The Albion roster seems to continue this year's trend toward more size around the league.  I notice one player is 6' 11" and 325 pounds. and another 6' 8".   The question is--are they players or just big bodies?

Albion with some size and their guards is intriguing.    Lowe is huge at 6-11, 325 maybe a player that might compare to Hope's Don Overbeek from yesteryear and Overbeek was probably 2 or 3 inches shorter and 50 lbs lighter.  Otherwise I can't of anyone that has been in this league and that big.

He played TE in football which must have been terrifying for some of those HS LB's.  I think you can pick him out in this photo. #22 is DaWan Smith who is 6-2 and is getting D1 and D2 football interest and not a small kid.

Lowe wasn't all-state if that means anything.  This link isn't terribly helpful but it also provides a little insight into TraVon Johnson and Khylen Watkins from Harper Creek and playing at Adrian this year.  http://www.battlecreekenquirer.com/story/sports/high-school/2015/04/01/meet-enquirer-city-boys-hoop-team/70788940/

Should be a great early test for the Dutchmen.  SVSU was picked to finish 1st in their half of the GLIAC, and has been practicing longer than Hope.

Wow . . . Hope played the state's preseason top-ranked DII team and won both halves, by a combined 100 to 87 (including one SVSU basket that didn't get counted in the first half). Hope improved during last season, and looks to be starting ahead of where they left off.

Now, if this group can just stay healthy . . .

I shall cocketh one eye in that general direction.

Couple words before I forget them

1)  SVSU didn't play their big 6-9 Center who certainly would have made a difference.  I'm not certain but it felt like maybe SVSU went with its starting 5 a few less minutes than Hope did.

2)  I'd call it a simulated game.  Two 20 minute halves, few timeouts and they didn't keep track of fouls, which was important in Hope's case.
Scores were Hope 47  SVSU 37,  Hope 53 SVSU 50......mostly even halves I think Hope's 3 point shooting built a bigger than maybe deserved first half lead and the 2nd half was coming from behind.

I wasn't as interested in the score as much as I was interested in how good Hope looked with so few practices against a team that's been practicing for a month.  Hope looks to have hit the ground running so to speak, I feel pretty good they have great potential to have a really good year.  Same group, same lineup shortcomings, a few guys noticeably stronger than last year.

Hope played without Eidson, Wittenbach and Dreyer for various minor reasons.

Nice to be in a gym again.

I believe Calvin held a JV-Varsity scrimmage yesterday, was anyone able to attend?

I think Matt Powell played for Laingsburg Christian.  I do not believe they are part of the MHSAA and play in the "home school" tournament.

Aha. Didn't know there was a Laingsburg Christian, probably because they aren't in the MHSAA. Learned my one new fact for the day which means now I can go golfing.

OK, the kids nowadays call that a TIL, which stands for "Today I Learned ...". Since I'm guessing that you didn't know that, this will make two new things you've learned today -- which means that you can avoid the computer altogether tomorrow and hit the links right after breakfast. ;)
I love breakfast links.

2015-16 MIAA MEN'S BASKETBALL PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

1. Hope 48 (6)
2. Trine 41 (1)
3. Calvin 38 (1)
4. Alma 33
5. Albion 24
6. Adrian 20
7. Kalamazoo 11
8. Olivet 9

The only surprise to me is that someone voted Calvin or Trine over Hope. It wasn't Kevin Vande Streek.

Agreed.  Personally I'm surprised Alma isn't higher - I kind of expected a pretty tight bunch between Alma, Calvin, and Trine.

Maybe someone with better superpowers than me will see this but its only 4 or 5 days until the start of the basketball season and MIAA.org has not updated its link to the composite schedule for 2015-16.
