I didn't see Hope's game last night against Albion so I can't judge the quality of the Brits defense, but I did see the Flying Dutchmen play both IWU and Calvin. Eidson went 0-5 from the arc against the Titans and 6-7 against the Knights. There was no difference in the quality of shots he took in those games. KS is correct. Sometimes shots go in and sometimes they don't.

HOPE vs ALBION
You have a team coming of a big rivalry win and the other team coming off a game they felt they should of won.  Many times this just doesn't mix.  This was a tough situation for the Hope coaching staff.  You can not blame the coaching staff for this loss.  I am sure they did everything in their power to try and get the kids off the Calvin game.  Kids didn't respond.

Like Sac said Albion was much more aggressive than Hope defensively and on the boards.  Rebounds were about even, turnovers just about even, but the difference was in the shooting percentages.  I was always a firm believer shooting percentages correlate to the defense played.

If there is a lesson to learn tonight, you are going to have to play every night in the MIAA this year.  No nights off!

Spot on IMHO.  This young team that grew and learned so much from a tough pre-conf schedule, somehow thought they had "made it" with a 5 game win streak and a big win on Calvin's floor.  Huge, HUGE Calvin win hangover.

21-point swing in three point percentage with respect to the Calvin game. Maybe the entire explanation is that sometimes shots go in and sometimes they don't.

The difference was quality of shot, Albion actually defended their guys.

OK so a 17-point swing, adjusting for quality of shot.

Great win for Albion last night. Tremendous effort on defense.

This is a different Albion team from the one you saw last year, although the personnel is mostly the same. Last year's freshmen and sophomores are a year older, smarter, stronger and overall just better. Jordan Herron and Lawrence Ridgell are among the top players in the MIAA. Carter Elliott and Dakota Kazen have improved tremendously.

The Britons are more fundamentally sound this year. They get position on defensive rebounds, scrap hard and never seem to give up on loose balls. There are fewer unforced errors on offense. Sometimes an undersized team that emphasizes rebounding tends to give up something outside on defense. Not last night. The Brits played tough inside and managed to get out on the shooters as well. That was a big reason for Hope's poor shooting percentage.

No doubt Alex was red hot against Calvin, but I have to disagree.  He had one or two open looks against IWU, but the rest were well defended in my opinion.

Despite the disappointment of last nights game, I want to share the following.  Hope Coach Matt Neil has now been the head coach at Hope for 100 games, a distinction held by a total of 5 men.  Digging into my stats, I pulled out their records 100 games into their careers for us to compare (knowing a straight-up comparison isn't necessarily valid given talent levels, etc.)

So here is what I found.  Congratulations to Coach Neil, and here's HOPEing the next 100 are just as good.

Coach     First Season   Total W-L   Total %     Calvin W-L
Jack Schouten      1916-1917   59-41   0.590      4-0

Olivet at Hope

Comets do two things pretty well, cause turnovers and shoot a lot of threes.  The personnel is different from a year ago but they will still try to drive the lane and kick the ball out for the open 3.  I can't recall if they trap at the half-court line but it seems like they like to gamble and go for steals.  They played several different defenses against BW, including something that looked like Michigan's 1-3-1.  Olivet will probably have no trouble playing some zone today.

Defensively they've given up 80+ points in 10 of 13 games and are near the bottom of D3 in FG% allowed.  They will want the game at a higher pace and take their chances they can out score you.

I really think Olivet is a little quicker this year, it was hard to tell against Baldwin-Wallace but it sure seemed that way.  At one point Olivet had BW down 12, you can't screw around with this team despite their poor record.

G  Jordan Union 6-0  Jr.
G  Blake Krum  6-2  Jr.
G  Kevin Woodson  6-4  Fr.
F  T. J.  Vondette  6-2   So.
C  Adam Raynor  7-0  Fr.
-----------------------------------
F  Alex Mayo  6-1  Jr.
G  Eddie Rogers  6-1 So.
C  R.J. Haas  6-6 Fr.

These are the 8 guys Coach Coles has played the most in league play.  Olivet had a little more depth when I saw them in early December  6-7  Fr.  Riley Boyers and Fr. guard Tommy Cervan haven't played the last few games and Cervan is no longer on the roster.

I can't add anything about Adam Raynor as he didn't play against BW, he only played 4 min. against Adrian, 16 against Kzoo.  This is by roster the youngest team in the league.

Hope's had some difficulty with Olivet in recent years mostly at Olivet.  After Wed night I might look for Hope to try and get a quicker more energetic start.  Olivet has had a week since their last game, maybe something else to think about.
