The post game interview with MN went like this:   "I think I could have done a better job preparing us. I give Albion a lot of credit, they came out and got right after us", said head coach Matt Neil.  "They were the aggressors, we were not, ....".
Now, I understand some of the fans want him fired and they are beginning to ask how many games Van Wieren lost to Albion.  Oh my!

Hope lost by 18 with a score of 65 to 47.  Most amazing is the fact that Eidson did not score a point.  As the earlier comment indicated, the Hope shooting percentage was way down in the 30 per cent range and Albion hit 50% even on three point shots.  You never know how things will turn out!

It looks like Neil and Benson were the only Hope players with above average games.

Tough night for #21 ranked orange and blue after suffering a loss to Carthage.  Thunder did not score a FG  in last 7 minutes, 32 seconds.

Calvin won comfortably over a game but overmatched Adrian quintet, as the Knights asserted their size advantage to great effect. Other than a backdoor layup by Wes Reed on the Bulldogs' first possession, I can't remember an Adrian shot within 12 feet of the basket that wasn't hotly contested. The box score shows 7 blocked shots by Calvin which is ridiculous. The true number must be twice that. Jordan Brink (13 points) showed his composed, veteran leadership and Tyler Kruis (17 points) returned to form. In an interesting aside in the postgame, KVS mentioned that he watched the video of the Hope loss and was amazed to learn that the Knights missed 20 shots taken right at the basket on Saturday. He added, "I don't expect to see that again." We didn't tonight.

His count and my count don't agree.

Not even that close.  Albion beat Hope in every way possible tonight.  If Albion played defense in every game like they did tonight they aren't 8-6 lamenting losing 6 close games.

Britons took the game right at Hope from the start grabbed a 9 point lead, after Hope settled and got it back to leading by 1 Albion outscored Hope 12-2 over 3 minutes.  It was really over when out of halftime needing  a good 5 minute start Albion outscored Hope 8-2 and 3 minutes into the second half it was 19 points and never got much closer.   Offensively Hope never really got going and Albion was 100% responsible for that, and even when Hope did get a rare open look they missed it.

Dakotah Kazen started his first game and the first time Albion has started a different 5 this year, bold move, and it payed off and he calmly stroked 5 3's.

Hope ended up winning the rebound battle but only because it was 6-1 in the last 2 minutes.   When it mattered Albion was way ahead.  They sure are something on the boards.

That supposed gap between Hope/Calvin and everyone else is really narrow this year.  Don't bring your best game and you get beat.

Dakotah Kazen came into that game 8-25 on the year from beyond the arc......went 5-7.

Albion's first win over Hope at Kresge since May's first season in 2009.

HOPE vs ALBION
You have a team coming of a big rivalry win and the other team coming off a game they felt they should of won.  Many times this just doesn't mix.  This was a tough situation for the Hope coaching staff.  You can not blame the coaching staff for this loss.  I am sure they did everything in their power to try and get the kids off the Calvin game.  Kids didn't respond.

Like Sac said Albion was much more aggressive than Hope defensively and on the boards.  Rebounds were about even, turnovers just about even, but the difference was in the shooting percentages.  I was always a firm believer shooting percentages correlate to the defense played.

If there is a lesson to learn tonight, you are going to have to play every night in the MIAA this year.  No nights off!

Appreciate, as always, your synopses, Sac.  Just curious:  Did Albion play much zone?

sac

good morning!

No Albion was straight up man for man but would frequently double in spots.

Hope actually broke out the zone for parts of the second half with mild success and mostly because nothing else worked.

Spot on IMHO.  This young team that grew and learned so much from a tough pre-conf schedule, somehow thought they had "made it" with a 5 game win streak and a big win on Calvin's floor.  Huge, HUGE Calvin win hangover.

21-point swing in three point percentage with respect to the Calvin game. Maybe the entire explanation is that sometimes shots go in and sometimes they don't.

The difference was quality of shot, Albion actually defended their guys.
