Saw this in the 2015 NCAA Tournament thread thought it was worth a mention here:

Just finished up putting together PER metrics and published the top 100 players in the nation this year. I'll narrow this to include just the NCAA eligible players later this week.

It does seem that the figures skew slightly higher than I would have expected but that could be attributed to the larger variance between players in D3 vs the NBA.

I love seeing Tyler Gaffaney at #3 - he should be a 1st Team All American this year!

54. Brock Benson
65. Jared Holmquist

While I've got you, what are your thoughts on Calvin's chances this weekend?

I think they are both winnable games.  Calvin's experience in the tournament the last 2 years should help them.  KVS has a good track record of having Calvin prepared for tournament games.

7-1 in games to open the NCAA tournament, 17-7 overall, 16-7 if  you want to not give credit for winning the 2005 third place game.

2000
Calvin 92, Franklin, Ind. 90 (ot) (Second Round)
Calvin 82, Wooster, Ohio 53 (Sectional)
Calvin 115, McMurry, Tex. 79 (Sectional)
Calvin 79, Franklin & Marshall, Pa. 77 (Semifinals)
Calvin 79, Wis.-Eau Claire 74 (Championship game)

2001
Calvin 89, Defiance, Ohio 78 (First Round)
Ohio Northern 79, Calvin 68 (Second Round)

2004
John Carroll, Ohio 88, Calvin 77 (Second Round)

2005
Calvin 75, Wheaton, Ill. 74 (First Round)
Calvin 71, Aurora, Ill. 59 (Second Round)
Calvin 75, Mississippi Coll. 60 (Sectional)
Calvin 60, Albion 52 (Sectional)
Rochester, N.Y. 65, Calvin 62 (Semifinals)
Calvin 98, York, Pa. 84 (3rd Place)

2006
Calvin 79, Wis.-LaCrosse 71 (First Round)
Hope 70, Calvin 67 (Second Round)

2007

Illinois Wesleyan 78, Calvin 64 (Sectional)

There's not a lot of history with regards to SUNYAC schools coming down into the Ohio pods of this tournament.

Geneseo St played at Wooster last year and lost to Dickinson by 7.  Dickinson went on to the Quarterfinal before losing at Illinois Wesleyan.
Brockport St. played at John Carroll in 2009 and lost to Carnegie Mellon in OT in the first round.

I thought Brockport had also played Wooster at some point but that might have been much further back in time.  In general the SUNYAC schools haven't advanced past the 2nd round too often.

Oswego has been to the tournament 3 or 4 times recently

Here is the T.J. Huizenga rebound and 3 point play to cut the lead to 1. It shows just what anticipation, hustle, and desire can do.  Props to almcguire III for his technical expertise. (the video distortion is something we couldn't fix)

Thanks for the video.  I can't make out the numbers well.  Is that Carlson that TJ beat to the hoop?  Anyway, this was IMHO the big game changer.

Yes, it was Carlson.  This occurred immediately after Benson had scored to put Hope up 4.  After he made the free throw, I realized Calvin had a chance.

I'm going to ask this question over on the women's side as well.

If the Calvin women win the first two rounds, is it likely the NCAA puts them on the road for one of the Regionals to reduce the chances of Calvin hosting all rounds?  And does that mean if the Calvin men get through the first two rounds, they have a good shot at hosting one of the men's Regionals?

According to the Hoopsville interview with Dave Martin, women's national committee chair, the possibility of Calvin hosting throughout has come up but no decisions have been made ahead of time. He seemed very comfortable with the idea that Calvin could go the entire tournament without hitting the road.

Now, the monkey wrench in that, beyond the Calvin women simply losing, is if the Calvin men survive the weekend and turn out to be a central location that all four teams in the sectional could bus to. Being a year ending in an odd number, the men get hosting priority so if the situation is such that the men's committee chooses the Calvin men to host, the Calvin women will be hitting the road no matter what the women's committee thinks of the idea of them staying home.

There is precedent.  In 2010, the IWU women could have hosted all six games.  Alas, UWSP put a halt to that at the Shirk before the FF - we gave a party, but forgot to show up to host! :(

Rumor is Gardner broke his hand. If true, did it happen before or after the last horn sounded?

Not a rumor at all.  He broke it when he pounded his fist into the floor after losing control of the ball with .5 seconds left in the game.  Should heal fine and he will be ready to go next season.

You can see him pound the floor here: http://www.mlive.com/smallcolleges/grandrapids/index.ssf/2015/03/hope_basketball_player_trapped.html

He also pounded the floor when he lost control of the ball with .5 seconds to go.

Gardner landed awkwardly and may have injured himself on that last play. That might explain why he didn't immediately get up.

I've always felt that Huizenga was an underutilized talent, especially coming out of a solid high school program like he did. He is a player that KVS should have spent more time developing over his four years in my opinion. Its good to see him getting some time in the spotlight because he's earned it.
