Lost in shuffle of the last couple months is Albion adding their 11th non-conference game.

Jan 18  at Oakland University

This comes a day after playing Adrian and 2 days before Olivet.   3 games in 5 days in the middle of the conference season.

Heard yesterday that Josh Groenhof, the former Zeeland East big man who had signed with Cornerstone after taking a year off from basketball (I believe I remember reading on here that he was enrolled at Hope last year) is no longer at Cornerstone.  He is not listed on their roster.  He was recruited by several MIAA schools and I believe he would have been a very nice player either in the MIAA or the WHAC.  I know nothing about the circumstances and hope everything is OK with him--seems like a really good young man and was a classy competitor in high school.

First roster of the season is up - and it's Alma's

http://www.goalmascots.com/sports/mbkb/2014-15/roster

22 total listed (not split into V and JV) includes 8 Freshman.  Newcomers Kevin Gamble and Brooks Hyble could be impact guys for Alma.  They are both 6-7 and played together at Mt Pleasant Sacred Heart.  Gamble was All-State Class D, while Hyble recieved honorable mention.

It might be purely my biased opinion but I think Alma's other 6-7 Freshmen you didn't mention, Doug Bradfield from Mason will be Alma's top impact Freshmen this year, and possibly the leagues.

He's very similar to Hope's Cody Stuive, interesting both are listed at 6-7 185lb for their Freshman year.

If the Scots can work around being so young they might be pushing pretty hard for the 4th MIAA tournament slot.

Rumor has it that Connor Vander Brug of Calvin is also likely to  have an impact as a freshman.  Are there any other freshman likely to see a lot of action on the varsity?  What about Dante Hawkins of Hope?  Is Tony Goeglin from Spring Lake with his good size talented enough to see much varsity time?  What about Jason Beckman of Alma?

With Hope's returning back-court, I don't think Hawkins would be on varsity if he wasn't going to play.

When it comes to making an impact I think a teams present situation has to be taken into account.  Hawkins and Vanderbrug might be the two best Fr. in the league, but a guy like Bradfield or someone at Adrian or Olivet is going to get a better chance to show their ability.

Quote from: oldknight on October 20, 2014, 07:12:52 PMThe JV roster is up too and seems to sport not one, but two sets of twins, plus a kid who matriculated from Budapest. Since my bloodline is 50% Magyar, I'm pleased by Calvin's willingness to think outside the box in recruitment. No word on how many trips KVS made to my mother's homeland to land the kid.

I'm sure that he went there more for the hotcakes than for the basketball recruiting.

Sure would like to know how you got this photo of Aunt Lisa at the griddle. :o My Uncle Oliver said it was supposed to say strictly in the family.

Great volleyball match won by Calvin (3 to 1) tonight . . . with 3000 fans, including the whole bleacher side filled with white-shirted, mostly male Calvin students.  Very impressive turnout and enthusiasm.  Also great to see so many of Hope's women's and men's BB players there supporting their comrades.

If you want to spit cola out through your nose, the D3hoops preseason poll is out:

I would have to say that my nose is completely cola-less, but I am slightly surprised. Looking at there schedule, I saw a solid 21-4. I saw the Ohio Wesleyan, Cornerstone, Hope at the Devos and a toss up between Carthage or Wheaton as loses. The DIII experts may not be totally insane on this one.

3 of the top 6 didn't even win their conference last year.

Ripon and Oshkosh won't be pushovers, but Calvin should have at least 7 wins wins going into conference play.  I might even bump that to nine.

OWU lost its #2, 3 and 4 scorers, they have some holes to fill like Calvin.
