Did I really just read a 2 1/2 page philosophical debate about should we or shouldn't we rush the court?  ............by the WINNING team.

Every Hope Calvin game thats ended with a last second win with a made or missed shot has ended with students on the floor, and good for them.  As someone who's watched Calvin fans celebrate with those kinds of wins way to many times, it warms my heart to know my last memory of Calvin's Fieldhouse may be the Dew Crew jumping up and down in celebration of a hard fought Hope victory. ;D

I think my goal for the Hope/Calvin rivalry is to have a game like Albion/John Carroll had where both sets of fans rush the court thinking they'd won, and I wander around aimlessly wondering what the heck I just missed. ???

Priceless! ;)

What's the context here.  Was someone nearly trampled in 2008?.

Is it possible my thoughts on this changed a little after witnessing first hand what might go wrong,  it has been 7 years?

Dykstra is a surprise.  I don't remember the league selecting a defensive player before.  Nice addition.

First time, although I wasn't shocked to see a DPOY considering they've been doing it on the women's side since 2003.

I thought Daley deserved second-team recognition, even if you wanted to do it at Dykstra's expense to not add another Calvin player, but maybe Dykstra gets the nod as a senior.

must have been a tough vote, all those listed deserved it. Someone had to get left off. What were the criteria for defensive player of year?

With the regular season over I think I'd go with this for All-MIAA

MVP--Jordan Brink, Calvin

First Team
Jordan Brink, Calvin
Jared Holmquist, Trine
Harrison Blackledge, Hope
Scott Nikodemski, Alma
Brock Benson, Hope
Will Dixon, Trine

2nd Team
Ricky Jackson, Adrian
Jordan Daley, Calvin
Travell Oakes, Albion
Jake Zielinski, Olivet
Ben Gardner, Hope
Tyler Good, Trine
DJ Beckman, Alma

This is leaving out a handful of good players like Alex Eidson-Hope, Austin Parks-Calvin, Deondre Callahan-Olivet, Adam Peters-Kzoo, Ben Sykora-Trine and I really liked Doug Bradfield and Jason Beckman at Alma.

My list had Zielinski.  In hind site I probably couldn't decide between he and  Beckman.  I picked Daley and I still think he should have been recognized, he was really good for a few weeks in there.

Two questions based on the following hypothetical: Let's say Gardner hadn't lost control of the ball at the end and instead had scored the game winning basket at the buzzer--right in front of the Hope fans and students:

1) Would the Hope students have rushed the floor to celebrate with their team?

2) If the answer to 1) is yes, which view would we have gotten from you, the one from 2008 or the modified version from 2015?

I hope this reaches the right people, and I'm asking for help of fellow posters and anyone else who might have been at the game tonight.

Hope and Calvin are in a position to be leaders on an issue that is getting more and more national attention.  As silly as it sounds, court rushes.  What happened at the end of this game was extremely dangerous.  I care too much about what goes on in this game to see it marred permanently by something that can be prevented.

I'm asking those of you in attendance tonight to let both the Hope and Calvin AD's know that you'd like a copy of the video sent to ESPN about what could potentially go wrong at the end of a game.  We were way, way to close to something very serious happening and its just not worth it.

It does not take much for a person to be crushed and seriously or permanently injured.

Thanks.

Again, this is what I posted Saturday night.  No judgement, no opinion or anything just an honest request to ask the AD's to be out in front of this now national topic and maybe have the chance to offer their opinion.

In your hypothetical which is impossible to answer does a Calvin player nearly get trampled?  If so my answer is the same.

You want my opinion, here it is:

I love when students are involved in the game, love to see them celebrate on the court.  But Saturday was a wake-up call that it can go badly, and that there is probably a right way and wrong way to do it.  So I asked those who might feel the same way to ask their AD's to be part of the national discussion.  Maybe I didn't convey that in a clear way, but after a very hard 4 or 5 days I was pretty exhausted Saturday night.    That was it.

A lot of words are being pinned on me that I didn't write Saturday night.

Mr. Ypsi

It seems to me that simple decency requires that the winning fans wait until the (heart-broken) losing players have had a chance to make a gracious exit before storming the court.  I fully realize that college students, caught up in the excitement (and whether or not alcohol-fueled), are not likely to exhibit this degree of courtesy - that is why the 'adults' in the situation need to be more pro-active.

Ah yes, good catch. Gardner is one of those guys who seems like he'll be playing his seventh year of eligibility next year as it is. No need to give him any more!

After virtually every Calvin game oldknight gives a rundown of the game as he sees it.  Same for sac after every Hope game.  I saw oldknight's review of the tournament championship game but, unless I missed it, still nothing from sac.  What do you think happened sac?  Did Mitchell just get out-coached?  Think Matt Neil would have lost 3 this year to the Knights?

I watched Iowa State bounce back from a 22 point deficit to Oklahoma last night and it reminded me of Saturday's game at VanNoord.  Franchise player steps up and takes over.  Similar to what MVP Jordan Brink did on Saturday.

I was surprised Blackledge failed to show up.  Or, maybe it was because Dykstra did show up.

Also surprised with all the comments about the raucous Calvin students.  Usually they are accused of being to quiet and second fiddle to the clever DewCrew.  By the way, do they need some new material?  Rowing?  Still mocking deceased Ernie Crier with their calethsentics?  I think the AD's or CNN should put put a stop to that.  On a more positive mote, the cheerleaders were quite handsome.

Good luck Knights in your coveted tournament appearance!

Wiz, I'm with you in appreciating both OldKnight's and Sac's analyses.  Sac's write-up on the game is on his blog site, where he expresses admiration for Jordan Brink and calls out the Dew Crew for its player taunting, but also questions his further participation here in the aftermath of the negative feedback on his posts.

I'm sure we agree in hoping he (and the other Hope posters who have sworn off posting for awhile), like OldKnight, will continue to inform us and perhaps occasionally provoke us.

I don't read his blog and I didn't realize he left this site.  I thought I just saw a post from sac a couple of hours ago.  Maybe that was in some other context or perhaps he changed his mind in the last two hours.

Anyway, I think KVS's strategy was to employ the old rope-a-dope and lull Hope into complacency.  Then he unleashed Jordan and company and Mitchell had no answer.
