I'm guessing no big deal for those lucky enough to experience the old Knollcrest visitor locker rooms....

We actually supplied you with toilets?!

I think that in the Civic Center it was possible for someone to be sitting on one of those in the locker-room and actually see the court - or be seen by the fans, should the locker-room door be open.

I'll never forget my first visit to the Civic Center locker room as a visiting player. I had seen several Calvin/Hope contests there as a youngster and I was genuinely excited to play Holland Christian at that famous venue for my first high school game. I didn't know it was less than a regulation size court, but if I had I wouldn't have cared. At long last the day came and when I finally walked through the door to look inside the hallowed locker room, I could feel my jaw drop as I saw the size of the facilities, which seemed smaller than a walk-in closet. Then I peeked around the corner and saw a shoe box for a shower room, and realized that after the game I was going to get up close and personal with my teammates. It's still a fun place to watch a game but the feelings of grandeur I had for the building left my bones that day and never returned.

The chest high lockers are what I remember.

In addition to all the fine amenities noted above, I'm reasonably sure that Hope made sure there were two facility guys shoveling coal into the visitor's locker room boiler starting about two hours before game time--and then added a third midway through the first half to ensure that the temp was over 100 by halftime.   Add to that the fine soundproof qualities, and I'm pretty sure you could stand in the hall outside the locker room and hear everything being said.  No wonder the halftime adjustments never worked!

Albion 73  Olivet 63

Close game all the way.  Olivet led 54-50 with a little over 9 to play and only scored 1 FG the rest of the way.  Albion salted it away at the ft line after Carter Elliot's reverse lay-in plus one gave the Britons an insurmountable 6 point lead with :34 to play.

Herron  18 pts, 13 rbs.
Krum  22 pts, 11 rbs.

Hope at Alma  7:30pm

I've only been able to watch partial Alma contests so I have no great feel for them or their personnel.  The Scots are just 2-12 but like Olivet probably a little better than that record indicates.  In the league they're 1-2.  An 8 point loss at home to Calvin where 3-point shooting kept them in the game, a surprising last second win at Albion, and coming off an 18 point home loss to Trine.

G  Brandon Krause   6-0  Sr.
G  Scott Nikodemski  6-1  So.
F  Chase Fairchild     6-1 Fr.
F  D.J.  Beckman       6-3  So.
F  Isiah Law             6-5  Sr.
--------------------------------------
F  Kyle Aho               6-2 Sr.
C  Ivy Johnson         6-6  Fr.
G  Tyler Walden       5-10 So.
G  Brandon Trefill      6-0  So.

Fairchild has worked his way into the starting lineup the last few games,  Aho or Johnson have started 5 games each.  Alma's been playing pretty heavy on the minutes for the starting 5 in league play with 4 guys averaging over 30 and the 5th at 28.  Pretty balanced scoring among the starters and they have been known to shoot a lot of 3's.

I think its fair to say this is another of those road games where if you don't play well, you lose.

Exactly - another one of those upset stomach when I think about it kind of games (or maybe that's from the chilli I ate last night).  But then it also won't surprise me to see Hope win by a lot.

I think you are both right.  I watched the Calvin/Alma game, and Calvin just never could quite deliver a knock out blow.  They remind me of the old Turner Albion teams where they played to keep it close at the end, and than hoped to get lucky.  They don't have the horses either Hope or Calvin have, but Sammy does a good job getting his guys ready and up for games.

Nice game tonight by the Knights. They beat Trine 71-49.* After a few too many turnovers in the first half, they seemed to turn things around in the 2nd half. Solid performance by the starters and Parks. Good ball movement in the 2nd half on offense, and the defense was solid -- and not just the blocked shots (don't know how many there were, but it seemed like there were 3 blocked shots in one 2 minute stretch[just checked: 9 blocked shots]). Brink, Dykstra, Kruis all in double figures; DeVries and Dykstra with 10 rebounds each, Parks with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Knights shoot 55% percent and 60% from behind the arc.

*Could have been 73-49; Mickey DeVries had a great tip-in that was waived off (goal-tending); I had a poor angle, but I didn't see the goal tending from where I was sitting.

Hope 93  Alma 82

This was 33-30 at the half, opened up quite a bit in the second half.  VanArendonk was too much to handle and Eidson got warm from 3.  Both teams shot over 50% in the second half, maybe even 60%

Hope:  Eidson 25, VanArendonk 22, Gardner 15
Alma:  Beckman 21, Krause 18, Law 17, Fairchild 12

Kzoo 66  Adrian 56

Adrian led this one 33-23 at the half.

I agree with the comment on the great tip-in.  It did not look even close to being in the cylinder.  Calvin could also have had another two points when Brad Visser stole the ball with about 25 seconds left and had an easy lay-up.  But he chose to just run out the clock--which I thought was a really classy  move by a freshman who does not yet get a lot of playing time.   But the big story of the game to me was Calvin's second half defense which held Trine to .231 shooting.  Tyler Dykstra had an incredible game with 10 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 14 points.  In fact, both he and Tyler Kruis only missed 1 shot each for the entire game.  Well done!  Calvin made a great adjustment at halftime to avoid so many turnovers, too.

The 6 minute stretch from the 15 minute mark down to the 9 minute mark of the first half was some of the ugliest basketball I have seen Calvin play.  8 turnovers in 6 minutes!  Dykstra had 3 in 1 minute.

The other 34 minutes of the game Calvin played well.  As the other posters said Dykstra played well.  Calvin had 43-19 rebounding margin.  Trine usually had no one near the offensive board.

I had a great angle (from 15 feet away) and I didn't see it either. It was wrongly called. The ref underneath the basket--who had the same angle I did--wasn't the official who called the basket interference. It was the outside ref with the poorest look who blew the whistle.

Calvin's interior defense and rebounding prowess thoroughly dominated Trine. Officially the box score shows 6 blocks by Tyler Dykstra but I'm confident the stat crew missed at least two others. As has been the case most of the season, Calvin really defended close to the basket exceptionally well. Trine needed to shoot well from the arc tonight but didn't and especially needed Tatu to be on. He wasn't, never appeared comfortable and went 0-6 on three balls. The only reason Calvin's lead at half was at 8 points was due to some very poor decision making as the Knights had 12 mostly unforced turnovers the first 20 minutes. Calvin needs to be better with the ball. Tyler Kruis was terrific in the post.

I came away very impressed with Tyler Good. This kid has a high motor, excellent quickness, a nose for the ball and can really play the game. Watkins is a very athletic 6'7" who competes well too. Trine is going to win some games in this league and I don't look forward to the trip to Angola. If the Thunder shoot well from the arc, they can beat any team in the league.

KzooHornet

I wasn't able to tune into the Hornet game until halftime so I will take full credit for their comeback win.  I can remember entire games the past few years where it was hard to score 43 points against Adrian, so to score that in one half was a big deal.  Always nice to get a win on the road.

Adam Peters continues to impress me with his play this year.  If there were a most improved award given by the coaches, my guess is he would be a strong contender.

Another road game on Saturday but I can't remember who we play...

According to the officials mechanics book, the underneath official is not to look at the ball during the shot, that is the responsibility of the of the other officials.  Who is watching the players underneath and around the basket if he is watching the ball.  If the underneath official would of called goal tending or basket interference he would of been ripped by his fellow officials or any league official who might be observing.  Goal tending or basket interference is not the responsibility of the underneath official.

You are right on Tyler Good.  Plays as hard as anyone in the league.  Really enjoy watching him.
