The Calvin roster is up, as well.
All the best to the Knights in the next season:

Nothing particularly surprising about Calvin's roster selections. The seldom used Eric Brower is not on the team this year, nor is BJ Van Loo who has, as ziggy noted, returned to Grace Bible from whence he came. This summer I had heard Nick Kronemeyer was transferring to Grand Valley but more recently I was told by a Hamilton HS assistant that Nick was still at Calvin. I'm pleased to see him on the varsity roster. He's an excellent athlete, very quick, a good ball handler, and a hardnosed defender—both on the ball and helping out. He's not a particularly good outside shooter but he takes the ball to the hole hard and has obvious leadership skills. I believe he can help Calvin this year. Given the number of players on this team who can run the floor, I trust that this foreshadows a season with often used 3 guard lineups to stretch an opponent's defense. It's Jordan Brinks' team now and the Knights will go as far as he can take them.

The JV roster is up too and seems to sport not one, but two sets of twins, plus a kid who matriculated from Budapest. Since my bloodline is 50% Magyar, I'm pleased by Calvin's willingness to think outside the box in recruitment. No word on how many trips KVS made to my mother's homeland to land the kid.

I'm sure that he went there more for the hotcakes than for the basketball recruiting.

Sure would like to know how you got this photo of Aunt Lisa at the griddle. :o My Uncle Oliver said it was supposed to say strictly in the family.

Eb Dawson: Morning! Breakfast ready?
Lisa Douglas: Yes.
Eb Dawson: Well, let's have the hotcakes and get it over with.
Lisa Douglas: We're not having any hotscakes this morning.
Oliver Douglas: No hotcakes?
Lisa Douglas: I've made something different.
Oliver Douglas: Hey, wonderful!
Eb Dawson: Let's not go off half-cocked till we get a look at it.
Oliver Douglas: Knock it off, anything's better than the hotcakes.
Lisa Douglas: Here we are.
[Holds up what looks like a long, lumpy pastry on a baking sheet]
Eb Dawson: Any hotcakes left over from yesterday?
Lisa Douglas: You don't like it?
Eb Dawson: I don't know. What is it?
Lisa Douglas: Well what does it look like?
Oliver Douglas: It looks like a boa constrictor with lumps.
Lisa Douglas: That's the last time I ever cook you a Spanish omelette!

I took a second look at the Calvin roster this morning, and it will be interesting to find who will start and which  subs will get most of the playing time.  It was also noteworthy that the roster includes 8 guards, only 4 forwards, and 2 centers.  That is particularly striking since the team only a few years earlier was really lacking in quality guards to the point that they had to play natural forwards in at least one guard position all season long.  Maybe that had an effect on recruiting?  The number of guards may reflect a movement toward speed rather than the long-time tradition of pounding the ball up to the big men.

Does anyone know whether any freshman other than Connor VdB is likely to see much playing time?

Calvin and Hope are carrying 8 and 9 guards respectively.

I'm kind of thinking both recruiting and the make-up of the league are dictating the rosters some.   I also think both have guys listed as guards who can play forward pretty easily at this level.

Another factor has to be the difficulty of recruiting mobile, athletic big men with the availability of athletic scholarships for those who are really outstanding.  But the effect seem to result in more action packed and exciting basketball as compared to some years when there was so much emphasis on passing in to the big, strong center that it became so predictable.  It looks to be an exciting year coming with more competitive teams throughout the league.

Zeeland West offensive line may be program's best ever
Quote from: mlive on October 21, 2014, 11:33:45 AMSenior guard Matt Bultman said the group was motivated from the opening days of practice in the summer to prove itself, since the unit was losing highly-regarded tackle Jordan VanDort. VanDort signed with Western Michigan University but has since transferred to Hope College.

VanDort was a nice post player for Zeeland West... classic widebody. Any idea if is eligible to play this winter? He could do some damage in the MIAA.

He'll play football for Hope next year but no mention of basketball: http://www.hollandsentinel.com/article/20141013/Sports/141019725

Given his skillset and size, I think he's strictly a football player at the college level. He would struggle to get up and down a basketball floor.

Can I assume the Stout twins are Dan's brothers?  Anything known about their game?

Yes; you may assume. What we know about their game is that it's 4 inches shorter than their brother's.
