Most likely a roster issue.  Olivet has flirted with this issue a couple times this year.  Saturday they dressed only 8 guys, looks like tonight they dressed Emory and added a JV guy.  The problem probably lies in there somewhere.

I don't know about the frequency of such things, but its definitely rare and a first for Hope that I can recall.

I assumed it was a roster issue as well.  It wasn't explained at the game.

I recall, back when Sid Bruinsma was playing for Grand Valley, that the Lakers were assessed five technical fouls prior to a game for submitting the wrong roster.  Of course, my recall could be faulty on that, but the event sticks out in my memory.

I believe I heard the technical was related to Olivet not having their starters checked into the book at the required time pregame, but that was only "thirdhand" so I can't confirm.
I can confirm that is indeed what happened

Olivet's 29 turnovers last night is the most by a Hope opponent since College of Faith (37) in the 2013 season.

College of Faith 37--2013
Wheaton           33--2008
Marygrove         31--2008
Olivet                 29--2016
Trine                  28--2016
Marygrove         28--2011
Lake Forest       28--2011

Olivet has now played 24  players on their varsity for the 2nd year in a row and played 23 in 2014.  I believe Olivet has now suited up 54 different players on varsity over the past 3 seasons.

In the same time frame, Hope has used 22 players.

The MIAA tournament weekend has been restored with a twist.........

If the men and women have different #1 seeds, the semifinals will be at 5:30 (#2 vs. #3) and 7:30 (#1 vs. #4), and 7:30 championship game.

If the same school is the #1 seed for both men and women, the women's semifinals will be #2 vs. #3 at 1 p.m., and #1 vs. #4 at 5:30, and the men's semifinals will be #2 vs. #3 at 3 p.m., and #1 vs. #4 at 7:30. Championship games will be at 5:30 for women and 7:30 for men.

One downer seems to be under scenario #1 the men and women would be playing at the same time at different locations, the other sort of downer is the Friday schedule should one school host.

Will this be used for this season?

Its my understanding, yes.

Some random thoughts following Calvin's loss last night vs. Albion:

--Cam Denney hit a 3 at the 10:16 mark of the first half to tie the game at 18. Over the next 17+ minutes, Jordan Daley scored 16 of Calvin's 17 points (Carlos Amoros made one free throw) before Michael Wilks broke the drought with a basket with 13:01 left in the game. In other words, over a time period of 17+ minutes no Calvin player made a basket other than Jordan. Wondering where Calvin's offense is coming from next year? Me too.

--Building on my rhetorical question, I found Siegel's presence on the bench for the full 40 interesting. Mike has had some ups and downs this year and hasn't played particularly well the last couple of games, but he is a 6'5" player who definitely has shown scoring pop, must be defended when he's on the arc, and holds a promising upside I think.

--I wish they tracked statistics on this sort of thing but Nate Drews may be closing in on the record book with this one. He's played 308 minutes this season and has yet to shoot a free throw as a varsity player.

Yes the game will be sold out. A ticket is required and no passes, or ID's will be honored at the door. It is the first time it has happened that I am aware of other than a Hope v. Calvin game since the DeVos opened in 2005. The only tickets left are for Hope students and that process is happening right now. Exciting times for all involved. ;D

Is anyone familiar with MIAA tournament seeding tie breakers? Who would be in line for the #1 seed if Hope can find a way to win tomorrow?

I'm hoping a first place tie-breaker is a non-issue!

Both teams have games remaining that would factor into any tie-breaking scenarios.  Long way to go, even after Saturday.

Obviously if Alma wins, they would have effectively a 3 game lead on Hope for hosting the semi-finals because they would own the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Very good point, even after Saturday the Scots still travel to Albion and have home games against Trine and Calvin. This is basketball and anything can happen!

Why would the MIAA do this? Why not let the #2 seeds host a game? The potential for having to play 1 PM semifinal games  is the worst possible scenario, IMO. Why not sell out 4 games at Hope, Calvin, and Alma and avoid the risk of having to play 4 games at Hope, all on the same day?

I realize there is a lot of season left and there are many many things that would make this moot. I'm simply wondering what the tie breakers are if head to head is a tie... Same could be asked about the 4th place teams...

Tiebreakers for seeding have historically been:

1. Head-to-head
2. Results vs. the #1 seed.
3. Results vs. the #2 seed.
... etc.
10. Coin Flip

Tiebreaker for the 4th seed (i.e. getting into the tournament) is said to be:

1. Head-to-head
2. Play-in game

We've never had a play-in game in MBB since they moved to the 4-team format, but the league had said they don't want secondary tiebreakers to decide who does and doesn't make the field. Record and head-to-head only.

Head-to-head is replaced with results versus tied teams if it's a 3 or 4-way situation.

So, in the Hope/Alma situation, if they both finish 13-1 and split with each other, I think home court will come down to a coin flip.
