Apparently,   ;)  he and the college  ;) made a mutual  ;) decision for him to resign  ;)

What part of that is not crystal clear?  ::)

Cool article, and it got me thinking about a notable omission from the article.  Donnie Nelson, the current GM for the Dallas Mavericks, is a Wheaton alum who I played against many moons ago when was at Wheaton.  Donnie was a hard-nosed competitor and a very nice player (12th on the all-time scoring list).  Prior to becoming the GM for the Mavericks in 2002, he was an Assistant Coach at Golden State, Phoenix, and Dallas.   While his path to the NBA was clearly aided by his dad Don, he has more than established his own identity as a successful GM.

Fascinating to note that when I went digging on Wheaton's website to look up Donn Nelson, the "History" tab that talks a fair bit about Donnie also notes that Wheaton alum Randy Pfund was the first Wheaton alum to be a head coach in the NBA (Los Angeles Lakers, 1992-1994), and Dick Helm, a former head coach at Wheaton, also coached in the NBA as an assistant to Lenny Wilkens at multiple NBA stops.  A pretty remarkable history for Wheaton when it comes to connections with the NBA!

It would be interesting to know if Donnie has kept in touch with his alma mater the way "Pop" has done with his...

UW Whitewater won NCAA National Championship in baseball yesterday.  They are the first school in NCAA history to win a football, basketball, and baseball national titles in one school year.

This is the final out of the baseball game.  I would not want to be at the bottom of the pile.

Pretty cool...

I do however  struggle with the "fairness" of a DIII school with "state university" costs. I realize there are plenty of expensive DIII schools with successful athletic programs, but wouldn't recruiting some athletes to a Hope or Calvin be a bit easier if it only cost 12 grand a year to attend?

I'm certainly not arguing the quality of education...
Although the cost of a "good" education probably keeps my 5 kids from going to Hope unless scholarships (leadership or otherwise) pay the way.

On an NPR discussion this morning of the costs and financial benefits of college (see www.nytimes.com/2014/05/27/upshot/is-college-worth-it-clearly-new-data-say.html) Franklin and Marshall's president said that, thanks to tuition discounting and scholarship/loan aid, "we only charge people what they can afford to pay."  I've heard Hope folks say much the same thing.

Five children going to college--kudos if you can manage that, NW Hope fan!--should help get you some tuition discounting!

The UW schools clearly value athletics, but "state schools" in general don't necessarily get all the benefits. Staten Island's coach was on Hoopsville after selection Monday and talked about how their budget got slashed to the point where they can hardly afford to travel. A school like that would look at Calvin/Hope/Wheaton and talk about "all the private funding" and how their budgets aren't subject to the approval of a state board.

One could probably find a tuition "sticker price" database somewhere and see how it correlates with winning percentage for any given D3 sport. My guess is the correlation (in either direction) is small or non-existent, at least in basketball. For every UWW or UWSP you can name, there's an Amher$t, William$, or Wa$h U to counter.

Its a year or two old but this seems to suggest the UW's receive about 20% of the budgets from the state.  Pg 32 is where the financials begin.

http://www.uwsa.edu/cert/publicat/factbook.pdf

Ferris State University is comparable in size to Whitewater with 2,000 more students and operates with a comparable budget.  Ferris received 17% of their budget from the State.
