Too bad the game will be at Wash U.... Of course, that's sort of like saying too bad Calvin has to play Wash U. The D3 Hoops projected bracket and some of the other predicted brackets looked a whole lot more favorable than what Calvin ended up with.

I do think Calvin is playing well now. Unlike last year, I think they are healthy. And while Wash U certainly has to be favored, I have to believe that Wash U is thinking "We are the 3rd ranked team in the nation. How come we have to face a team as good as Calvin in the 2nd round." (Ie, I can't believe Wash U will go into the game thinking they will blow Calvin away. But maybe they'll enter the game thinking they want a piece of Calvin..... Or maybe not ....

Calvin was very good defensively again tonight.  #55, Macin, their leading scorer, had just 6 points.  He was very frustrated by the vice Calvin put him in.  Witt's 2 starting forwards had 0 points.  The Witt starting front line combined for 6 points.  Tyler Kruis was great tonight!  Calvin didn't play as well as they are capable on the offensive end tonight.  Referee's were not good tonight.  I think Calvin has another win in them tomorrow night.

Were you in the gym or watching online? I was in the gym. Curious to know why you thought the refs weren't good.

I was in the gym.  I thought the way the hand checking was called tonight was very inconsistent.  Reporting the wrong number on a player foul to the scorer's table is a mistake that should not happen.  A second foul on Daley as opposed to it being Van Loo's first is important.  I didn't think that crew worked very well together.
Not sure if it was the case in this instance, but one of the complaints about postseason officiating heard from both coaches (and some officials), particularly at the high school and lower college levels, is that in breaking up crews that work a lot together during the regular season and taking the best individual officials and combining them for the postseason, the whole is often not greater than the sum of the parts.  In talking with both high school and college officials, there can be a great degree of variability in quality....and 1 "bad" official with two "good" ones can lead to some less than stellar officiating and the problem you note.

Regarding NVA, this sounds more past tense than promising for Hope fans in terms of him coming back next year.  From the Hope recap of the game:

Nate VanArendonk, a 6-foot-10 senior center from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS), led the Flying Dutchmen with 17 points in what might've been his final collegiate game.

"I wouldn't trade my experience here for anything," said VanArendonk, who earned All-MIAA First Team honors this season. "I didn't expect me to fall in love as much with this team as I did. These guys were my brothers."

I missed that nuance--what "might've" (or might not have?) been his last game?

I assumed that NVA's being introduced with his family for senior night, and (on the women's side) Brittany Berry not being introduced, signaled their respective intentions . . . though they have time to change their minds.  I presume that Jordan Brink, like Berry, was not introduced on Calvin's senior night?

That's correct, he was not. Brink is also listed on Calvin's roster as a junior.

----I really thought Wilmington would give WashU a much better game.  I watched WashU play very early in the year a couple times and they didn't really stand out to me.  Seems like there's a real opportunity for Calvin tomorrow night.  And root for St. Norbert and Dickenson and you'll be hosting.

Dickinson would be a flight to GR. I think Calvin would host only if both they and Behrend win today (and Dickenson and/or St. Norbert win).

Wheaton winning would ruin any chance for Calvin to host, I think

At 3 am, Calvin hosting seemed like a better possibility.  But you're right Wheaton/Wooster would host before Calvin.

Someone (Sac?  Greg Sager?) would likely know better, but my understanding is that a 5th year student need only be full time the first semester (with a needed course or two taken the second semester).  That means that someone like Jordan Brink or Brittany Berry (or NVA) needn't--if my understanding is correct--finance an added year of school.

I definitely agree that the error in reporting the proper player number on that foul made the official look bad, and clearly would have been a problem for Calvin had it not been corrected. But they did make the correction, with some encouragement from the Calvin bench, or players, or scorer's table (not exactly sure who was asking them to make the change or clarify the jersey number reported) so let's give the officials credit for ultimately getting it right. I will say that I've seen many games where that kind of mistake has been made and corrected, though usually more quickly.

As to knightvision's comment above, I have seen all three of those officials working SLIAC and Wash U games for many years. I'm sure they have each worked with one another on many occasions. I can't say how often, if ever, all three of them have worked games together, but I'd bet it's happened before more than once.

Over the years I've read many complaints about officiating on these boards, though not nearly as much this season as in past seasons. Over on the SLIAC and CCIW boards there is lots of conversation about a couple of calls that happened at the very end of the Webster-Illinois Wesleyan game last night. As one of the posters said, how you see it depends on what lens you are looking through.

I really can't remember but I'm pretty sure you have to be enrolled in some kind of course work, otherwise you really aren't a student athlete.

I think Hope fans should just count on Nate VanArendonk graduating and moving on in his life.  It was wonderful to have him be part of Hope basketball these 3 years and I think he has a lot to be proud of, not the least of which a degree from a very fine school.

Hard to believe 4 years has passed since I saw Nate for the first time in the MHSAA quarterfinal at Lansing Eastern against a Michael Thomas coached Kalamazoo Central.

I believe they would need to be taking at least 9 credits in the spring semester. If you are a normal student who has not graduated you must take at least 12. But if you have graduated I believe 9 is the required amount to play a sport.

Wheaton shut down PSU-B in the second half of their game.  For the first time on the weekend PSUB really forced some shots in the 2nd half and lost discipline.  Wheaton imposed thier size and will and walk away with the comfortable win.

8 turnovers for Wheaton in case anyone was wondering

With Calvin up 5 at the half the announcers report that WU could be up 2 or 3 if they had hit better [than 5 out of 10] with their free throws in the first half. I don't remember WU missing the front end of a 1-1.

All right, I was wrong. WU missed the front end of 3 1-1s. I apologize.
