Jason Hugan  6-8  F/C Milford will attend Kalamazoo College
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRes1WiSTSA

In an interview last fall he listed these schools as having interest.  Albion, Alma, Grand Valley, Central (Michigan?), IUPUI, Washing(ton?) University, Toledo, Arkon, Cleveland State.

Mr. Hugan must have missed the recent posts on the MIAA page of d3boards.com, otherwise he'd realize that he just signed up for 4 long painful years of being completely dominated by Connor VanderBrug.

I'm setting the over/under on league MVP awards at 4.5

Happened to be at Van Noord yesterday (a work thing I couldn't get out of) and I see they already have Connor's picture up with the other Calvin All-Americans.  It also appeared they were stenciling something on the playing surface - looked like VanderBrug Court.  And lastly I hear he has contributed the funds for a proper scoreboard that includes a means of tracking fouls on each team.   ;D

???

My mistake - meant to say a players points and fouls::

Last night I took in the first ever game at Van Noord, won by the Calvin JV. I think I spent more time scoping the new arena than I did watching the game. I expected the facility to be spectacular and I wasn't disappointed.

We had barely entered the arena when my wife insisted on checking out the restroom accomodations to count stalls. For the record, Mrs. OldKnight reports there are 18 stalls in the concourse level women's restroom on the near side of the arena. That may be more information than you need to know but one of her pet peeves at Knollcrest was the inadequacy of the ladies' restroom which always seemed to have a long line. She then dispatched me to make a similar count in the men's room and after giving her the numbers, Mrs. OK provided Calvin with her Title IX seal of approval. I'm sure Henry DeVries is now breathing a sigh of relief.

I visited several seats to check out the viewing and the sight lines are mostly excellent. The only goofy thing I noticed was at the two corners of the upper bowl where the curved portion meets the seating against the flat wall. At that point there is a railing which requires the first couple of people seated in the curved area to view a portion of the floor through the railing, a situation which isn't ideal. However, goodknight noted that these seats are (pre)destined for Hope fans anyway so it really doesn't matter. :)

It's amazing how much smaller Calvin's national championship banners appear in this larger arena. If they hadn't placed them around the American flag I wouldn't have even noticed them. Speaking of Old Glory, it looked like they had just unpacked it from the box minutes before the game because fold marks were embarrasingly apparent during the National Anthem. I would suggest that Calvin get a larger American flag because the one they have now is simply too small for an arena the size of Van Noord.

I also had the opportunity to take in Van Noord Arena for the first time on Monday and it lived up to all of my expectations.  The place is big but it still gives the feeling that it could get really loud inside when (if?  :-\) it is sold out.  If the Calvin students come out in force this year VNA could provide a great homecourt advantage.

The only negative thing I took away from my first visit to "The Noord" was the lack of a "Player/Points/Fouls" scoreboard.   ???

I don't get your complaint.  Calvin's scoreboard does that.

Former Olivet PG Jeff Cain will resurface next year at Aquinas College.  Jeff spent 2013 at Olivet and 2014 at Lansing Community College.

AQ is also getting Frank DeVos from L'Anse Cruese North, he missed this year with a knee injury.

Looking at that video (and a few others posted by a person I am assuming is his dad), this looks like a pretty good get for 'K'.  I could probably make even my game look good in a highlight tape, but the videos show him hitting a 3, scoring inside, finishing in transition, blocking shots, etc.  It looks like Coach Dugal is starting to put together another solid class.

I'm somewhat excited about going there next year just to pay attention to these allegedly cool lights. Although I believe I have been to every Hope v. calvin game at VNA, I have never noticed them. I'm surprised I haven't noticed them being so high and away from the court. At least I'm not ever low enough that the people on that wide walkway or its rails block my view of the court.

I did, once, have the opportunity to sit in the lower bowl, which was a very nice viewing experience.

While we're on the topic of arena's why not discuss the Devos?  I know as fans we will never sit on the bench during a game but talk about wonderful design to have the away team have to walk across the scorers table and Hope's bench in order to get to the locker room.  It's especially fun to see when this happens during the game and I'm sure opposing players love it.  Also, the design of the bleachers and where they sit when pulled out for games was must have taken some time to measure out.  They did such a good job of covering up "Hope College" on the baseline.

That's gotta be the first time I've ever heard of a home team doing something to make the visiting team uncomfortable - NOT (i.e. the visiting locker room at the U of Iowa football stadium is painted pink).

Not sure about the bleachers comment though - doesn't cover up the baseline (and if it did, would probably mean the court didn't meet regulations)

What? I thought that the easiest way to set off a knight was to bring up their school's debt.

I did find this quote from WZZM13 interesting.

"The strategy for Calvin College is to use the next five years to plan for the next 20," said Michael Le Roy, president of Calvin College. "We want to remain anchored in what we do well, but be nimble."

Did he say "anchored"?!

Jason's a good player, great shot-blocking instincts. Gotta get tougher on the boards.
