If you think about how the MIAA's round-robin is set up, getting past "f" on the tie-breaker chart would be really rare though.  You would have to have two teams lose a game (or multiple games) to the same opponent at the same locations, with one of those teams having that happen in the 2nd half of the round-robin and that team can only be the team that beat the other the 2nd half of the round-robin.

Congratulations to Scott Nikodemski, this year's leading MIAA MVP candidate, who was just named D3 Men's Basketball best point guard in the nation.   http://herosports.com/news/d3-mens-hoops-ten-on-fire-guards-

Forcing me to watch that twice in one week. You really know how to hurt a guy.

Leading into tonight's huge matchup, here's an interesting, well-written article in the Morning Sun on the Beckman family and their complicated relationship with Hope College. Worth the read, whether you root for one team, the other, or have no dog in the fight.

That's quite a story!

A large percentage of the Alma fan section today will be Beckman's.   About 3 years ago it was pretty much all Beckman's.

"It is going to be the most stressful game my wife and I go to," Dave said about the impending matchup. "It's stressful because we have so many connections at Hope and we're the outsiders now. There are people who didn't like our decision to go to Alma and it's very difficult. I told my wife jokingly, 'I wish I didn't even have a ticket to the game.' It makes it very difficult for us to go in there and root against them with all the people we know."

I would assume/expect Hope fans would respect their decision and not make it difficult.

Anyone know if Hope archives their video? The wife scheduled a date night, so I'll miss live...

Fueled by a dominating performance on the boards (51-24) Calvin pulled away the second half to a comfortable 80-55 win over Olivet. The Comets surprised me, as they are more individually talented and athletic than I had expected to see, but were often hurt on the boards by gaps in their zone and some great hustle by Knights players chasing down numerous loose ball rebounds to extend possessions. Calvin—who rebounded by committee today—had almost as many offensive rebounds (21) as Olivet's total number, and that helped offset indifferent shooting (43%) and more turnovers than makes a coach comfortable. Other game notes:

--I came away pretty impressed by the Comets' front line (Chrzan, Gardner, and Haas) but their starting backcourt struggled, going 0-7 from the arc with 8 turnovers. Didn't get much help off the bench either.

--Interested to see that Calvin's starting backcourt and their two subs, both of whom are freshmen, combined for the same number of minutes today (40). The frosh more than held their own. They still need to learn shot selection but there is something very dynamic about the nature of the youngsters' play that really impresses. I do not expect to see their minutes decline and that would be welcome.

--After not playing against Albion for reasons unknown to me, Siegel returned to game action and—along with the freshmen—Mike had much to do with breaking down Olivet's zone. Calvin has struggled a lot recent years with teams who use zone defenses. Alma's zone in particular has bedeviled the Knights the last couple of years and the Scots will continue to employ it until the Knights start to hurt it. I thought Siegel's play in the middle of the Olivet zone was effective. He only scored 7 points but had four assists and the inside-out ball movement that has to happen to beat a zone worked well along with the freshmen backcourt. Calvin often played a small lineup in the second half but wound up with many good scoring opportunities against the zone, and eventually forced Olivet to go man. If Calvin is to have any chance at beating Alma next week, they must be similarly effective with ball movement, while keeping turnovers to a minimum. Calvin's slim chances at a fourth place finish got a breath of air today with Adrian's win over Trine.

--Congrats to Jordan Daley who joined the 1000 point club at Calvin and finished the afternoon with 16 points.

28 all at the half in Holland. Both teams playing like they know the stakes are very high this game.

Nice win by Hope, 71-57. Especially in the second half the Flying Dutchmen looked like a team more used to playing in a big game than did Alma. Hope's ability to get the ball inside on Alma's zone the final 20 minutes really put pressure on the Scots and gave the home team better quality shots than the visitors. On a computer screen it looked like Alma was chasing the ball the entire second half. Thought Hope's defense on DJ Beckman was outstanding, not allowing him to breathe and limiting him to 7 floor shots. Jason Beckman has had a hot hand all year but not tonight, as he went 0-4 from the arc and 3-10 overall. Eidson's second half shooting (15 for the game) really opened things up for Hope though his last second dunk wasn't very classy. Bet he wishes he had a do over on that. Mitchell certainly does, of that I can assure you.

Some of the best man-to-man defense I've seen all year at any level this year. Hats off to Hope for a gritty performance. From everything of Hope I've seen the past few years I've always been impressed with Eidson. The classlessness at the end, not so much. But he can play.

The story of the game IMO was on the boards. Alma's defense played pretty well, and held Hope to a fairly poor shooting percentage (under 39) but I'd guess somewhere between 5-8 of the 24 made field goals were off of some of the 16 offensive rebounds.
