Yesterday, the Calvin softball team swept a doubleheader from Hope. Just wondering if those two wins can be said to add to Kevin VandeStreek's career record against Calvin's archrival. :-\ ;)

Sure, why not - he has still got a ways to go to get to a .500 record against Hope  :)  ;D  :P

Excellent point, which weighs heavily in the following observation: "Let us count the ways to go."

23-34 in case anyone was wondering.  After the same number of games, GVW's record was 27-30

Maybe Kevin VandeStreek should stick to softball - his shelf life was extended 5 years by Jordan Brink and his players last year and potential recruits are bailing. Real nice guy, but his coaching style is from the 1980's and the program is flat, at best. It's the most fun when both Hope & Calvin are very strong - certainly not the case last year and does not look too promising this coming year for Calvin. HK

I am very sorry to hear of Coach Dougal's resignation.  The record of this year's team may make everything I am about to write seem crazy, but I really think he was making strides in moving the program in the right direction.  He was a tireless recruiter who had done a good job of bringing in some talented players during this time at K.  Stinger, the low number of recruits had more to do with the lack of a JV program - a financial decision - than on a lack of recruiting.  I watched most of the 'K' games this year (none in person, unfortunately) and you could tell that something was not quite right.  Kalamazoo should (could) have beaten Alma twice and the end of those games showed what made Alma so good and why K struggled.  Alma had unselfish players who bought into a system and made plays when it mattered.  They played together and at the end of those games were composed and did what they needed to do to win.  The Hornets seemed to each try to make the individual play and have no direction.  Is that because Coach Dougal had no plan of what he wanted the players to do or that the team had not bought into that plan?  I am fairly certain that Dougal had a plan.  To bring things back to Alma again, I enjoyed their success this season and found the stories on Coach Hargrave's building of the program very interesting.  They were at an important crossroads a few years ago when they were just starting to win and this year's senior class chose to stick together and keep believing in the goal.  They added some important pieces and look what happened.  I think you see the other direction that can go in the Kalamazoo situation.  I would compare K's junior class to the senior class at Alma (not player for player, but just the fact it was Dougal's first class and the one to start a new direction for the program).  Those guys came to the same crossroads this year and took a different path.  Ultimately I guess that all comes back on the coach, but I also think it is the players' responsibility to fight through some adversity.

But what was Douma's record vs Hope?

sac

17-14 if I have the years right as 1984 to 1996, that included a long stretch where his teams won 14 of 16 with some really historically excellent teams.
He lost his first 5 and his last 5 against Hope when Hope had historically excellent teams.

Hope Men's and Women's Basketball team members  and coaches volunteered Saturday at the West Michigan Miracle League games.  Thanks to all of you for getting up early and putting up with the cold, windy, morning.  Your spirit and energy is greatly appreciated.  I may be a UD Spartans alum, but I still can say "Go Dutch". :D
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀
