed - Sat mode yet.

I suspect preparation for this game has been going on for quite some time.

You beat me to it.  Both Hope and Calvin probably prepare for each other on a daily basis from the moment camp opens!

There may be partisans of other rivalries who would dispute it, but I think, with the possible exception of the Monon Bell game in football, that this is THE rivalry in any sport in D3.

That's some impressive and interesting analysis.  I've never understood why teams would inflate roster heights and weights.  I think I would rather list everyone shorter and then show up with a bigger team.   Did you find one team that was especially at fault or did they all seem to be guilty?

New Top 25 is posted on d3hoops and Calvin drops out. Massey Ratings for games through January 5 games rates Hope ahead of Calvin with Hope at 54 and Calvin at 63. I imagine Hope's no. 1 ranking for strength of schedule is the reason (Calvin's SOS is 169).

No Stuckey for CoF. He probably isn't particularly suited for that style of play anyway.

Longtime Publicist Renner To Continue Serving MIAA As Historian

Tom Renner, longtime publicist for the MIAA and retired associate vice president for public and community relations at Hope College, has agreed to continue serving the MIAA as the conference's historian, Commissioner David Neilson announced Tuesday.

Renner, whose retirement from the college took effect at the end of last year, served as the MIAA publicist from 1967 until 2008, at which time he took on the role of historian for the conference. He will expand that role in his retirement.

Under Renner's leadership, the MIAA became one of the first collegiate athletic conferences in the country to establish its own website to disseminate scores, schedules and conference news in the mid-1990s.

Renner began Hope's sports information program in 1967 and served as sports information director for the college until last summer. The MIAA in 2008 established an award honoring outstanding student workers in sports information offices, establishing the Renner Associate SID Award.

Renner's many honors for his work include publication awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognition for service from both CoSIDA and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.

Great moment for Austin Hatch the Michigan recruit who survived a plane crash

Actually, he has survived 2 plane crashes.  Great moment!  Going to be a very emotional day when he steps on the court in Ann Arbor.
