It felt 50-50 between illegal screens and rebounding or loose ball fouls.

Hope leads Carthage at the half 35-24.  Carthage committed 14 fouls and I would bet at least 8 were committed in the offensive end and not one a charge that I can recall.  Hope is 17-18 from the line, kind of a ragged game.

I was thinking of this post after the Calvin-Carthage game. Did the Red Men get whistled for a bunch of illegal screens against Hope? Seems like one could whistle them every other time down the floor.

If I remember correctly, they did get called for several illegal screens.  Officiating crew on Friday was calling everything (expecially in the first half) and Carthage didn't seem to adjust to it very well.

I nearly went deaf Saturday afternoon when KS, seated two rows behind me, tried to repeatedly tell the crew doing the Calvin/Carthage game that the Red Men screens were illegal. I don't think they called Carthage once in the game against the Knights. No matter how much they try to standardize officiating, different sets of officials have different interpretations of the same rule. Just ask Austin Parks.

Is it possible the officials got mixed signals with the slapettes repeating the phrase "let it go?"

Given OWU's 7-0 record and who they've beaten this is a very impressive win for Trine.  We might have ourselves a heck of a conference season this year.  The Thunder almost let this one get away leading by 12 with 3:50 to play, OWU made 4 straight 3's before finally missing one in the last 30 seconds.

Will Dixon had 32 for Trine, Claude Gray had 29 for OWU  Gray was 7-10 from 3.

Gamebreaker:  18 turnovers for OW and Trine made 31 points off of those turnovers.

I was at the TU-OWU game tonight.  Quality win for the Thunder.  OWU came in ranked 6th.  If you like offensive basketball this game was for you.  OWU came out very hot making their first 8 shots and 12 out of 13 with many of those from 3.  Trine didn't panic though and slowly chipped away and was only down 2 at half.  In the second half Trine had a big run midway thru the half and got up by 14 at one point before OWU started to extend their D, and then hit some big shots.  Trine hit enough free throws to hold on for the W.

Some observations for you folks who don't know much about Trine basketball.  They won't wow you with size, and don't have a deep bench.  However, they are very fundamentally sound, take care of the basketball, take good shots, and hustle.  Rebounding will be a challenge against teams that pound the glass.  Their "Big 3" of Dixon, Good, and Holmquist are solid.  Dixon was a stud tonight, when he wants to take over a game, he can, but is almost too unselfish sometimes.  Good is Trine's best athlete, he was in foul trouble and eventually fouled out right when OWU started to make their final run tonight.  Holmquist is our only guy with size who plays a lot of minutes.  I fear bigger teams who pound it inside will give Trine the most trouble and Holmquist needs to stay on the floor as we don't have much experience off the bench from any "big".  Even though OWU had more size than Trine, they like to shoot the 3, as well they should as they hit a high percentage of them.  Bagley was the difference maker for Trine tonight, mostly a role player, he had a big shooting night and played a lot of minutes.  Syroka is their point guard, doesn't look to score, but has a nice shot when left open, he is a nice addition as a transfer.  In the first half Trine played 11 guys, but in the second half Coach Miller shortened his bench considerably.  This was key as the guys were in such a flow that he didn't dare sub anyone in.

I am more of a Trine football guy than basketball, don't get to nearly as many basketball games as I should.  This team will be competitive in the MIAA.  I hope the students/faculty/staff and Angola community get behind them and come on out to the games.

So the league is sitting at 22-26.  Wish it was better, but my gut feeling is that there are some pretty good wins in there - better than last year.  Thoughts?

Last year at this time the league was 21-30.

Other than last nights win by Trine over Ohio Wesleyan, Hope's wins over Wheaton and Cornerstone and Albion  over Elmhurst I'm not sure I would agree.  The Bulk of these wins have been against some pretty struggling teams.

Franklin(2)   0-7
Earlham(3)  0-7
Manchester(4)  2-5..........beat 0-7 Earlham and Wright Lake State(Ohio Regional Campus League)
Berry 3-5
Anderson  2-4
Waynesburg  2-5
Carthage  3-5
Illinois Tech  0-7........first year D3
PSU-Lehigh Valley  3-8...(USCAA)
Aquinas 6-8  (NAIA II)
Purdue-Calumet  4-6  (NAIA II)

I guess there have been some 'good' losses like Hope to Whitewater by 2 and Albion to Augustana by 4.  But the league is something like 4-15 against D3's with winning records. :-\

According to Massey's conference page, the MIAA has the #4 SOS in D3.

I'll buy that, but the league isn't winning many of those tough games.

When you look at the entire schedule of games so far I don't think the MIAA has fared that poorly.  Granted we have played something like 10 HCAC schools, but we have played a nearly equal number of CCIW schools.  The NCAA made it pretty clear that they wanted to see a larger percentage of "in region D3" games (meaning don't even think of asking for a waiver), and even those who lagged behind on the issue responded this year.  We are now seeing WIAC schools on a lot of the schedules, and some of the Ohio schools are also appearing more frequently.  OWU was quite proud of themselves for beating Calvin, and rightly so.   Doesn't it feel good knowing a fellow MIAA team knocked them out of the undefeated ranks?  One has to feel for the Alma team as they have not looked to pad their W's, and I just hope it isn't Calvin that pays the price for the lessons Alma is  learning.  If playing tougher teams at the expense of losing to some of them makes the conference tougher overal it should help everyone.
Did Calvin learn more when beating Anderson and Carthage than they did while losing to Wheaton and OWU?
